Hi, Tiger he's 17 for about a week now has been drinking more water and acting a little lazy, not lethargic. Haven't taken him to the vet yet. I checked his glucose at home(I have a sugarcat named Jazz Man) with Reli on meter. It read 450 about 15mins ago. I'm going to give him his dinner in about an hour. Should I just go ahead and give him 1 unit of Prozinc while he is eating? He doesn't have a problem eating ff pate. We know he's high right now. Or should I wait a half hour after he eats and retest. Then if still high give him 1 unit to start with?
Since you don't have an official diagnosis and just one test, I'd probably wait a day or two and do some more testing to make sure. If he stays in that high range, then I don't see any reason why you couldn't go ahead and start him on insulin. With ProZinc, you really don't need to wait after feeding to shoot. It's fine to shoot while his head is in the bowl.
If you're going to be up, test again in about 3 hours...see if eating brings his numbers down. I do suspect though if he's in the 400's, that you're probably looking at having a 2nd diabetic cat.
Today Pre- 520, shot .5 and getting ready to do a recheck. I also started him on Amoxi just in case it is a infection.
