Hey everyone! Bodie has been on the low end for him for a couple days now pre-stick. Our vet gave us a "no-stick" at 100. He's at 113 now, should get one unit, but I"m wondering if the one unit is going to be too much for him considering the one unit has been our dose even when he's in the upper 200's/300's, and it brings him down quite a bit. We were thinking of trying .5units tonight instead. Thoughts?

Have you taken a look at the Sticky Note on Dosing Methods and decided if you'd like to follow Tight Regulation or Start Low Go Slow as a dosing method? The answer to that question helps determine what you should do tonight.

Thank you! Yes, I did in the beginning; I will look again now. We were doing tight regulation to start, but I'm having a hard time getting enought sleep for my new job trying to get up in the middle of the night to get a reading during his night cycle. We're at 8am and 8pm so I'm having to get up around 1am ( bedtime is 10 for work)...I don't know that it's sustainable. I'll read both again now..

You don't need to get a mid-cycle test every night …...if you get a "before bed" test (like at 10 or 11), that should tell you if you really need to get another test in later or not.

Of course if you happen to get up at 2am to answer the call of nature, you might as well grab a test, right?...LOL A lot of us would drink a large glass of water in the evening so we had to get up. You do eventually learn to test without really waking up! There were lots of times that I didn't remember getting a test in the middle of the night but there was a new number on my meter!

wow! That's skill! Bodie is an un-neutered ( for now) foster who lives upstairs quarantied off from my other 6 animals, so just waking up and casually getting a BS reading isn't really an option. SO I think even though we started on tight regulation, I'd like to do start low go slow so that we don't need so many tests. Can someone please LMK if I should reduce his insulin tonight with that considered?? or help me find the sticky's on the TR/SLGS methods so I can try and figure it out myself? I can't find them

Here's the Sticky on the dosing methods

If you're going to do SLGS, he earned a reduction today by dropping below 90 so his new dose would be .75

Please put either TR or SLGS in your signature, whichever you choose, so we don't have to ask each time.

we started with TR but I think SLGS sounds more sustainable for our work schedules. Assuming it's okay to switch to that now? AND also, do you think the .5 is an okay decision for tonight? thanks

The lowered dose tonight was fine, but the a 0.25 unit reduction was earned under SLGS, by going under 90. Your new dose tomorrow would be 0.75 units.

hi everyone!! can someone please take a look at his spreadsheet? we did the reduction, been doing .75 every 12 hours now. He's a bit higher than he was ( still under 200's every 12 hours), wondering if we should go back up to 1 unit? or try .75 at night and 1 unit in the am?? thanks

I can't tell how low this dose is taking Bodie - you need to get some mid cycle tests in. Without those, we can't tell how 0.75 units is doing. We determine how to change the dose based on how low it's taking him, not the preshots. Those tell you if it's safe to give insulin.

Realized tonight when I got home from work my husband gave cloudy insulin this morning and this evening. I immediately went to get a refill of our Lantus Pen to have a fresh pen in the am for his shot, and the pharmacy would no longer sell me a single pen. they wanted me to buy 5 for $495. Needless to say, I have to call around in the morning and hope and pray I can find a pharmacy who will sell me a single pen.
Question is- if it takes us a few hours to get a pen, how late is it okay to give him his dose? He usually gets it at 8am. I'm hoping we can have a pen by at least 10:30. Okay to give his shot at 10:30, and then stay on the 8pm shot schedule tomorrow night?
I KNOW..this is a total fail I will not let happen again!!!

No.....if you really need to stay on the 8am/8pm schedule, you should just skip the AM dose

If you do have to give a late shot sometime in the future, you should work your way back to your chosen shot time by adjusting by 15 minutes per cycle or 30 minutes per day

So true. Last night was going to be a no test night. At 3:30 am I found myself recording a mid cycle test.

I also work and test at 8 and 8. It's now so routine that I can test, feed a snack, record in spreadsheet, and be back in bed in 15 minutes.
