Let me pre-face with WOW I'm already getting excited about Lantus. We just switched from ProZinc where we battled some insulin resistance and then some extreme pendulum swings. Switched because of the gentle nature of Lantus. So Marley is supposed to get his shot and I'm stalling. Last ate 2 1/2 hours ago. I have read the dosing methods (will update my signature once I post) and I know it recommends initially not shooting for the first time under 200, but with me switching from a different insulin and a history of failed dose reductions/poor time with not shooting, would this still be the case? Or should I give a token dose? I know the point is to shoot low to stay low, so I would be happy to shoot a token dose and I'm around all day to monitor, but I wanted to get your input. I'll be testing again in 20 minutes, but in case he doesn't come up, I wanted this to be posted.
Let's see where he is after the stall. He is higher than he was at +8. You are new to Lantus and don't have enough data on Lantus. However, you aren't new to testing and low numbers, so if you can monitor, you can give the whole dose. Btw, your signature still says Prozinc! Previous post: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/stalling-please-help.243477/
That advice is for cats new to diabetes. It sounds like you know how to handle low numbers. As long as you do and have supplies such as mc, hc, lots of test strips and can monitor as long as necessary you can shoot. I can’t stay with you though. Are you going to follow SLGS or TR?
Odd. It doesn't on my screen. I updated it immediately after I posted this. You may have clicked on my post within seconds of it going up lol. Does it still say that? Thanks for your response!
I will be doing TR. I have a plethora of test strips (just accidentally ordered 400), I have Karo, and I can monitor frequently. How often? Every hour or would you recommend even more frequently?
Thanks! I guess I have to be real quick on this board lol. I literally updated it within 30 seconds of posting and you already called me out! haha. I'm used to the ProZinc board taking a little longer. Good to know. It's hard for me to keep updating it and remembering.
LOL. Yes. Too much traffic here, which is why we go on and on about posting as per our guidelines. Signature, thread title, linking the previous post etc etc. Makes it easier for us to respond. In case you haven't seen them POSTING GUIDELINES PLEASE READ
I have Dr. Elsey salmon kibble. Would it be good to add some of that with his food to try and keep him "surfing" and not bounce?
With TR, you don't feed kibble. Only LC canned or freeze dried treats. Bouncing is a reaction to them going into numbers lower than they are used to. The only thing that gets bouncing to stop is for them to get used to lower numbers. https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB...tion-of-bouncing-that-helped-gussie-i.184405/ If you've shot, can you change your thread title to say "2/27 Marley AMPS 167". So people know you are no longer stalling and waiting for input
So how do ya'll handle the little bit of air that is in the syringe when drawing? I've read the stickies and don't see it mentioned there, but could have missed it. Anytime I draw, I always get an air bubble near the plunger or near the syringe because of the air in the needle. No matter if I pull fast or draw slow, there's air. What do ya'll do? Also, I have LC and HC food, but no MC. MC would be 10-14.99% based on the food chart I assume, yes?
Yup Yes. You almost always get them. Flick the syringe with your finger, with the needle side up, and try and get the air bubbles to the bottom of the needle and squeeze them out. Have you seen the video here: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB...info-proper-handling-drawing-fine-dosing.151/ Sometimes the air bubbles can be a real pain to get out.
I have but the bubbles always seem to stick to the side and in the little crevice where the plunger would stop . I'll just have to try flicking harder. Thanks!
I didn’t properly welcome you but wanted to get a quick answer. We try and respond fast because some people react too quickly, lol. We don’t always succeed.
Just a little update. So far so good! I'm a little surprised how long he's been riding this flatline. I know the numbers aren't ideal, but I'm happy.
I'm lucky to have such a cooperative boy. He has gotten to the point where he doesn't even stop purring if I'm testing. Sometimes he'll do ear flicks that can be frustrating, but I can't be mad. He's a good patient.
You can test to collect data, but I think he will probably keep going higher. So you can take a break and test less this cycle. Save the pokes and strips for a more active cycle.
My job is analyzing data and I work with data every day, so it's comforting lol. Well he proved you wrong! He's heading down and staying in a great range for him. I'm happy.
You have no idea how excited I am about this. We've been struggling for 8 months and he finally had a wonderful cycle and I see his old self shining through. He's been carrying around his particular, favorite fuzzy ball and meowing incessantly. He's very happy.
He had one bout of pancreatitis about a year prior and vet thinks he may have slowly becoming diabetic for a while and that attributed to his prior medical problems. Why they didn't determine that from frequent blood tests, idk. Perhaps if he had high glucose levels, they attributed it to him being stressed at the vet (they always had to use gloves) and he never showed clinical signs until it was really bad. Ever since diagnosis, he's had pancreatitis a few times and DKA once.
Similar with Max. His bg was slightly elevated with annual labs. After a few years of pancreatitis I though he was starting with CKD but saw lots of cats on the pancreatitis board became diabetic so I bought strips and checked his urine. He never had glucose in his labs and when it registers at home he was at my vet the next day.
Ya she said in hindsight, he could have been creeping up there, but never caught. So he's due for his shot now. And he's back to this morning's numbers of 164. Do I bother stalling or should I go ahead and shoot full dose?
It’s safe to shoot but I can’t predict if he will drop. Can you set an alarm if it looks necessary? I would hate to see you skip after this progress. He’s not dropping.
I'm up playing games, so I can stay up if necessary, but I plan to sleep in 3 hours. But if I see him dropping, I can stay up
You know, as soon as I sent that message, I thought "I've said it so he's going to go the other way!". Great numbers. He obviously likes Lantus.
I'm happy he did. I'm so used to him bouncing, so today I just kept saying "I can't believe how good today is." He's VERY happy. He's riding this wave and feeling good lol.
