    Hi everyone,

It's been a little since I posted - sorry to be away for so long! Bear's numbers have started to get really high again. He's up to 1 unit 2x a day now, hoping that helps. I also noticed him breathing funny/wheezing on Friday so took him in to the ER vet. They did Xrays and he was diagnosed with feline asthma. Poor guy just can't seem to catch a break. He is still pottying outside of the box at home sometimes (but only on carpeted area). He is still happy and screaming for food lol. Not sure if anyone has any thoughts or advice.

UPDATE: he is still dropping lower after the new dose change. I know with TR I can shoot anything above 50, but should I do it at the new increase dose of 1 unit or drop him down since he’s so low again?

Did you shoot? Where was he at PMPS? Can you get a couple of tests if you shoot?
Lantus is very good at giving flat cycles when you shoot low.

No I stalled. He is only 15 minutes past his shot time. And yes, I can get some tests. I was going to set the first alarm for +2, do you think that makes sense?

Since you've shot green, why not start with a +1? Don't fill him up at dinner. Feed a little at +1 and +2.

Hi Meredith, good to hear from you again. So sorry about the asthma diagnosis. Poor little Bear.
I have not done much research on this myself, maybe others can give an educated opinion on this.
Background: Kitkat has bad lungs and wheezy since we got him, although it is not fully ashma. A few years back the vet recommended a few things..
litter- try to avoid highly scented litter, also should be dust free as it can be a lung irritant. I switched to the natural crushed walnut shell (no scent, dustfree) and he seems to take to it better than previous brands.
home air fresheners- avoid (especially aerosol sprays). (I was crazy for the febreeze sprays and fabric fresheners) We now use small dishes of Apple Cider Vinegar over our heat vents and near furnace cold air intake, and it keeps the house fresh. (I'm guessing being in Colorado you also have forced air heating, maybe)
Hope Bear's numbers come good for you again soon. :bighug:

Hi there! Thank you for this info! We do have some scent plug-ins and stuff so I will try to take those out or keep them only in rooms where he doesn't go. I am also going to try the respiratory litter from Dr. Elsey's next.

Yes, my vet recommended dropping him back down. She thinks he rose because of the asthma complications and wants to see how he does with .75 now that he’s on medication. She’s worried that he might hypo on the 1u once he starts to feel better.

    Hi Diane,

Yeah. I feel a bit conflicted because my vet told me not to increase for another few days, but of course I’m thinking I should increase. I don’t want to go against her advice so I’m feeling a little confused. Not sure if anyone has any suggestions on if I should increase regardless? She’s concerned the Asthma flare-up spiked his BG and wanted to wait and see if he comes down naturally once he starts to feel better.

Maybe you can post and say what med Bear is on for the asthma and see if they ever heard of it

I’ll do a post tonight. Bear also had an upset stomach this morning. Just feeling a bit defeated with all of his health issues now and his BG rising again.

I know have you looked up any of the side effects of that med

The most common side effects include central nervous system stimulation (excitement) and stomach or intestinal irritation such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Other side effects include sleeplessness, increased drinking, eating, and urinating. Severe toxic effects can occur but are rare.
    Also
    Gastrointestinal upset

Yes, and upset stomach is one of them, so I’m guessing it’s because of that.

He had labored breathing and he had attacks one time. He’s doing better on the medicine.

This thread looks really helpful. I’ll pull it up on my computer tonight and read it through fully.

Thank you for always looking out for us :cat:

That's because I love that cutie pie!
    I put
Theophylline in the search section up top and saw/some posts about, they were older one
When you do post I would put in the title
?? Anyone use theophylline for asthma
Then tell them what you took Bear to the ER and his symptoms
