My cat Max was diagnosed with diabetes last month. He is on Lantus 1 unit every 12 Hours. He is on DM right now and I m looking to get him on something higher in protein and lower in carbs. There are so many choices out there its overwhelming. Can anyone suggest the best wet cat food out there for diabetics. Tku.

In the US, there is a good list on the catinfo web site of Dr. Lisa Pierson, a nutrionist vet. Here is a link to the list. Click on the blue. You want foods under 10% carbs for a diabetic kitty. Any foods you have that are higher than 10% are good to keep around in case you need higher carbs if their blood sugar numbers go low. Are you home testing Max's blood sugars?

I feed the low carb varieties of Fancy Feast and Friskies. The low-carb Fancy Feast are the "classic" varieties if in the USA. For Friskies they are the pate varieties.
Here is the most recent list of various canned foods and the carb content and other info
    http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/links-to-food-charts.174182/

There are "better" foods like the low carb varieties of made by Weruva. Just note that Weruva and other high quality foods are a lot more expensive. Frieskies is acceptable quality and it reasonably priced.

Tku for the. info. Yes testing him at home. His level at 5 30pm 1/14 was 267. Before 12 hour feeding and insulin. I didn't know if there was a one can that people preferred over the rest. I have karo syrup on hand if sugar levels get to low.

Every cat is different, but my Billy loves all the Fancy Feast classic pates and the Friskies pates. Except the beef flavor ones, he hates those. We tried the Fancy Feast Naturals, because they are listed at 0 carbs, but like most of the 0 carb wet foods, the texture is gummy. None of my cats like that and Billy flat out said "that's not food and I'm not eating it!" My best advice is to try a variety of flavors and see what interests him.

I don’t feed Fancy Feast. So many kitties seem to like it, then will eat nothing else after that. It is rather high in phosphorus if a kitty has kidney issues. My girl did well on raw food, some manufactured, some made at home with a premix.

Friskies used to have a food called Special Diet that was good for both problems but sadly they discontinued it a few years ago. I'm not sure what most people switched to after that. I think Wellness and possibly Wevura are low in both phos and carbs.

Absolutely, you just need a low carb/low phosphorus food. I had one kitty with urinary issues, and my Neko got kidney disease, which also needs low phosphorus. I fed raw food (no ground bone which is high in P). Look at the list I linked in post #2 for canned options. You want carbs under 10% and phosphorus under or as close to 200 as you can get on an As Fed basis. Many of the Weruva are good choices. This 2017 list is a little out of date now, but it also contains low carb/low phosphorus options.

Make sure you add water to the canned food. You want to flush out the crystals. Extra water is good for diabetics too.

Have you heard about Zobaline? You can also get it on Amazon. That and getting Max into good blood sugar numbers will help his neuropathy.

Zobaline is made by LifeLink. You can buy it from the manufacturer at the link I provided above, or buy from Amazon.

Fish oil is a good anti inflammatory.

Zobaline has no impact on his blood sugar. It just helps him get over the neuropathy. So no, do not worry about giving insulin.

Tku. You have no idea how much I appreciate this. I ve had cats 10 years ago that were both diabetics brother sister that had low blood sugar. Good thing I had Karo syrup on hand but that was a scary experience I don't want to go through again. That's why I am thankful for this grp.

Does anyone know how long after u give insulin will it reach its peak before starting to climb again? Max s blood at 5:30 this morning was 164. He usually gets 1 unit of Lantus. I gave him 1/2 unit instead of 1 unit. 10:35 am it was 109. will it continue to go down?

    Okay.

This is how we do the insulin and bg records, the Spreadsheet is similar

    A.m pre-insulin

    +2 hours after a.m insulin

    +4 hours after a.m insulin

    +5 hours after a.m insulin

    +6 hours after a.m insulin

    +7 hours after a.m insulin

    +9 hours after a.m insulin

    +12 hours P.m pre-insulin

It is the a.m pre-insulin bg, the peak bg, and p.m pre-insulin we try to know.

Looks like it's too high. "Grain Free" doesn't mean "low carb"....they just replaced the grains with things like potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas and chickpeas.

Most of us feed our own cats plain old Fancy Feast Classics, Friskies pates or 9-Lives ground because they're under 10% carbs, easy to find and affordable.

There are lots of other choices though. This FOOD CHART lists a lot of foods and their nutritional breakdown. You just need to choose foods that are less than 10% carbs.

So with the smaller cans how much would u feed a 14.4 lbs cat. Right now he is eating 5.5 oz each feeding

If you want to switch him to Fancy Feast, the cans are 3oz instead of 5.5....so if he's eating 5.5 twice a day, that's 11oz so you'd need to feed about 4 cans of Fancy Feast.

Maria, great you are doing a glucose curve and good you have him only 0,5 unit, since he got so low numbers.

    But You've done Great!

    A.m pre-insulin 175, 0.5 units insulin

    +2 hours 78

    +8 hours 102

Did you do a + 4-6 hours bg test too?

Look at these great numbers, Max and Maria! You were very wise to lower the insulin dose to just 0.5 Units so he doesn't end up in a severe hypo. Stick with the maximum 0.5 units morning and evening for some days and we will see how he is doing then.

And try keep get the a.m pre-insulin bg, the + 6 hours after and the p.m pre-insulin bgs.

    You did Great!

How is Max feeling, is he grumpy from all the bg testing?

Give yourself and Max a treat for such a Great Job!
