I am switching Maus from Vetsulin to Lantus tomorrow. I have read the stickys. After reading them a couple times I think that I have the main gist of it. My biggest problem is that I have no idea what the starting dose should be. Can anyone please help us? Thank you in advance.

Since you've been giving .25 of the Vetsulin, you'd start at .25 of the Lantus.

Remember, it can take 5-7 days to fill the Lantus depot before you see the true results of that dose...but some cats react faster so keep up with your testing

Vetsulin is a U40 insulin (40 units per ml). Make sure you are using U100 syringes for the Lantus.

I will only have 3 days to do close monitoring all day because I go back to work next week. I hope that will be enough.

The biggest differences for me were: 1) the U-100 syringes the pharmacy gave us had much smaller needles, so I felt the need to part my cat's fur enough for me to actually see the needle go in at first. After a week or so, I could do it by feel again with the smaller needles without worrying about a potential fur shot. 2) my cat is responding much, much better to the Lantus and is acting like a kitten again! I hope the switch goes well for you too!!!

It is wonderful to hear that your kitty is responding well to Lantus! I truly hope that Maus can achieve the same results!

Just picked up some syringes. Question: how on earth are you supposed to draw .25 units? The half-unit marking is almost nothing.

You do the best you can. It's not so important that you get exactly .25 (or .75) but that you try to keep whatever you decide as consistent as possible.

Sienne and Gabby (GA) has suggested that there are many more experienced users of Lantus/Levimir on the Lantus ISG. You may want to think about posting over there.
Lantus / Basaglar (glargine) and Levemir (detemir)

Since you have switched to Lantus, you'll have more people that also use Lantus over there to help you.

Due to some unfortunate circumstances we have not switched yet. And, yes, I was already planning on marking the switch on the spread sheet. :)

Lower insulin prices from Mark's Marine Pharmacy in Canada. They did have a backlog in orders. Call them if that is the holdup for the switch.

Good luck Matt, Maus looks good already on that +2 on her spreadsheet, don't forget to also change your signature that she is now on lantus and the date, cant wait to see how she does. You may want to start posting over on the Lantus board also. You can take a look at mine and see how we post it, and also copy the previous days results and put that in. If you don't know how to do it let me know
