I had a thorough examination of Simba’s teeth last night and he was kind enough to let me “brush” them with a small damp piece of gauze. I noticed a visible amount of plaque on the teeth further back in his mouth and now I’m beginning to think he’s due for a dental clean-up! o_O On Thursday I’ll ask the vet about the ins and outs of it but I’d like to hear experience from anyone who’s had their sugar cats teeth cleaned. Does it raise BG levels? Will I have to give him pain medicine/antibiotics? Is it something that’s done under general anesthetic or sedation? I’m ashamed to say none of our cats have ever had their teeth cleaned...

Besides that, I hope everyone has a great day. :cat:

You know, I hear everyone talking about dentals, I never had a cat have one done in 30+ years of caring for cats! Last time I was in the vet, I decided it must be because I was a bad mum....so I aked the vet if he needed one, and she said he was fine ! I wonder if it is something like dentistry for humans, that in other countries I always needed things, and in the Uk I am always fine... In other words a variation in standards! :woot:

    Happy day 7 Simba!

I’m starting to wonder about that too! Knock on wood, but none of our 3 cats have ever *needed* a dental. I’ve just read lots about how it affects BG and now I’m paranoid that ignoring the condition of Simba’s teeth I could sabotage his current BG levels and end up starting from square one. :nailbiting: I’ll see what our vet thinks on Thursday, but meanwhile I’ll keep “brushing” his teeth.

Usually untreated dental issues can raise BG. That is one thing that can knock a cat out of remission. Treating can bring numbers down.

    Happy Halfway Day :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Good luck with whatever you decide for dental (I'm not versed enough to offer advice though both my kitties are going info dental this month and I'm hoping dental will help Jax's BG or at least rule it out as an issue) :bighug:

I hope dental goes well for both kitties! :bighug: I'll keep an eye out for if/when you post about the experience. I am pile of nerves just thinking about Simba going in for any procedure!

I got dentals done on both Bandit and my civvie, Budge in October. For the first time in 12.5 years. It is under general anaesthesia. The vet didn't take any x-rays (which seems to be more of a routine practice in the US) and she said their teeth looked okay and only needed scaling. The dental did knock Bandit's numbers off for a bit. I'm glad I got it done since they had a lot of tartar. I too was really really nervous about the GA bit especially considering their age.

You may want to shop around for a good vet who will give you a correct picture of whether Simba needs a dental or not.

Hi Lina I posted the same question lol
You know Tyler's in remission since 1-24.
I also looked at his teeth, and see some plaque and red gums. I'm going to bring him to my vet and see what she thinks. What a time I had trying to get a good look at them. He started to bite. I'm also afraid his numbers might go up, same questions you have. I also have to admit I never took him for a cleaning, he's 12 .
I try to also rub them with gauze or a cotton cloth.
    I'll keep you informed .
    Happy day 7

I'll ask our vet on Thursday! See if one's absolutely necessary right this moment. And get an opinion from like 5 other vets too. :D Reckon Simba's numbers would come down any further?

Ohh, Tyler is a feisty one! I just opened up Simba's mouth and had a big look. Scraped some bits off. He's such a gentle giant and I'm very lucky for it! For now it's the gauze-clean for us too, I will look into getting a little finger brush. Keep us posted! And have a lovely day. :cat:

And by "this month", I meant February lol. I have no idea what day it is most days :p But I'll let you know how it goes for sure! My boys are old men (15.5) but they will do just fine!
