I didn't get chance to post yesterday, but Simon surfed most of the day in the blues and he is looking good this morning. Still needs encouragement to eat all his food, but he is doing so much better with it. Yay! I am continuing to give him fluids every day instead of every few days and that seems to be helping.

Question: Is it ok to keep Simon on a dose of cerenia (tablets) long term? Simon's vet told me that there is more discussion about keeping cats on it for longer than the usual 2 doses on and then wait a bit before the next dose. I would love to avoid another possible hospitalization due to pancreatitis, and was wondering if anyone else has experience with this. Another question is whether it might be a good idea to keep Simon on a low dose of bupe for the same reasons and also for his IBD issues.

Thanks and have a wonderful day. I may not be able to get back on the board until later this evening due to work meetings.

Re: 12/3 Simon AMPS 151 question about cerenia

    Hi Georgia-
I have had Trix on 4mg cerenia every other day since April (under my vet's care and advice), and she is fine. I find that if I discontinue it, I start seeing more frequent "pre breffis spit up" events. I know Tena (of Tena and Curry) has her civvie Sid on it - I'm almost positive Sid takes it daily, but you could double-check with Tena on that. I think they are learning more and more about how cerenia is with cats, and it seems to be a very helpful and positive med...I think it's effects go beyond just treating nausea and vomiting.

I'm glad Simon is feeling better and better!

Just had a talk with my vet yesterday about Cerenia, and she said that Cerenia is now being shown to have pain-control benefits as well.

I've had Blackie on Cerenia for only 4 days, and she seems to do well without it. I seem rare instances of vomiting now that I've got her eating several mini meals each day.

Good luck, and I'm glad to hear that Simon is doing better. :D

    Morning Georgia :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

Excellent WCR! Keep on doing well Simon!

I have read and heard the same about Cerenia, and know there are those her that use it long term. it does seem to make a difference.

Have a great day today. I hope all goes well.

Re: 12/3 Simon AMPS 151 question about cerenia

It sounds like cerenia may definitely have some benefits long term. I'm glad to hear that there are other kitties taking it on a regular basis. Since Simon seems to get these flare-ups of pancreatitis and other stomach issues, I think it might be a good move to keep him on the cerenia. I'll check with vet if she recommends daily or every other day.

Zener took Cerenia 4 mg tablet, 3x per week for over two years, up until he crossed the bridge. The combination of cerenia and twice daily ondansetron was a life saver. If Z had a flare up with his IBD, we would give the 4 mg daily for five days, and usually he was much better after 3 days in a row and we didn't need to go for 5 days. His IBD ultimately became lymphoma and that is what took him, not his FD.

Paws crossed for the best "cocktail" for Simon.

    Anne

Yes, Sidney has been on 4mg daily for 4 months. It's worked wonders for her. My vet was involved in the study done on cats and dosing. She said it's safe to take daily on an ongoing basis. Sid also gets mirtazapine 1mg daily that is compounded. When Sid stared the cerenia her vomiting stopped...the size of her poos decreased and she became more regular. It has some wonderful anti-inflammatory qualities.

Our vet said up to 5 days in a row would be okay. She agreed it is a good idea to keep Cerenia on hand just in case, so now I am a believer as well! Glad to hear Simon is feeling better.
