Callie is an 11-12 year old short haired calico with vibrant orange black and white markings. She was actually my sisters cat until 2 1/2 years ago when my sister started having kids and Callie mad it known that she did not appreciate that. Due to an entire winter spent outside several years ago the tips of both ears were removed due to frostbite.
In October of last year I took her to the vet because she was vomitting everywhere repeatedly, excessive drinking and peeing. The vet diagnosed her with allergies gave her a shot and left it at that. She weighed in at 9 lbs at that time. She didn't seem to have any further symptoms, but was peeing all over any clothes that were left out (after diagnoses of allergies, I just thought this was her natural brattiness and didn't pay much mind) Now that we are living back in a house with my sister(the previous owner) Callie is confined to my bedroom and the upstairs patio due to problems peeing on the childrens' clothes (can't say they weren't warned) Several weeks ago I noticed that she seemed to be losing weight. Then suddenly she got very sick. She wasn't eating or drinking, lay with her head in the water bowl, diarhea everywhere and could barely walk. I weighed her at 6 lbs.
I had my sister take her to the vet the next day while I was at work they immediately checked for FIV/FeLV and she was positive for FIV. The vet advised that she probably had kidney disease and a kidney infection and due to the FIV was not likely to pull thru. They advised me of 25% chance of survival if another blood test confirmed it was just on infection. After the blood test they found bg levels over 600 and diagnosed diabetes on 8/11/03. They increased her chance of survival to 50%. In my mind those were great odds! After 5 days in the vet she was released. She is now resting comfortably at home same as ever. The vet put her on 1 unit of Humulin N once a day. Due to her weight loss and lack of appetite she did not recommend changing her diet yet, however Callie get spoiled by the wet food they fed at the vet and now doesn't eat anything else.
On 8/21 she went in for her nadir bg check and is now on 1 unit of N twice a day. And we are hometesting. She'll have her first curve done tomorrow.
Both Amanda and Callie live in Columbus, OH.
