    Welcome Stephanie and Squints.
You couldn't have found a better group to join
    Lantus is a good insulin
With all of everyone's help and advice my Tyler is in remission today

As for the lantus, most of us buy it from Marks Marine in Canada ,so much cheaper
Your vet will just have to send over a script and after that you will not need another one.

I will give you the info below

As for the food most of us feed Fancy Feast Classic Pate they are under 2 or 3 % carbs.
    No need for prescription food.
Just tell your vet he won't eat it.
Here is the food chart for you to look at below

    • when you get a chance ,It would be helpful if you can set up your signature so we don't have to ask you the same questions over again. Members will look at this first . Members would have to look up your previous posts to see what insulin you are using
    • It appears after each post in gray, look at mine,

    • On the left, under Settings, Click on Signature. This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback.
      • There is a limit of two lines which may include two links; you may separate pieces with commas, dashes, | etc. This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
      • Add any other text, such as
      • Caregiver & kitty's name (optional)
      • DX: Date
      • Name of Insulin
      • Name of your meter
      • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
      • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
      • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
      • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
      • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
      • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

tap on your avatar where it says your name ,then hit profile page ,tap on that ,then go up to the very top, upper right hand side and tap on your name ,it will bring down a drop box, tap on signature, the signature will be under settings, tap on the signature then and you can start to add what I posted above, make sure you hit save ,
Welcome to the best place you could ever be and an awesome group of people
You can also add where you live in your profile, not your signature

This is at the bottom of every ones post in gray

Here is the link for Canada with the pens we use them like a vial because with the pens you can only increase or decrease by whole units, so you would just take your syringe and stick it in the little grey rubber stopper and just draw the insulin from that

Lantus Solostar Cartridges 5x3ml per box (temp. gauge. ice pack, express-air mail) Brand 100u/ml 15 ml $159.99 USD

[IMG] Lantus VIAL Insulin (10ml per vial) (temp. gauge. ice pack, express-air mail) Brand 100u/ml 10 ml $110.99 USD

Like I said you are better off buying the 5 pack of pens
They will last you way over a year depending on how many units you give
After your vet writes the first script you won't ever need another script.
Call them and will tell you what to do
    They are very nice people

Oh when you buy the pens they will have an expiration date on them
Most likely 2022 or 2023 by now.
Put them in the frig , a middle shelf
As long as you don't puncture them they will be good until the expiration date
So you are actually saving a ton of money

We also use syringes with half unit markings.
We increase or decrease by 0.25 units at a time.
It makes it easier using the half unit syringessyringes
For Lantus you will be using U-100 syringes
Have your vet write the script for the 5 pack of pens

Stephanie are you home testing yet?
It's the only way to keep Squints safe.
We have a spresfsh we all use to record our cats BG to see how the insulin is working and how low it's taking them and when

You can take a look at mine or anyone's ,it's at the end of the signatures.
    Mine says Tyler's spreadsheet

If you aren't home testing we can help you with that and what kind of meter to buy and other supplies.

I will give you the link for setting up the spreadsheet and it explains how it works.
If you have trouble setting it up let us know, we have a wonderful member who will help you if you want to set it up

I'm from Bergen County also like Janet

You should also have these in the house if Squints ever drops too low and you need to bring her BG up. Also have honey or Karo in the house
    Such as

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Beef Feast in Gravy 20% High Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Chicken Feast in Gravy. 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Turkey Feast in Gravy. 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Chicken and Beef Feast in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

It's mostly the gravy that has the higher carbs in it, but you also can feed the food

    Welcome to FDMB!!

Diane has provided links with a ton of information! Let me try to help you prioritize.

We are huge advocates for home testing. Testing Squirts' blood glucose (BG) will give you a huge amount of control over his progress to say nothing of ensuring that he's in safe numbers. Likewise, putting some brief information in your signature will prevent us from asking you the same questions on a daily basis. The instructions for setting this all up are in this post on helping us to help you. The link has some other information you may find helpful.

The information on food is important. However, I would not suggest making any changes in Squirts' diet until you start home testing. If you change your kitty's diet, it can have a dramatic effect on his BG numbers. If you're not testing, you won't have any idea if his numbers are dropping into a lower than desirable range.

If you haven't had a chance to do a lot of reading about Lantus, there are a series of sticky notes at the top of the Lantus/Basaglar/Levemis board that you are likely to find helpful.
