How do I know if Charlie is going into remission? The last month or so he’s been regulated between 4.5 and 6.5 (80 and 115). He was getting 0.15 units but now we’re at 0.1 units at most, but lately it’s been either “needle juice” or nothing. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10HhU24iVIYtPcCWP2nAyfVv447nQp7o_s6WQsg2yk5M/edit His diet has been Young Again Mature since the beginning of Nov.
I would say Charlie is getting close. Here is a post on when you know a cat is ready to go OTJ. Reminder: *earning* reductions and starting OTJ trials I see you haven't been getting any mid cycle tests lately. Would you have time to do that tomorrow? We do like to see a spreadsheet where a cat is all green for a week before going to the formal OTJ trial. Maybe if after this weekend you can get the odd spot check mid cycle and he's still green, you could start a trial on Monday.
Yea I work from home so I can def get mid-cycle readings. I stopped doing them bc he was always stable mid-day and the strips and so expensive in Canada. It I can def do it tomorrow so get a curve.
A curve tomorrow is probably more than you need, maybe a spot check somewhere between +4 and +7 tomorrow and Sunday. I'm in Canada - so I know the cost of strips!
So I’ve done a couple mid cycle tests. Other than the day he got into his brothers Hills MD food, he hasn’t gone above 5.5 (100) since I stopped insulin on January 7
I don't know if you've seen them yet, but we have some instructions for OTJ trials. Charlie's looking good. Here are the instructions, consider yourself in day 5 of 14: —If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day. —If he is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working! —Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. He may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion. —After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!! Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on. Once he is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Tyler is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet! Good luck with the trial!!!
Thank you for that info. I definitely don’t wanna jinx anything but I’m just gonna keep doing what I’m doing and we really hope see green . I was really excited to see him regulate after those blue numbers the other day
Party time!! 14 days no insulin! I’m going to have a very hard time testing only weekly LOL. I might test every 2 to 3 days to start. so “weekly” for a month and then monthly testing after that?
