    hi all,
Wanted to drop in and say “hello, I’ve missed you all and think of you often” and always when remembering Gussie..you were my village in so many, many ways and I am as always so ever grateful.
My Lola now has stage 3 renal failure so I am doing a quick relearn and study of everything I learned 15 years ago when I had two civvies with it. She’s doing pretty well, better living through chemistry as they say...
I pop in every now and then, but think of you all more often than I pop in.

For the new folks, hang in there, it is a wild and sometimes frustrating and confusing ride this sugar dance, but you and your furry kit will find your rhythm, your own steps to the dance..

    Big Hugs and scritches ,
    Les

Also wanted to let any of the family living in So.Cal know that the Cat Care Clinic in orange, ca is doing clinical trials for treatment for Diabetes Mellitus. Don’t know what exactly it’s about other than new treatments. I’m not endorsing or recommending, just passing on info that the trials are taking place.

    From their newsletter:
    Clinical Trials

The clinic is currently enrolling patients in three different clinical trials.

Diabetes Mellitus – This study involves newly diagnosed diabetic cats that are exhibiting at least one clinical sign of diabetes such as increased water consumption and urination, weight loss with good appetite, and elevated fasting blood sugar. Patients cannot have any other serious concurrent diseases including pancreatitis. Initial study is 30 days and includes 5 visits but if the patient is doing well there is an option to continue for 180 days.

Urine Spraying – This study involves treatment of cats that are spraying vertical surfaces at least 3 times a week and are not currently on any other treatment. The cause of the spraying needs to be determined to be behavioral. Cats must be housed indoors only and there cannot be more than three cats in the household. The study involves 3 visits during a 30 day period.

Chronic Kidney Disease – This study involves cats in all stages of chronic kidney disease and monitoring their response to a novel monthly treatment. The hope is to slow the progression of the disease and to improve the associated clinical signs which will lead to improved quality of life. Currently there is no FDA approved therapeutic treatment for CKD in cats. Enrolled patients will visit the clinic 8 times during a 7 month period.

Trial participation is completely voluntary and you have the option to withdraw at any time. If you would like to discuss your kitty’s eligibility, please call the clinic at 714-282-2287 and ask to speak to our coordinating technician, Erika Perez, RVT.

(Thought I would pass on the info in case there are interested folks. Hope it is ok to post here..it came in their newsletter today and I thought of my LL family..)

    Hi Les,
Good to hear from you. Others here have written recently about a new FD trial. I can't find the thread at the moment, but maybe someone will chime in.
All is good here. We have a new cat: a 10 year-old civvie we have named "Gus". He is a "snow cat" (loves snow and is built for it) and must surely have some Norwegian Forest Cat ancestory.

Sending lots of healing vines for Lola.

    Hi! :bighug:
I am so happy to hear about your new addition! :cat: Give your Gus some special scritches for me:bighug::bighug:. Must be special! All those who carry that name are! Well at least in my biased opinion!;) Sounds like a beautiful guy. Does he have the furry snowshoes? I love those!
Thank you so much for the vines, I’m doing the sub qs every nite with her and it’s so funny, being that she has never really left her feral beginnings behind, I was sure she would never let me do sub Qs. But, leave it to a cat to be contrary to what you think you know, she is really
good about the routine :woot:and on her good nites will even purr and make biscuits :cat:! Go figure! But I’m happy and grateful! It’s so funny, when Gussie was diagnosed with diabetes I was so scared, I remember thinking, I know renal disease management, but nothing about this new experience and how to help. Now I feel the opposite, like I know diabetes ( or at least who to turn to for expert advice and support :bighug:) and am not afraid of it, but feel kinda lost with renal disease management! But I did renal for 10 years straight as my second renal cat was diagnosed and put on sub Qs literally the day after his littermate went on ahead after 5 years of successful management. Funny how the human brain works! So am getting back in the renal cat swing of things..switching nurse hats so to speak!
And I am SO grateful for all I learned here about appy and how to keep kits feeling better..ah Cerenia! ;)
Hugs to you! Is it brutally cold in your neck of the woods? It’s been a really cold winter here, haha even cold enough that people are wearing socks!:joyful::bighug:

    Hi Paula! :bighug:
Congrats on your new addition too!! :cat: Is that Olive in the photo? She’s a beauty! Kudos for taking in another lucky sugar cat!! I know she’s in the hands of an expert Bean! Lucky kitty. On this end, I’m on a crash course to relearn everything I put in the obsolete file of my brain on CKD!:p Funny the files seem harder to find these days...;) otherwise Life moves by pretty much the same..funny how fast time flies these days...I blink and a years gone by!
Hugs to you and scritches to Olive:bighug::cat:

Hi Les. I still pop in here but not nearly as much. No m sure you know that Tanya’s has all the info you will ever need on kidney disease. I’m glad your kitty is cooperating. It took two peoplewhen Tiffany was first diagnosed. Hope all is good with you otherwise.

