Remission after only 4 mo of insulin, now 9 mo and counting

My 15 year old cat was initially overweight and because diabetic. After less than one bottle of lantis (sp?) he went into remission. A couple of months ago he also became hyperthyroid. Anyway he is now normal weight and in remission. Because I was so broke I couldn't afford the expensive food and he was just eating cat chow - yes I know too high in carbs but I couldn't do anything about that, vet said we'd just deal with it by his insulin dose. I am wondering if this is sort of like human type 2 diabetes where some people, when they lose enough weight, are then fine with respect to being diabetic. In any case I am really thankful!

As a side note calibrating my glucose meter with the vet lab draws (relion micro) I found how much it was "off" (and being "off" is normal because these meters are calibrated for human blood and not calibrated for cat blood) really varied. When his "real" glucose was less than 100 the meter was only about 25-35 low. When his real glucose was really high, the meter was off by 100+ points. In other words how much it varied from his lab confirmed glucose was not linear.

This, by the way, is my second diabetic cat. My first one had hyperthyroid first then diabetes. He also went into remission and stayed that way.

 

They say that the stress and scare from being in the vets office can also cause higher numbers. This happened with my cat who tested 100 points higher in the vets office than my relion meter an hour after I had tested him at home. Of course, the difference could be for the reason you described as well.

Congrats on your kitty going into remission! What a relief for you both. This is my goal as well. My kitty was just diagnosed a little less than 3 weeks ago.

What did you do to get your kitty's weight down? Did you have to make any reductions in his insulin dosing while he was losing weight?
