Hi everyone, we recently switched from Vetsulin to Lantus so we’re new with the depot. Mr. Kitty’s been on 1U for 4 cycles and we’re not seeing any improvement. Is this common while waiting for the depot to fill up? I know we hold the dose for one week but I’m so impatient. We choose SLGS because he eats a little dry kibble (YA) along with his fancy feast (free feed). I just want my boy to feel better.

    Thanks for reading.

I am impatient as well, Like to see things moving. Any way to get him off dry food all together? Then you could move to the more aggressive protocol. I will let someone more experienced advise you on the dose, just wanted to give you a bump to the top of the list. It may help if you put the question mark prefix in your title and state that you have a question, It will get more eyes on you. :)

One of the biggest lessons you'll learn with Lantus is patience. Ask @Marje and Gracie for a pair of "patience pants."

It does take roughly 5 - 7 days fo the depot to form. It's unlikely you'll see much movement before then. Lantus is also very different than Vetsulin, although, you didn't really see Vetsulin yanking down numbers early in the cycle, which is typical of a short acting insulin. Lantus is less potent and far more gentle. As a result, Lantus does best once the dose is at a point where it can latch on to lower numbers and ideally, give Mr. Kitty a lovely flat cycle. That said, our kitties rarely read the instruction manual.

If you plan on keeping Young Again in the food mix, you will want to read up on the Start Low Go Slow method of dosing. It's described in the sticky about our dosing methods. The other method, Tight Regulation, requires that your cat is on an entirely low carb, canned food diet. If you've not done so already, I'd encourage you to read over the sticky notes at the top of the board, The amount of information is overwhelming so please don't hesitate to ask questions.

Where in Ohio are you located? I'm in Columbus.

Thank you - how does one edit the prefix? Mr. Kitty was eating YA in remission for almost a year and recently came out due to us switching (stupidly) to Dr. Elsey’s. We switched because my youngest cat developed terrible diarrhea and IBD after stealing Mr. Kitty’s YA, so we thought it would be better to put them all on a low carb kibble that wouldn’t give the poohs and boy we were wrong. Now they’re all on YA with zero nasty poohs and each eat about 1.5 cans of FF and 1/3C YA a day.

Here are a nice pair of comfy patience pants to wear, while you are waiting for the Lantus depot.

Im really trying to have patience. I’ve scoured the sticky’s, search the forums and fb posts. I honestly just needed to vent and think I’m a tad obsessed. This forum was a lifesaver when he was originally dx last year. We had trouble getting our vet to give us Lantus so we went back on a low dose of Vetsulin for a just short time while we waited for our new vet appointment. He came out of remission due to a food switch/case of the poohs/stress with my youngest cat....long boring story. We’re very happy we switched! We live in Heath and I work in New Albany, so not far from cbus. Thanks for responding :)

I'm glad Chris answered your question about the prefix.

Just one other point about prefixes -- we prefer you not use the 911 unless you think there is a serious emergency. If your cat is in low numbers and you're not sure what to do, just put something like, "Low numbers - help!" in your subject line and people will come running. It's rare that there's not someone online -- we have members here from all over the globe.

Hahaha...obsessed? Here? You're among a group of very dedicated/obsessed cat people. Welcome to people who understand. Read my post (#7) in Gabby's Legacy, in my signature. For many of us, this is like the Hotel California - we can check out any time we like but we never leave!!

Haha....I was definitely the Queen of Impatience. I believe it was one of Gracie’s missions to teach it to me :woot::woot: I’d prefer blingy pink patience pants if I had to wear pink.