    Hi Elise!!
So great to hear from you! Yeah, I went straight back to Tanyas, and bought the only reference you could ever need on CKD she put out! Basically it’s everything on her site in printed form. I also refound Scooters page for sources for mail order supplies. I was so scared she would be a multi person cat too..I was sure of it and dreading it as she aged up toward that age..but she surprised me! But I’ll take the good things where they come!:);)
I hope all is well with you too..do you still have the civvies? They are not small any longer I bet if they are still with you:bighug:
    Hugs

Hi Les, so nice to hear from you! You were the one who kept me sane early on and told me to keep those patience pants on when I was overwhelmed and freaking out. Will never forget the calming support you gave us :bighug:

The girls are two years four months old now and I’ve had them just over two years. Time flies. They are both full of the devil! One even chews and eats towels, q-tips,strange things and the other ate a popsicle stick! I’ve learned to empty the trash or keep it enclosed, lol. :bighug:

    Hey Les!

Great to hear from you. I’m sorry to hear Lola has CKD but she’s in the best hands. With proactive treatment, they can be stable for a long time. My own Gus was stage 2 CKD for four years and was still stable when we helped him cross due to what our vet was certain was lymphoma.

Sending :bighug: :bighug: for you and vines for Lola.

    Hi Marje! :bighug:
Thanks for the encouragement and the vote of confidence:bighug: I’m hoping so..it’s not new territory for me but I’m really rusty..I’m hoping it’s like riding a bike, it comes back to you even if you’ve been off it for a long time..in the meantime I’m hitting the books!:bookworm::bookworm::bookworm:, soaking up that refresher course! I saved all my records from Buster and Big Jett so will dig them out and revisit what I need to watch for. I’m rusty on the numbers game for that.
Hope all is well with you and yours..it’s nice to hear from you too!:bighug::bighug:

    Hiya!
Thank you! Nice to see you! Love the new avatar!:cat: That’s a mighty fine hat! I may just take you up on your offer one of these fine days! I see you may be somewhat of an expert on what ails Miss Lola..my knowledge base is older, like waaay old, so am trying to get back up to speed as fast as I can..Thx so much! One thing that all who knew me here know is I’m a testaholic, a numbers kinda bean so this CKD is harder for me in that way, I don’t have an ongoing ( Gussie was so accommodating with my ever testing quest to know what was going on in his big gorgeous self) set of numbers that fill me in. Feel like it’s a surprise door each time I go in, can’t mentally prep! Wish there were a way to home test for the numbers for CKD! Tho I bet Lola is mighty glad there isn’t! Hope things are going well in your neck of the woods as they say:bighug:
    I miss ya!

Hi Bron! It surely has hasn’t it? Seems a blink ago we were all here together where days were quick and frantic, and nights were even more so!:nailbiting:
I still expect to see Gussie rounding the corner, but that’s ok. Maybe one day I will! How are things down your way? Have you been surviving the heatwave?? My sister said it’s been tough in that it has been so very pervasive. I’m hoping you are doing well, I think of you and Sheba often, she and Gussie sure took similar paths so closely together, I will always feel they are linked over on the other side of the bridge:bighug:
Big hugs and thank you for the vote of confidence!

Checking in here! (I do every so often.) This thread is like a mini reunion group! (Still a few people missing though.) I really miss this support, but my life just hasn't been very structured in the last year-and-a-half. How time flies! Breaks my heart that every time I check in & I see that we've lost another sugar kitty. I still have my Taffy, and I know I would not if it had not been for the support of everybody on this forum.

Taffy is doing well, though. He's pretty much status quo, little ups and downs, but we stay steady at about .75u on average. I think about starting up Taffy's spreadsheet again (I do keep track in a notebook) but I just don't know if I can remember how to do it!

Les, I live even nearer to you now. I live off of Imperial by the whole foods. Maybe we'll run into each other sometime!

It is so nice to hear from you, Les and I too am sorry about the CKD. Forrest was DX in Stage 2 last May and six months later, no change in his blood work. You are such a great caregiver to your furbabies and I know with your good care that Lola can stay stable and not progress.

Sending lot of vines your way!
