Could somebody have a look at Max's SS and tell me if I should up to 6 units? I'll be able to monitor and test for the next four cycles. Sorry I haven't been able to get a curve done or a lot of spot checks. Been on some long stretches at work and Max doesn't much like the ear pokies anymore, so I try to keep them limited.

    Thanks!

That 168 yesterday morning makes me think he might have been a little lower in the night, and if his nadir was below 150 you would hold the dose.

I would probably run a curve before making a decision. Today's amps is interestingly lower than last nights +6 could be today would be a good time to see if he has any lower numbers midcylce if you're about. Probably to late now to suggest you run a curve today.

Good morning Sarah, I wouldn't change his dose until you have a chance to run a curve. Hopefully today and for the next few cycles you can get some more mid-cycle checks to see what he's doing at those times of day. He may not like the pokes anymore but always give a treat - so it becomes more about the treat than the poke. And remember, those pokes are literally saving his life. I have to tell myself that whenever Luci winces at a poke or a shot...she seems especially sensitive in her right ear - so I try to skip that ear and do a few more on the left before I go back to the right. She's cooperative and I often wonder why - but she never seems to know ahead of time that this is going to hurt. btw I poke myself twice yesterday accidentally...and yep...it's a sting...but it doesn't last and it doesn't stop me from opening up that next lancet....hang in there. You're showing him how much you love him with ever poke - remember the old song, 'Love Hurts'...??

His numbers have been all over the place! Super high and then significantly lower. I'm not sure what's going on. He's eating the same food and getting 5.75 units twice a day (or as close as I can get to 5.75--quarter units are tricky!) I suspect it's to do with his pain levels. I'm not sure if his pancreatitis has cleared yet and I know he has arthritis and neuropathy in his hind legs/hips. I'm still trying to find a good regimen for his pain killers. I've been doing more Gabapentin than Buprenex these last couple of days because I'm unsure how much of the effect he is actually getting with the Bupe what with it having to be absorbed through the gums/cheeks and all. The Gabapentin he can just swallow and be done with it and I know exactly how much he's getting.

I didn't increase his dose this morning after seeing that yellow pre-shot number. I'm doing a curve today...every 3 hours. Keep your eyes on his SS for updates!

Well, Max seems to be surfing really steady in the yellows today.

This is good but I'm confused!

If it's p'titis the bupre is more effective. It absorbs very quickly when squirted in cheek pocket, much faster than gab pill will start working. To be most effective you should keep the schedule consistent like you do insulin shots. If the pain gets ahead it takes longer to help.

Think of any time you had to take pain med even Tylenol. If you take it right away it starts nipping those sensors and help keeping it from getting worse. If you wait thinking it's not bad enough yet, pain gets worse and the med doesn't seem to help at all.

One thing you don't want to do is stop the meds to soon. If they relapse it's usually worse and takes longer to treat. Ask how I know.........

The Gabapentin is a liquid, not a pill.

This is what Max looks like when he sees me pick up the liquid medicine syringe! 20190310_125952.jpg

Looking like a pretty flat yellow cycle. If it continues to stay flat yellow, you could be in for a drop tonight or tomorrow in his numbers, so continue testing tonight to catch any lower number. That will help you to know whether it's time for an increase or not.

That photo is so cute, but I know he's not amused.

Max has started acting strange today. In and out of the litterbox, pooped a bit in there, walked around the room acting very uncomfortable, vomited, had some loose stools on the litter mat, rubbed his butt all across my floor. What's going on? I didn't give him the Cerenia today because I'm trying to see if he'll be ok without it. If he pukes again I'll give him a dose tonight. No buprenex today, only gabapentin. Should I do an evening dose of Bupe?

Have you considered giving Bupe subQ?
This is how Nelli has gotten it. I feel much more confident about complete dose and OMG, it has worked incredibly well for her arthritis :cat::bighug:
Bummer is- almost impossible for me to get from vet anymore :(.
If (given occasionally), until Adequin starts working (fingers and paws crossed!) what is the problem | issue?
Nelli is 19- 20ish y/o for God sakes! What is the issue, I wonder o_O?!?

Do you think Max might be constipated?

    Can you track his poops?
It has been almost impossible for me to with Nell b/c she is outside all day- i.e. no litter box
How I discovered was her, all of a sudden, after/ before breakfast she’d try in LB over and over... nothing :(. Hungry ate a bit but then would throw up :(

Thought you might know being the queen of constipated kitties and all, haha. He's acting ok now. Does Nelli scoot her butt? And does a bit of liquid/soft stools come out after?

No. This she (definitely) does not do :)- God knows, I watched her for hours straight during her woes ;). I have read about this phenomenon elsewhere here on Board o_O tho.

My guess is that when he gets the more solid poop out (after struggling for a bit) the "fresher" (haha) built up stools come out after and are a lot softer. But that's only a guess. And I imagine the scooting is because the impacted poop feels pretty uncomfortable. Does anyone else have any constipation stories?

Wonder if Max needs his anal glands checked or expressed. Scooting, for dogs at least, is a symptom of too full or irritated anal glands. Or the pooping might be irritating Max’s bum. Either way, I’d track his poops and note consistencies too.

But vomiting after pooping might be constipation too.

Yeah, he was struggling to poop and then he vomited right beside the litter box. Hasn't vomited since he got some poop out. Messy butt though! It seems like after he passed the hard bit the softer stuff came out right after.

I've heard from some of the folks that have a lot of experience with dealing with recurrent pancreatitis, is that not to discontinue the nausea meds too soon, if you come off them too early it can set them off on another episode.

That could be because the anal glands are full and they will scoot their butts to get relief. The stuff that comes out is brown, liquid and realllllllly stinky!

Poor Max, I hope he gets to feeling better! If he can just stay with the lower numbers.
