Hi. It is 11 months since Amethyst started Cabergoline. Unfortunately I have had to increase her Insulin not decrease it:( The owner of Animal Pharm has been sending Amethyst her Cabergoline and Gabapentin every month no charge. God Bless her. I do not want to keep taking this donation if it is not helping Amethyst. My question is-Can I just stop the Cabergoline or do I need to taper her off?? I am keeping her on the Gabapentin but would like to remove the Cabergoline and see what happens. Thank you for your help:bighug:

@Bronx's dad I think Paul has heard the answer to this question. I think you do need to taper, but not sure by how much.

What does her breathing sound like? Is it on the inhale or exhale? It's common for acros to get breathing issues as the soft tissue grows in their pharynx. It is called stridor. You can see youtube videos of it. Pred helps inflammation, not the soft tissue growth.

Constipation can also be a side effect of acromegaly as it affects organs, such as the intestines. Nothing to do with cabergoline.

    Hi Pamela,

When I asked Chris from RVC about weening Bronx off of Cabergoline, here was his response:

"... but when discontinuing this medication i do it gradually (typically over three to four weeks) because there is a condition in humans called dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome which seems to happen when this medication is discontinued abruptly. I do not know if this condition happens at all in cats but I have wanted to be as safe as possible."

I only had a week or so to taper off Bronx since he was going in for the SRT, and he was fine. But Bronx was not Cabergoline very long, Amethyst has been on it a long time so I would say try to taper off over 3-4 weeks like Chris suggested just to be safe.

I only had a week, so just used a little less each day. So the longer you can stretch it out, giving a little less each day, the better. So sorry that it didn't help Amethyst, but it was worth a try.

Leo has the soft tissue growths in his throat. He snores like a sailor. In the past 6 months, his breathing is also bit labored, and kinda wheezy. Could be some of the small cell lymphoma spreading, or could be some Acro issue. And as part of this issue, he has trouble swallowing and eating.

Sorry to hear Amethyst is not doing very well. You have done a stellar job keeping her BG regulated. :bighug:
