Andrea, Chloe and her 3 year old sister Josie, live in Center City Philadelphia. Chloe was diagnosed with diabetes in August 2003, two months shy of her 11th birthday. Her bg was 486 and she had lost 1.5 lbs in just a few weeks.
On 8/26/03 Chloe was given an Rx for Insulin NPH, 3 units every 12 hours. Also insulin syringes B-D ultrafine 3/10cc (1 box).
After having a conversation with the vet, I started administering 2 units of the "N" on 9/3/03. In the week after the diagnosis (and after I changed her food) and before administering the first shot, she had gained back about .6 lbs and her bg was 390.
I changed Chloe's food (going from Hill's Science Diet Senior dry food) to canned foods low in carbs and high in protein as suggested on Janet's nutritional breakdown chart. I mostly am feeding them Friskies Tender Cuts.
When I called the vet in late August to say she was still urinating heavily and drinking a good amount, he increased her to 3 units. I now know that I shouldn't have listened to that.
I took her in for her first glucose curve testing on 10/7/03. The vet told me to feed her and give her her insulin before bringing her in (so they didn't do a pre-shot and they didn't feed her all day). That night, the vet told me that she hit a 27! He had no idea what to do, so he called his colleagues at one of the top vet hospitals and they said don't do anything! You can't feed her or it will ruin the test. She didn't have any symptoms at all. So, we decreased her back to 2 units.
We have another appt with the vet 10/28 for a second glucose curve, this time with a pre-shot test. I'm curious to see what happens.
After the expense of the glucose testing and the very low number scare, I am ready to hometest.
