Leo was diagnosed last Thursday because he was walking funny. Which turned out to be neuropathy. His walking has gradually gotten worse. This morning he did walk to his litter box and then back out to the living room. Tonight when I got home he hadn't moved from his bed, had peed in it, and won't walk. He won't even stand up.

    What do I do?

Is he in pain? Is that why he isn't walking? The vet gave me Gabapentin, but I haven't been giving regularly. Should I?

Is there a store that I can buy the vit b to help treat it or do I have to order it online?

I just need some help. I don't know what to do. Thank you!!

I'm sorry Leo is having this issue. I don't have personal experience with neuropathy, but I have seen lots of stories of it being reversed when a cat's glucose is regulated. So, keep that in mind. There is hope! The methylcobalamin form of B12 is supposed to help, too. I think that, ideally, you want it with folic acid. I have most often seen Zobaline recommended here which people get online. Maybe someone will come along who can tell you if you can get what you need at a nutrition/vitamin store. I don't know for sure and wouldn't have any idea on dosing. The most important thing though is going to be getting his glucose under control as soon as possible.

Why did the vet give you Gabapentin? Is it supposed to be for his legs or something else?

It is for pain. I know human diabetics can have pain with neuropathy. So I'm guessing cats can too. Thank you so much for the encouragement! I appreciate it.

It can take some time for neuropathy to resolve and it needs a combination of methylcobalamin at the right dose and insulin therapy to get him well-regulated. Good luck and let us know if you have other questions.

I know it is prescribed for pain. I was wondering if the vet told you to give it for his legs or for something else.

Again, I don't have personal experience with neuropathy, though I have not seen anyone say their cat had to take pain medicine for it. However, if the vet actually gave it to you for that, I would say give it to Leo.

How much ProZinc are you giving him each dose? Also are you home testing?

Home testing is the best way to determine how well the dose is working. My suggestion is to try to switch Leo over to a low carb canned food diet. Most dry foods are high in carbs including prescription foods. However before you make the switch please learn to home test first. Switching to a lower carb food can significantly lower glucose levels. You may need to lower the dose to prevent hypoglycemia. If you are already testing, can you share his readings? You still may need to adjust the dose to get better control over his glucose levels.

By having the glucose levels under control and giving methyl B12. You should start to see improvement in the neuropathy in a few weeks.

Thank you all so much for you help and advice. Leo crossed the rainbow bridge this morning. His neuropathy worsened very fast. It moved to his eyes so he couldn't see. And his kidneys were failing. I'm wondering now if the diabetes was a secondary condition to something worse or he had it longer before showing signs. He just went downhill very fast.
