I took a sample of Spooks stool to the vet yesterday. He called me this afternoon & told me that he is positive for GIARDIA CYSTS & he also wants to treat Panzer. I'm assuming it's contagious & that's why he wants Panzer treated as well? I also got a box of Cerenia for each of them,so we are back to Cerenia & antibiotics again! The antibiotic is Metronidazole (Flagy) 250mg give 1/4 tablet by mouth every 12hrs until gone. There are 4 pills in each of there bottles. I hope this okay for them to take? I don't have much of a choice. These poor boys need a break. I didn't cancel the appointment for the 24th. Now that they are both on an antibiotic it's pointless to do bloodwork or even a urinalysis, but it's hard to get in so I'm keeping the appointment just incase. I have been giving Panzer a fat 0.5 units of his insulin (on 5-15 PMPS SHOT) to try & bring his #s down some. It's actually probably. 75units, I don't know, it's so hard to measure a small dose with the U-100 syringes. It's seems to be keeping him under 200 now,so that is good. I'm am so overwhelmed & scared for my boys, praying for them to get better! https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/thr...stions-156-3-104-4-125-7.263137/#post-2948700

Yes. metronidazole is okay to give and, as you said, you don’t have a choice. Giardia is a protozoa. It could be spread through the litter box so it’s better to be safe and treat Panzer too, as your vet says. I wonder how he got it? Does he go outside? Eat something weird that could have been contaminated? Drink contaminated water from outside? They’re indoor only, right? Just so odd. I’m glad you took in the sample.

I'm glad I did too. Yes they are strictly inside cats. He doesn't even try to go out like Mr Panzer trys. They have such different personalities. There's nothing for them to get into. They don't drink water that I see, the bowl never looks touched. I set up there new water fountain last night & so far I've seen both of them put there paws in there & that's it. The only water consumption they get is in there wet food every 4hrs & thats because I put 2 tablespoons in each bowl & then mix there food in.

Panzer won't even notice he will be glad to have pill pockets again. Spook on the other hand is hard to pill. When I gave him his cerenia @ AMPS feeding, he didn't want to eat. After Panzer was done I let him out of the cat room grabbed the parmesan cheese & kept coaxing him to eat. He ate all but a 4th of it. The next feeding will be the metronidazole, I'm going to put it in a pill pocket & drop it in Spooks mouth, maybe that will help with the taste.

I got one in the fridge & one in the food cabinet :cat: I just hope it keeps working for him. I'm assuming this new med it's ok to put the Mirataz on his ear. I put some on his ear @+1 PMPS??

You should not have any problems giving both the Mirt and the Metro. I have not read any drug interaction precautions, but you can always call your vet.

That medication smells awful and tastes worse I have read. If you touch it and the pill pocket has the smell they may refuse pill pockets forever. That happened to one of mine with Pepcid which is better. Do you have gel caps on hand? It’s a safe medication short term. :bighug:

Panzer is a treat freak he ate it in a pill pocket no problem, he even watches me put pills in them, he's something else:smuggrin: Spook on other hand wants nothing to do with pill pockets. I gave him his in a pill pocket this time & he took it well & they both cleaned there bowls. Hopefully it will be that easy everytime :cat: Hopefully this is the cause of Spook being sick & they will both get better so we can recheck there high kidney #s & they will have gone down because they are well. Lots of prayers for my boys needed :bighug::bighug::bighug:

What about rolling pill pocket in Parmesan? I would only worry about turning him off of the Parmesan which now works as an appetite stimulant. I always give Metro using a pill shooter to the back of the throat (so they swallow and can’t taste it) and follow it up with treats right away. The pills I am given by the vet are a large size/shape too large to fit into a gelcap.

I cut the metronidazole and used a couple gel capsules. Max and Tiffany were on a small dose.

I don't think it would work, when he sees Panzer eating his pill pockets out of my hand, he runs because he knows what's coming Lol...he's very smart when I used to feed them in there plastic 2 sided cat dishes, I put the blue bowl down in front t of him & gave Panzer the green. He looked at me like what the heck ,I swapped the bowls & he started eating. I know they say cats are color blind but it was like he knew that the green bowl was his! He ate that meal with no parmesan. I'm pretty sure the beef is his favorite gotta rotate for Mr Panzer though. Yesterday he hated the chopped grill, today he ate it no problem...crazy cats!

The ones they gave me for them are a small round pill that I have to cut into 4 pieces & give them a fourth each every 12hrs. My pill cutter is not that greatest, there next dose is going to be 2 small pieces for Panzer & 1 piece for Spook. I wish there was something that would cut it in to 4 equal pieces. A capsule would probably work for Spook though. I'm definitely going to check into them. Do you get them from Amazon? I would also like to get some calibers for small doses of insulin for Panzer.

Not sure why Panzer's #s are so high tonight, it's almost like I missed, wasn't a fur shot but I was distracted by Spook not wanting to eat after the nightmare with the Cerenia feeding. He has eaten all of his next 2 meals though.

I do buy my gelatin capsules from Amazon. The trick is getting the right size for the pills. I’ve heard several people say they bought calipers from Harbor Freight.

These poor kitties! Very odd, I know giardia is in our waterways here but they're indoor cats.

Hmm last I had metronidazole it was a liquid, vet did warn me about the taste. I guess "thankfully" he felt so poorly at the time he didn't even fight it, poor kitty.

They gave me pill form because Panzer is impossible to give liquid to. I'm going to see about having the water tested. Until then I'm going to buy some drinking water from the store.

It is. They are doing okay Spook still has to have Mirataz on his ear to eat. I accidentally gave them cerenia twice yesterday & realized it @ +8 PMPS feeding. They are fine though. I've been reading up on the giardiasis & it's possible I could have it as well. Panzer sleeps right beside my head, & I scoop there litter boxes of course. Also it can live on surfaces for quite some time, so I have to mix up some bleach water & clean surfaces, floors, & there litter boxes which are actually small totes. I was going to buy new but I want to make sure it's gone before I do that. Lots of cat blankets & bedding getting washed too. Panzer's #s are sky high as well & the metronidazole can cause a rise in blood sugar so I'm assuming that's why. I was following the Merlin overdose, you did a great job helping him stay up!

Yeah. I didn’t want to bring up the giardiasis stuff on that first day because I didn’t want to overwhelm you. It’s a lot. Yep, you can have it, too I am not saying that you do, but it’s possible. It’s the absolute worst scenario having to clean everything all at once like that.

I hope Spook will eat without Mirataz soon.

I just put in call to my doctor, they are going to have her call me back so I can get details & a stool kit. I hope he does too. Hopefully this is the reason behind him being sick. Yes it's alot, just not sure when to start doing it. Should I wait until there almost done with the meds or start now?

That's what I was thinking maybe do all of the cleaning the last day of there antibiotic. Well I'm going to go ahead & wash my bedding & several cat blankets I have placed for them to lay on throughout the house & rewash on the last day.

I talked to my doctor & she said if I start showing symptoms to call her back. Which is total bs I think. She said to just wash my hands alot which I already do that.

Well I started having diarrhea & stomach pain after the doctors office closed, so I will be calling them in the morning. I thought I had given them cerenia twice yesterday but I didn't. What I did do today is messed up on there metronidazole. I forgot to give it to them this morning. I think I'm losing my mind!

It’s okay about the Metronidazole. Just pick up where you left off and give their evening dose. I’m sorry about your GI problems.

They eat there last meal in 30mins, I will see where he's at # wise then. Then they eat again @ shot time in 4hrs & 30mins. That is a pretty big drop from 300.
