ROLL CALL: How many cats here got off insulin when taken off dry food?
Posted by: Heather & Seasaidh (IP Logged)
Date: March 30, 2006 06:31AM

Seasaidh is one of them! Former dry food addict. When I switched his diet to totally low carb/high protein canned only food he was off insulin in two weeks.

I think some new people here need to see this roll call thread.

I put Max on EVO the day he was DX in July 2005. He was a lifelong dry food eater. Slowly transitioned him to wet, and took all dry away on November 6, 2005. Last shot was 12/31/05.

Probably did not really need to shoot him the last couple weeks in December.

Made a believer out of me. But I also have seen other people completely remove the dry, and it hasn't worked for them. I count us among the fortunate.
All Newbies...remember...you are not just feeding a pancreas!

This is a great thread to point out the fact that people have a pretty good chance of getting their cats off of insulin if they stop feeding dry food and, instead, feed a low carb canned food diet.

As we all know, not all cats get off of insulin once put on an appropriate diet but their insulin needs will certainly decrease once the human stops pouring gasoline (carbs) on their wildfire (diabetes).

I do want to also point out to the newcomers on this board that we are NOT just feeding a pancreas. We are feeding a WHOLE cat and dry food is just simply not a healthy diet for an obligate carnivore.

Please remember to nourish the entire body and not get caught up only in the diabetic process.

Chico is one of them, too.
His last Lantus shot was 3/22 in the am.
This didn't occur until we stopped free feeding, took away the dry food, and began feeding only Wellness & Merrick.
The food change has improved his coat, too, which was always overly oily. Chico has dental problems and needs his teeth cleaned each year, and that was with the dry. I'm sure he will continue to need regular teeth cleaning.

Yes and no.

My first sugarcat, Rambo, was able to be diet controlled after removing the dry food from his diet.

But Conan developed diabetes two years later- after all cats were on low-carb canned food only. He was on insulin for several months and then was able to come off. I still consider him to be diet controlled, however, since his BGs shoot up if he gets into forbidden foods. So he is diet controlled now, but wasn't eating anything different when he developed FD.

Dry Evo (6 or 7% carbs) did it for Trouble. He's eating wet food now, but low carb is low carb, whether wet or dry. Wet food is better, but I think it is important for people to know that they can transition to low carb faster for difficult dry food addicts - just my two cents. Laura

Maja's never really eaten much dry food - she has a huge overbite and not many teeth, so she's always just eaten a few pieces. However, when the two other cats still used to have some dry food out for sake of peace and quiet in the the early morning and Maja ate a couple of pieces, her BG shot up to the late 300's/ early 400's.

Nowadays all three of them get canned low-carb only, noone eats any dry food, and despite that the two boys used to eat like 2/3 canned and 1/3 dry in the past, everyone is looking much better with canned low-carb only, shinier coats, noone's constipated and the two males have lost app 2 pounds each despite eating how much they want.

Cammie was on S/D dry (and Humulin L) at the shelter prior to coming home to us. She decided to switch to the canned food that I was feeding Tux on her own within two days of coming home. Cam's been off the insulin since August - I can only credit that to the change (and reduction in amount) of food.

Tux went on a two year hiatus from the insulin when I first changed her over to low-carb canned and is now on 2 units of Humulin U BID as opposed to the 5.5 units of Humulin U BID when she was eating dry.

Sundance was on insulin for only 10 days. On the 11th day, I hometested and found that she didn't need it - then or since.

She was diagnosed on Dec 20/05. They fed her dry at the vets but I switched her to wet on Xmas day. So, essentially 6 days after switching, she was insulin free.

Thanks to all of you here. Especially some of the oldies who have kept this wonderful site going for long enough for me to find. And to all the newer people who, although going through their own stuff, still managed to make time and compassion for me.

My personal experience with FD cats in the UK has been that there was a much higher proportion becoming diet-controlled on low-carb food than seemed to be the case in the US. My theory is that this could be because substantially overweight cats seem to be much rarer in the UK than in the US - from this and other cat message boards I belong to it seems not at all unusual for cats in the US to be 18 pounds or more (very rare in the UK), and pictures I have seen posted of pets on other message boards are very, very frequently of cats that would be regarded as unusually chubby over here.

Romeo hasn't needed to have insulin in over 36 hours. He has remained mainly from 90-120 with one test of 70.

In the last 6 days he has only needed 0.5U three times.

Romeo ate Science Diet Light dry prior to his DX. For 2 weeks after his DX, he had a mix of the dry food and Fancy Feast wet food. For the last week he has been on only Fancy Feast wet food. What a difference!

Merlyn did not go directly off insulin after taking away the dry but his insulin needs dropped from 1.75 units Lantus BID to half a unit BID in a month after no dry. 4 months later he went on his trip to the Falls!

I dont think that would have happened if he was on dry.

When I posted I just knew I was going to get a lot of different responses. But that's good!! Those of us who are lucky with our sugarcats on honeymoon need to remember that it might not last even if they're eating a good diet.

