Smokey left us on 10-14-2003
She was such a sweet girl, I miss her dearly.
It seems that some tumors (possibly cancer) had caught up with my dear girl very quickly and her body was filling up with fluid.
I just couldn't stand to see her so sad and tired, she had also lost intrest in food...food was something Smokey NEVER refused, so, it was apparent that she was not feeling well at all.
I would give anything to have her physically here with me.
The house seems very empty without her.
I am grateful that I found this place and all the wonderful people who 'hang-out' here, you have all been life savers...first for Smokey and now for me!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Peace, love and happiness to all! :-)
Diagnosed 1-6-2003
Smokey weighed 17 lbs. down to 13.5 lbs now and holding steady.
She is almost 11 years old.
Her weight loss and strange hind leg stance made us take her to the vet. (That's from diabetic neuropathy.)
She was diagnosed with diabetes on through a blood test.
Her BG level was 470.
Her vet was not very positive about the dx and he scared the heck out of me.
She was started immediately on a diet of w/d dry food.
1-18-03
Smokey's new food is not agreeing with her, she has very loose stools. I've decided to beg my vet to order some Purina DM.
1-20-03
Started using Wellness canned food for Smokey. I'm trying to convert her from a 'dry-food-grazing' cat to a 'eat on a schedule' cat.
1-22-03
The dry DM finally arrived...still working towards only canned food.
1-26-03
Stool returning to normal! :-)
1-30-03
Started home testing (Elite XL)my "+" time is from food (Smokey isn't on insulin). Smokey is very good with it, it's the bean that shakes and gets an upset tummy!:
1-31-2003 193, +3.5 and 77, +6 (I think this one is wrong but, who knows?).
2-1 219 +1.5
2-2 198 +2
2-3 186 +3
2-5 192 +6 (she did nibble some in between meals)
I really hope the meter and I are doing this correctly because those numbers look good from diet change only.
2-11-03 Smokey decided she doesn't want to eat the canned Wellness (probably introduced too fast but, I felt I needed to because of her loose stools). Now using low carb Fancy Feast with small amounts of Wellness added. Her BG is still looking ok.
March 2003 Smokey turned 11 this month! BG is still hovering in the upper 100's.
April 2003 Smokey is still doing well, her BG remains in the upper 100's. Her neuropathy is just about gone! She jumps up on the window sills regularly now!
June 2003 Smokey's BG is still staying in the upper 100's. I think her neuropathy is gone! She seems to be feeling much better and enjoying her days of just being a cat!
July 2003 Recently Smokey has taken up running, yup that's right full-speed...mad dash running around the house! I don't think she's had this much energy in atleast 5 years! :-)
August 2003 Smokey is till doing well. Her latest trick is staying 'cool'. (see pic below) LOL
THANK YOU FDMB, you saved my kitty!
Here's Smokey 8/2003:
