Madison is a spayed female. She is long-haired torti

Date of diabetes dx: 11-2007

Maddie's chart on Google Docs:

The following is taken from Maddie's chart at the vet's office:

At Madison's annual exam on 11/9/07, her doctor drew blood to have a Wellness Profile done because Madison had lost 2 pounds since her last annual exam in 9/06 (from 14# 4 oz to 12# 4 oz). BG = 350.

On 11/12/07, her doctor drew more blood to confirm diagnosis of diabetes. BG = 361. Began 1u Lantus b.i.d. on 11/12/07.

11/21/07 - Maddie's first glucose curve at the vet's office. (*Maddie is terrified of the vet's office*) She ate a small breakfast and got 1u Lantus before going to the vet's office.

  • Shots per day: 2

Oral diabetes medications: None

We hometest BG: Just started 3-16-08 using the Walgreens True Track meter. Maddie really doesn't like her ears touched, so it's a challenge. She likes to sit on the back of my chair near my reading lamp. I discovered that if I turn on the light and turn it towards her head, it warms her ears nicely. She seems to like the warmth, too. She didn't like either the rice sock or the washrag in a plastic bag. (Yes, she's a princess.)

*Update* - I didn't believe it possible, but hometesting is a snap. Maddie still doesn't like it and tries to pull her ear away at the moment of impact, but I almost always get a reading on the first attempt now. *antijinx*

Food

Brand Name: Currently, Evo wet and Fancy Feast from "The List." I save some water from the chicken I boil for her as a treat and use the chicken broth to moisten her food.

She used to eat Iams dry, then Purina Naturals dry. She tried several "all natural" gourmet dry foods and didn't really care for any of them, except for Evo dry which she loved.

As of 3/18/08, Madison is off the dry food. I've reduced her to 1u Lantus b.i.d. She seems to be doing really well. She's drinking and peeing less and hasn't peed on the floor since probably 3/15/08. Increased to "fat" 1u on 3/25/08. Increased to 1.25u b.i.d. on 4/6/08. She chart or daily numbers for other increases.

5/30/08 - We're trying out some Wellness, Nature's Variety raw and Merrick.

b>Formula:

Consistancy: Wet or Canned

Amount fed per meal: 1/3 to 1/2 can Evo or one can FF in AM and PM, plus another can of FF left out for over night Number of meals/day: 2-3

How is food given in relation to the insulin shots? I give her her shot while she is eating

We use Janet and Binky(GA)'s foodcharts: Yes

Other information about Madison's diet: Madison has frequent hairballs.

Civilians and Other FurKids

Charlie (gray, short-hair male - neutered, front declawed), Smoochie (black & white "tuxedo," short hair female - spayed) & Lala (dilute torti short hair, female - spayed).

All of our babies are rescues, to some extent. My best friend had Madison (then named Badger, of all things) as a "barn cat." Someone at her church was getting rid of Madison because they had a family member coming to live with them. When I met Maddie, I'd recently had to have my boy cat, Willy, PTS. I was heartbroken. Maddie and I fell in love immediately, and I took her home with me. She was dirty, scrawny and had a big cut on her side, probably from a raccoon. My mom said she was the ugliest cat that she'd ever seen. Madison has bloomed into the most beautiful girl you could ever imagine.

My DH found Smoochie when he was having some work done on his father's house. The workers apparently scared off the momma cat. Poor baby Smoochie was probably about 4 weeks old. I fed her with a baby bottle at first. We were trying to hold off on a name for her until she got a little older, and she could let her personality show, and I started calling her Smoochie because she was the smoochiest little angel. It stuck. Although, she's Moochie much of the time.

When we adopted Charlie (sight unseen), we didn't know that he had been front declawed. His previous family didn't "have room for him anymore" so they were getting rid of him. I'm so fortunate to have him as my furbaby. He's my only lap cat and a complete lover.

Then there's Lala. Someone dumped Lala off at a local pet store. One of the shelters that operates an adoption center out of the pet store had her in one of their cages. I thought she was beautiful and had to have her. The woman warned me that she was mean. "Don't be silly," I said. "She just needs some love and attention." Well, I was wrong. She's a terror. I love her, but she's a handful. I may only touch Lala if she invites the attention, and, even then, I'm likely to get bit or scratched. My DH calls her "Crazy." (He loves her too. In fact, she likes him better than me.) We think she might have been a feral. She's a wild child.

Maddie is the "boss" of the house. The other kitties pretty much give her wide berth, except for Lala. When Lala's feeling especially brave and frisky, she'll run up and bat at Maddie's tail. Maddie just has to take a step towards her and Lala runs like her life depends on it (which it probably does). Maddie isn't openly aggressive towards the other cats, but she is very passive-aggressive (lying at the top of the stairs to prevent the other cats from going by, etc.). Smoochie is only ~ 6#, and she is a princess and a lover - except when it comes to Lala. She wants to kill Lala - literally - even though Lala weighs probably close to 14#. Lala (who is aggressive towards everyone and everything - she might have been a feral before someone dumped her at the pet store- is terrified of Smoochie. I have to keep them separated at *all* times. We have to treat "shift changes" (which one is confined to their respective bedrooms) like prison transfers - one must be completely secured before the other can be let loose. Charlie is a lover boy and gets along pretty well with everyone. Well, he gets in a mood now and then and wants to assert his male dominance, but the girls (who all have their claws) put an end to that real quick. A few times he's expressed his displeasure with the girls picking on him by peeing on the wall, but it's not the end of the world. :-)

Bugs (GA) 1988? - 12/18/07 - We miss her very much. Her best friend, Tiki Boots preceded her by almost 2 years.
