This question is only sort of diabetes related. My non diabetic cat started to have diarrhea and vomited a couple of times two nights ago and again this morning. She seemed to be holding down small amounts of food and water today and has not thrown up since 5am and its 7pm here now. However my diabetic cat just had diarrhea and threw up. They both are up to date on their shots, they do eat the same food. Does anyone have any advice or ideas on what I can do, I will definitely get them into the Veterinarian tomorrow. I was going to take the non diabetic in today but she seemed to be a bit better so I decided I would re assess the situation tomorrow. I am so very worried, they are both indoors, there has been nothing I can think of that they could have gotten into. I also do need to give my diabetic cat hos insulin and am now concerned about that as well.

It sounds as if your diabetic kitty has caught what your other kitty had. Fortunately it sounds like she is on the mend.
Hopefully Jasper will do the same. Do you have any cerenia or Ondansetron you could give Jasper?
    Try and encourage fluids.
If Jasper can’t keep any food down you should be able to give him a half dose of insulin.
When cats are fasting for surgery, they are given a half dose of insulin.
If the BG did drop low, although it shouldn’t, you could always rub honey or Karo on his gums.

@Bron and Sheba (GA) Ok, he did throw up again just now after eating some food at about 7. I do have some Cerenia actually so I will give him some of that and will also do a half dose tonight and closely monitor.

It's not that unusual for cats to pass a GI bug back and forth in a multi-cat household. I tend to keep a probiotic (S. boulardii) on hand in case of diarrhea. If you've got Cerenia, that can help with vomiting/nausea. It's always stressful when our kitties are sick!! (Just think, it's good preparation for when you have your baby!!)

@Sienne and Gabby (GA) they are both eating this morning! It was a long night, I really only got Jasper to eat a few bites. I will test for keytones this morning when I can. I will definitely get another perscription for Cerenia and get some probiotics as well. Thank you so much for your guidance. I was pretty distraught at first but feel relieved they are eating some, hopefully what they are eating will stay down. @Bron and Sheba (GA) Would you suggest a half dose again at shot time today just to be safe? Should I check in with his AMPS numbers? shot time is in about 45 minutes.

@Sienne and Gabby (GA) thank you for asking, they are eating a small ammount of chicken, Hazel threw up a few times last night, Jasper seemed to feel a little better as the night progressed and was grooming and cuddling last night, Hazel joined in cuddling early this morning. Jasper's blood glucose when I checked this morning a little over an hour ago was 225, shot time is in about an hour and I have a call in to the vet to have them seen, hopefully today, tomorrow if not and I am going to try to get more Cerenia today either way because I am out.

I think a vet visit is a good idea. If nothing else, your vet should know if there's some GI bug that's going around. Frequent vomiting is not typical of cats and they do need to eat.

Also, keep in mind that if they are not holding down food, they may throw up a pill. Both Cerenia and ondansatron come in an injectable form. Your vet is likely to have Cerenia in that form. (You can get ondansatron/Zofran at a pharmacy as it's a human medication. The shot stings like hell, though.) Cerenia and ondansatron can be given together -- they work differently and complement one another.

@Sienne and Gabby (GA) yes I agree it will help to know if she has any idea what we are dealing with here. We have been fortunate to get the pill in so far without Jasper throwing it up yet but I was worried he might last night. I will ask about my options with that and I am hoping to get some for both of them. I will also look for Zofran while I am out today.

@Sienne and Gabby (GA) oh ok thank you for the clarification, they have a vet appointment this evening, I'm so glad I could get them in. I willask about it.so far no one has thrown up today and they both are eating a good ammount. Do you know anything by any chance about giving cats Metamucil ( the unflavored kind.) The Veterinarian Specialist I took Jasper to once reccomended that for his diarrhea and I was thinking maybe I should also do that, I will ask the vet too.

I have had a vet recommend Metamucil years ago too. Lately I've found the S. boullardi really effective. Dosing information is here. You have to scroll down a bit.

Good luck at the vet's today.

It's a probiotic, lots of places have probiotics that contain it. In the US, Jarrow brand makes a version with MOS. Florastor is another brand. Might check the shelves of human pharmacies, either probiotic or diarrhea treatment sections. Or on line.

Also any vitamin/supplement shop if you have them nearby. I've also found it in my regular grocery store.

@Bron and Sheba (GA) they are doing better, we are at the vet, they are likely going to give us more Cerenia ad antibiotics and are running blood work now. Jasper has not thrown up since 8pm yesterday, Hazel since 3am this morning. I am relieved to be here.

@Wendy&Neko the vet is likely going to give us antibiotics for both and mentioned probiotics as well.

I've never used Metamucil with my cats. I've always used a probiotic. Jarrow's is a good brand as is ReNew -- they make a good general probiotic and also has S. boulardii. Personally, I think S. boulardii is magically effective both for cats and humans.
