I have a fairly newly diagnosed diabetic cat on Prozinc 2u twice daily. She is doing very well. Glucose at vet 106 a few days ago. Tonight I dropped and broke her insulin vial before I gave it to her. It is Saturday night, of course, and vet doesn’t open till Monday morning. I did leave voicemail hoping vet listens to VM’s on weekends. I called the emergency pet hospital and they don’t have any. In a stable diabetic cat, is she likely to have problems before Monday? I am not particularly worried about her missing tonight, but I am more concerned about another day. She was diabetic for a few weeks or more before we found out this diagnosis, her glu at time of diagnosis was 406 but no DKA. She also had UTI which was treated and has been stable ever since. So I am thinking she is probably capable of carrying a high glucose for a day or so, but wondered if anyone else found themselves in this predicament on a Saturday night.
Do you have ketone test strips? So you can test her urine for ketones? If not, please go buy some at a drugstore ASAP. How is her appetite? Do you have a meter, so you can test her at home? What is your cat's name? I'm guessing you are named Sara. Diagnosis date? We've had cat's go into DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis), that skipped a weekends worth of insulin. Pancreatitis? Nausea? Vomiting? Do you know anyone, a human anyone, that might have insulin of some type, and could let you have a few syringe fulls? Lantus, Levemir, Vetsulin/Caninsulin even NPH (Humulin N, Novolin N) insulin will do in a pinch. Maybe someone you know has a diabetic cat and lives close to you? There are definitely types of insulin you would NOT want to use for a cat. Like Novolin R or Humulin R insulin. Don't suppose you live in Canada? Or close enough to drive over the border? No prescription needed to buy insulin in most provinces of Canada. It happens, having the insulin vial drop out of your hand and have it shatter on the tile floor. Been there, done that. A BG of 106 needs to be put in context. That is why we have new members copy our Spreadsheet (SS) template and create their own copy and then link it into their signature.