Just to add my two cents more... I tried almost everything with him to get him off insulin. He ate dry m/d for a while (which I know some cats have gotten off insulin with that) but it would only spike his bg even higher. I had to get him off dry food altogether somehow. It was tough, but we did it.

Shess' pancreas went overboard when I fed him Science Diet Sensitive Skin as my vet suggested for his skin allergies. I pray that he never needs to go back on insulin, and also for all of you who have achieved this too. And for people who are trying to get their cats regulated and off insulin, I wish you all the best of luck too.

So this can really happen to some cats? My vet swore she would be on insulin forever at a pretty high dose. ('Course she also insisted we fee DRY DM.) I am really excited now!!!!!
Bless everyone who has been telling us newbies to switch foods and hometest!!!!!!! I will keep testing and see if the transistion stops her need for the shots. She has not had one in 24 hours because of good numbers. YAY!!!!! Thanks!!!

Lately I have been trying to type more about glucose toxicity. Elevated blood glucose is very hard on the body - most notably - the pancreas and kidneys. I think it is really important to get these newly diagnosed cats on insulin right away while implementing a diet change. Some of these cats may only need insulin for a few days or a week or two. One of my foster cats was returned to me as a diabetic. BGs over 500 and fructosamine over 600. Peeing and drinking huge amounts!! Within 3 days of a diet change to all canned Wellness - PLUS a bit of insulin - her bgs were 50-70 and she has remained insulin-free for the past 2 years. (She was only given 4 doses of insulin.)

The problem is that this method can be a bit complicated - and dangerous - for newbies who are not testing. A cat can become hypo very quickly if one is not careful to lower the insulin as the carbs are lowered.

but there is now huge promotion of dry food by Iams etc, not to mention vets selling Hill's and so forth, so that may change. After all, if you don't know what we do, a food that can be left out all day without deteriorating and which is often cheaper than wet is attractive - and the companies promote it as having lots of positive health benefits. If dry food does become much more popular here then we too may see a large increase in feline obesity.

Also- she is symptom free of IBS- something she has struggled with her whole life. I think she's healthier at 13+ years than she has ever been her whole life! Also, she's lost weight, is lean and trim with great muscle tone. My vet always comments on just how great she looks! smiling smiley

And I have to give thanks to Dr Lisa- the wealth of information on her website, and she herself (on another board) for giving me the push to change her diet.

I know this is late to the thread (by alot!) but i do know Dr. Lisa links to it so I wanted to add my support. I tried for over a year to regulate Sparky on dry W/D kibble with no good results. Up to 7u BID of PZI he was still having numbers in the 300s and 400s and very irratic curves.

I finally gave in and switched him to a low carb canned food diet (mostly friskies) and i saw results within a week. I had to keep reducing my dose (quickly at first, then a little slower) and eventually he needed no insulin at all! We are now happily on remission and I know this would have never happened if I had continued to feed the dry food.

I would like to add my experience. Our cat had a glucose level of over 400 and was showing major signs of diabetes. We took her off dry food, feeding her soley high protein, low carb wet food, and within 5 months her glucose level is 90: completely normal! We never had to give her insulin!

Even prescription dry Purina DM - drove Betty's blood glucose sky high. Home testing became even more crucial when changing diet and eliminating dry - her insulin needs decreased as her BG #'s did. It was nothing short of amazing. Who knew?
Betty eats 4 little meals a day of mostly wheat-glucose-free Fancy Feast, along with home cooked plain fish, beef and chicken.

Hi folks. I'm happy to note that after 10 months on insulin (much of it at three units twice a day) Chairman Meow is off insulin.

As soon as he was diagnosed, we switched him to Innova EVO, *dry* without grain, which we found on Janet and Binky's list. He's been off for over a month and holding steady.

This site and our vet were godsends.

I am happy to hear that he is off of insulin......now you really need to start thinking about proper nutrition for his *entire* body - not just his pancreas. I notice that many diabetic cat caregivers get tunnel vision with respect to the carb level of the foods they feed and they forget about the rest of the body.

Dry food is not a good diet to be feeding any cat. You are making it very difficult for his kidneys and bladder to stay healthy, not to mention the rest of his body. Chronic, low-level dehydration is not a 'friend' to the body. Please consider getting him on an appropriately hydrated food....ie...canned food.

Hi. I'm new to this. But I've been reading everyones experiences with their cats coming off insulin. My 11 year old cat, Sully, was diagnosed last year and needs two shots a day. I really would love to get him off insulin so that I can live my life. Basically, to be able to go away for a weekend and not have to find someone to give him a needle. Just feed him (and the other cat,Sophie). I am really encouraged by everyones results and would like to know exactly what to do to get that. How do I know when he can come off the insulin? Do I need to take him to the vet first or what is the exact procedure? Also, what is a good canned food to give? How much etc? I understand in order to change you need to do it gradually with the dry. So any suggestions and help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I love my cat and want to help him the best way possible. He also needs to lose weight and get that wonderful shine in his coat again. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from anyone.
