Don't feed and test again in 20 minutes. Put stalling in your subject line.

I hope the vet visit goes well :bighug: her numbers are not dangerous. Did the vet tell you to feed her?

The numbers of 90 & 89 are not unsafe numbers.

Is she still not eating, Debra?

You might want to talk to your vet about having something for nausea at home (if needed) like ondansetron or cerenia, as well as possibly an appetite stimulant like cyproheptadine or mirtazapine. I prefer the cypro because some cats have problems with crazy behavior with mirtazapine, but both can be very effective

If she's showing signs of nausea, you wouldn't want to give an appetite stimulant though....You need to treat the nausea first.

Your vet can also check for ketones with a blood or urine test while you're there, but you should get some ketone test strips for home soon too just in case

While you're out, grab some Gerber stage 2 meat foods or Beech Nut (most cats seem to prefer the Gerbers)....they're just good to have around

Her cat barely ate yesterday. I have a feeling she might have pancreatitis. With these numbers she should be hungry.

    Different Doctor...Different Diagnosis...Different Instructions...
I'm confused :/ when we got there, Cinnamon's Dr. had left, and she was seen by a different Dr., he spent a lot of time with her and asked ton of questions, which I liked, he also studied her records for a long time (ultrasound, blood, urine, procedures, meds)...
I wanted a ketone test, but he said not necessary, that her biggest problem is her liver...he studied her ultrasound and doesn't think lymphoma, but hepatitis...he said to Stop giving her the antibiotic Metronidazole she's been on for a month, he said her Dr. should not have had her on it for that long...he said Stop cooking her meats, it is too much protein which can cause ketones, he wants me to give her just the low carb canned foods...
She was tested with both meters at the vet, at 11:45, and she was #110 (#191 on cat meter) he said give her only 1 unit when we get home, which I did @ 1:30pm...he said continue with 2 units @ 8pm if she is running her usual numbers...
I took her to the Dr. because I panicked that she wasn't eating normal, and her temp was 103.1°, but a normal 102° when we got there, and now she is eating, maybe she was too hot? Or just not feeling well?
He said I'm doing very well with her.

I only have a quick minute before I have to run out the door, but I wanted to ask that you please don't give insulin at 8 tonight without some additional input from the members here. Lantus shots should be given 12 hours apart. There are only rare instances and circumstances where it is given less than 12 hours apart. Since I can't stay, I'm tagging some others who I'm hoping will be on the board to offer advice.

I am glad that she started eating for you that is great! About shooting tonight, I would not shoot closer than 12 hours apart with the Lantus but that will make you shooting at 1: 30 Am which is crazy. Maybe a better choice would be to skip tonight and shoot tomorrow at your normal time to regain your schedule.

I don't know about the Metro and being on too long maybe others can weigh in on that. And I have never heard that too much protein can cause ketones. And I so wish he would have done a quick blood test to see what her ketones were. :banghead:
The basic recipe for developing DKA = an insufficient supply of insulin + inappetance + infection OR other systemic stresses. So again, I am very glad she started eating for you.

I am sure others will weigh in soon.

Please don't give any insulin sooner than 12 hours. You can adjust by 15 minutes each cycle if you wish to change shooting time. As Bobbie said it would be OK to skip and give at whatever time you like in the morning.

Metronizadole can in rare instances cause neurological problems so I agree with this. What was the reason for it anyhow? When I was given it for my cat's diarrhea I was told to stop when normal.

I am agreeing to skip insulin tonight and get back on schedule tomorrow morning. If I'm guessing the Metro was for the possible Lymphoma in your subject line. They wanted to put Doodles on it for his IBD but needed to monitor toxicity levels. I declined. I'm glad she eating and you're in good hands with Elise and Bobbie. :bighug::bighug:

Her regular Dr. put her on it a month ago and said she needed it for her liver...and last week's visit I asked her if it was time to stop, she said no, she also said to refill when it's gone and keep giving it...
He told me today same thing you just said, it causes neurological problems if taken too long.

Yes it was because her regular Dr. said she may have lymphoma because of spots on her liver...but the Dr. today studied her ultrasound photos and said he believes it's hepatitis.
And I won't give any insulin tonight.
Guess I really messed her up by panicking today :'(

I think it was good that you got another pair of eyes on her or you wouldn't have found out about neurological problems with the metro. Also, she wasn't eating and that can get serious. It never fails that once you take them in they become better.:banghead:

Did the new vet say what if anything can be done for the hepatitis?

Protein doesn't cause ketones like that, but I agree you should just stick with LC canned for meals....plain protein doesn't have all the necessary supplements our kitties need. It's fine for a treat, but not for meals.

Glad to hear others convinced you to skip tonight....that's quite a bit off schedule!! I'd go ahead and test her a few times today if you can

Are you sure he said hepatitis and not hepatic lipidosis which is fatty liver disease. One way to handle and avoid fatty liver is to make sure close to the normal amount of food is eaten.

If you see her heading for the litter box, follow her and observe her behaviour. Also, do a dehydration test. Tent her skin as if you were going to give an insulin shot. The skin should fall back almost immediately.

Well there you have it. When they get constipated they get so nauseous and won't eat and then throw up......I think if you can offer her a bit more food in about a 1/2 hour or so, her numbers will come up for you. You shot 6 hours ago so I think she will be fine.

No need to apologize!! We all panic especially the first time we see those low numbers!!

First time with China, I knew I could give her some maple syrup, but didn't know how much to give her, so I dumped about a cup full into a bowl and let her at it....was surprised that she liked it!

Needless to say, it brought her numbers up...and up...and up....Learned later it was supposed to be a couple of drops of syrup...not half the bottle....LOL

There's still a constipation issue to address. For tonight, do you have any canned pumpkin in the house? Real pumpkin, not pie filling. If so, you can try adding 1/4 tsp to her food.

Debra....when they're running that close to "too low", you don't want to wait an hour between tests

It does take about 20-30 minutes for any food you feed to get into the bloodstream and raise the blood glucose so you should test at least every 30 minutes until they're safely up some.....simple sugars like Karo/honey/syrup act a little faster

My comment was aimed at the fact that Cinny was at 56 at 7pm and not re-tested until 8pm.....I would have liked to see another test at 7:30, especially since 50's are a new low for her

Yeah I'll be here a little longer....I'll keep an eye on her but I think we're probably past the crisis stage at this point, especially since Debra isn't going to shoot tonight

Debra...at this point Cinnamon is coming up nicely....I'd test her again in an hour and let us know how she's doing then....after that, you can probably relax

Debra....do you have any plain canned pumpkin? Not pie filling.....a teaspoon or two per day could help if she has problems with constipation

A lot of cats like it and will eat it off the spoon

70 is good an hour ago she was at 62. If she can surf there and going up that would be great. Wow you handled that #56 really good!;)
There is always someone here to help! If she starts to head down just feed her & test. If her #'s are below 50 and she wont eat you can rub either Karo, honey or Pancake syrup directly on her gums.
IMHO I think she will continue to rise in numbers.....
    Darn laptops :banghead:

She may have diarrhea. It's more common with liver disease, and Cinnamon did not make it to the kitty litter box without both pooping and throwing up. Sounds like it might be diarrhea, , but Cinnamon's mum would have to clarify this.

Ah constipation. TiTi gets it a lot. I use Miralax - seems to help. TiTi sticks up her nose at pumpkin. :( Most of my other kitties love pumpkin.
