He was 159 in the middle of the night and 90 an hour before AMPS with an AlphaTrak2. He ate Dr Elsey's, but we haven't shot yet. He seems to have a couple good days, thin then a low that makes us reduce, then a series of high days that may be bounces or a failed reduction. Then he runs in 300s at the reduction amount until we go back to the previous dose and start the whole routine again.

So, I could skip and let his depot deplete a little in case that's what makes his numbers fall or I could reduce to .5 u, or shoot the 1 unit and manage with food.

    Thoughts?

30 minutes later he is 133 on the pet meter and 88 on the human meter. I'll test again in 15 minutes and need to decide then since it will be an hour past normal shot time.

I think if you can test and monitor, I would stick to the dose. You are following a modified SLGS with a lower reduction point, right?
He is seeing good numbers on this dose without going too low.

The 133 is the food bump. You have fed him but not shot him, correct ?

I agree with Bhooma - can you update your SS? As long as you can monitor, and prop up if needed, I would keep this dose until Philly "earns" his reduction!

Shooting low to stay low really is the way Lantus should work!

I shot his regular dose. The 133 may be a food bump so I'll monitor and prop him up if needed this morning. Thanks all.

Hi again! Can you get a +2 (or even +1.5) instead of waiting on the +3?

Just a thought Beck FWIW - lowering below 70 on an AT isn't really much different from the auto-reduction of 68. I know 68 and 50 (reduction points) are our only comparisons between the human and pet meters. There was a time when Tina just wouldn't go under 68 on the AT. When I switched to a human meter, she went under 50 almost right away. That was 11/7-8/2019.

There doesn't seem to be a huge difference between the pet meter (AT2) and human meter (NovaMax) at lower numbers. At +2 he is 67 on the AT2 and 63 on the NM.

We have taken many reductions so far after one lower reading which hasn't worked, so I'm thinking the idea of waiting for three similar low readings before reducing. He eats dry food so I'm not able to follow TR, but I think that practice makes sense unless he drops even lower today.

Interesting. I have been doing some tests with both meters over the past few days. The readings are almost identical right now. I may switch to a human meter at some point, but I really like the AT2 and it helps with conversations with my vet.

Since Philly was diagnosed in May (not a long term diabetic), wouldn't you want to reduce to .75 after the under 68 on the AT?

I do see what you mean about the back and forth of doses and thinking of 3x under before a reduction might stick. But the 3x under is usually reserved for kitties diagnosed for a year or longer, right? I guess I'm just thinking out loud . . . I see you have been a member longer than I have!

I changed to a human meter, more or less to "prove" we were ready to reduce (be all green for a week).
I also liked the AT, and I wasn't getting any vet assistance - so it was fun when I finally gave in and switched to the human meter - then got lucky and went straight for remission.

    Thank you @Bandit's Mom

    Even shorter term diabetic kitties:

reduction *earned* after 3 drops between 40 - 50 mg/dL on three separate days for kitties who have shown they do not hold reductions well and following TR,

So Beck has a good idea and is within guidelines;) Except for that little dry food thing and TR.
I have plenty more to learn!
