Hello everyone! My name is Kole and I’m new to this forum. I’m a Cat Mom of four: Felix, Charlie, Fiona, and Gus!

I recently discovered this forum. Charlie was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a few months ago and the clinic who treated him with I-131 radiodine sent me information regarding feline nutrition and a link to Dr. Lisa Pierson’s website. After more research, I found this forum. Although none of my cats are diabetic, I have been reading through the forum threads and have learned so much information! I hope it’s okay that I have joined although my cats are not diabetic.

After learning all of this new information regarding feline nutrition, I’m in the process of transitioning all four cats to wet food. My question is regarding Charlie. Charlie is 10 years old. He is in overall good health aside from his hyperthyroidism diagnosis. However, after radioiodine treatment, his thyroid levels have gone back to normal. He will have another lab test done in March to ensure his thyroid levels are staying normal. Charlie also had a urinary blockage at the age of 1 year old. I was told he had urinary crystals and he was prescribed Hill’s C/d urinary care food. He eats a combination of wet and dry but has boycotted the wet and likes to eat the dry. I found a wet food on Dr. Lisa’s list that meets the criteria she recommends: Purina Pro Plan Focus Adult Urinary Tract Health Formula Chicken Entree in Gravy. Charlie liked this food at first but now he is sick of it. He will sometimes eat it if I sprinkle little pieces of Purebites treats on top. He is eating a combination of this and the hills c/d dry.

I want to try some other wet foods to see if Charlie will approve. I started introducing Fancy Feast Classic Pate’s to the other cats and they love it. However I did notice that the Fancy Feast is high in phosphorus. I read that foods high in phosphorus should be avoided for cats with kidney/urinary issues. Would food higher in phosphorus be an issue with Charlie’s history of hyperthyroidism and urinary blockage at age 1? Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you so much for your time :)

The phosphorus problem we worry about if the cat is in Chronic Kidney Disease. That's when it's most important to reduce the phosphorus. It shouldn't have any impact on the hyperthyroidism. As for blockages, usually the key to preventing further problems with that is to feed a canned or raw food with as much water added as possible (a lot of us add water to our pate foods to make our own "gravy" which adds extra water into the body). The key to healthy kidneys is keeping as much water flowing through them as possible.

Thank you so much :) I’m learning so much information. I feel bad I have been feeding my cats incorrectly for so long
