12/24 Christmas Eve

So, it appears that I have been approved to get a kitten named T Hanks.

I don't know if I'm ready, but I go to see him tomorrow, and maybe bring him home.
I know he looks like J.D. and I have been told by people on this board not to look for a cat that looks the same, but I just couldn't help myself.
I have a really big cage that I can keep him in, in the center of the condo. It has space for a litter box, bed, and left over room for a towel with a food and water bowl. That's what I kept Ginger in for her first two weeks here. Phew! My heart is kind of beating fast.
I just got off the phone with the director of adoptions. We had a long long long phone conversation.
She knows a man that is taking care of two diabetic cats, and one is hard to regulate, and I told her about this sight, and she said she would definitely pass on the link to him.
So, I'm still a little in shock. I was out walking Ginger last night, and my little mind for some reason wandered off and thought of the kitten on a leash and "said" the words, little Henry. Well, I found out that T Hanks does not stand for Tom Hanks, but for Thanks as he was found the day before Thanksgiving during that snow storm we had.

I hope he bonds with me tomorrow. He'll be at a PetsMart about 30 minutes from where I live.

Ginger was purring a lot yesterday. I hope she likes the little tiger, if I bring him home, tomorrow.
I don't know if I'm ready for this..

i wanted another orange kitty, knowing that it might or might not be a great idea. Frodo was only slightly orange when we got him, almost sandy-colored. As he's gotten older, his tail turned into a big fluffy mast like punkin's and his hair darkened to almost punkin's orange color. It's been mixed, but i'm not sorry. Their faces are completely different - frodo's is pointy and punkin's was more round. From the back and side, though, Frodo looks lots like punkin. That's been ok . . . Their personalities are completely different so it's not like there's any mixing them up in my thoughts.

I don't think there is a perfect answer for everyone, just a perfect answer for you. When you see the little sweetheart tomorrow I think you'll know if he can make your heart sing. Somehow I think he will, because you have a big heart and there is room for you to love again.

Oh Dyana, he's BEAUTIFUL! JD would LOVE this! All he wanted was his bean to be happy - yep, T Hanks will make his bean smile.

He is adoreable, Dyana! J.D. was an elegant gentleman cat! i don't think that is going to be the case w/ this little furball. He looks ready to go, go , go!

 

JD wouldn't mind. You have an empty spot in your heart that is JD-shaped. No other kitty can fill it, but another kitty can make their own space in your heart and help fill up that emptiness.

i confess that i cried while we were at the humane society getting the kittens. I don't know that there is a right time, dyana. I waited a year after my last heart-kitty, TC, died (she was a tuxie) and it didn't make it any easier. I just grieved the whole year anyway.

Dyana, I suspect J.D. is pleased, very pleased. After all, who do you think really arranged this wee little cutie pie's appearance! Yes, you'll still cry for J.D. You should. But you'll also smile at this little impish guy's kittenness. Not mutually exclusive.

I have a canvas picture of my heart dog, BudDog, hanging in my living room. When Willy came home, just a month after BudDog crossed, I still cried for the dog that had gone. But I also hugged the dog that was here. And one day, not too long after, I looked at Bud's picture. I cried, but I also simply said, "Thank you Bud. You did good. Thank you for finding Willy for me."

Not only does J.D. look like Michael, but T hanks looks like Martin, (who is Michael's brother playing on the Rainbow Bridge). T hanks is adorable and I know J.D. would approve. You have a lot of love to give to this little guy and he is going to be one lucky fellow. Ginger will enjoy having a little brother.
Thanks for sharing! I hope soon I get strong enough to get Michael a buddy. We both miss Martin sooo much! Until then I will just have to wait.

btw, My Martin had a black patch on his nose. Looking at T hanks was like seeing Martin when he was a kitten.

 

OMG, Dyana! How can you not fall in love with that face?! I think he will make you very happy, and that is what J.D. would want for you. I know you won't forget to give Ginger lots of love and attention while she's getting use to a new little brother. You don't want to lose the progress you've made with her. Best wishes to all three of you!

 

I got Max and Tiffany a month after losing Mandie. I ended up in the emergency with Max the next day. I was crying when I met them like Julie. At the ER I wondered why I did what I did. Mandie was a long haired tuxedo and Tiffany a tortie. They wormed their way into my heart very quickly. I actually didn't pick out either one. I found two I was going to take but they had diarrhea and I said to get them better and I would come back in a week. The tech that helped me with Mandie was going to go with me when my sister called and said I had to come see this ball of fluff, Max. The tech friend picked out Tiffany and before I knew it the other two kittens were not for me. You can't go wrong. I think Mandie sent Max to me and JD sent this kitten to you.

 

This news is making my heart sing. You'll know when it's time - it may or may not be tomorrow, but you've made a big step just thinking about it. JD will always be in your heart and your memories but you have so much more love to give and lil T Hanks sure is a cutie.

 

Oh. My. Goodness. What a bundle of sweetness! J.D would be thrilled that that you want to save another kitty, and he knows this is not a "J.D. Replacement", because no kitty could ever do that. I wouldn't worry about what he looks like....you will know if it is meant to be. I hope it's a Love Connection!!

what a cutie.... I just want to kiss his spot on his leg. I think I have a spot fetish because Shadow has circles on her feet too and I kiss them and she sometimes likes it... and sometimes not.
Listen to your heart tomorrow.... since Ginger is a traveling girl.... maybe she can go with you and give her opinion too.

Having happiness from a new kitten doesn't alleviate your grief over losing J.D. They are different emotions. You will always have a place in your heart for J.D. How could you possibly not? You will never forget him. That doesn't mean that you can't smile and laugh because there is another kitten in the house who will help to ease the grief. You will love them each in their own way.

 

Oh Dear Dyana, How could you resist that sweet little Tuxie face!!! (Please somebody stop me from wanting Mabel! ) Honestly, there is no "right" time to try and fill that J.D.sized hole in your heart- You have here and you have now! To me, this looks like a sign, how else would you just happen to come across this sweet little face? Just as Mariko got the sign from Lucy on the streetcorner where the adoption papers fell out of her purse, I believe you will get a sign if it is meant to be tomorrow. Or maybe not tomorrow, but you will know in your own heart, J.D. will help guide you!

You are not replacing J.D.- no other kitty can fill that hole, and it is absolutely necessary to grieve, how could you not still cry when you had 20 years to love JD! But a heart kitty is like medicine for a broken heart, it can't cure the hurt, but it can help soften it, in the right dose! Please let us know how this plays out tomorrow, Tiger and I are pulling for you and Ginger to love him- Like Amy said, it could be a Love Connection!

I firmly believe that our GA kitties make these decisions for us. Of all the kitties in all the shelters in all the world, this one "speaks to you"....there's a reason for that!

Hoping the meeting goes great tomorrow and Ginger has a new playmate.

He's so adorable. I don't think J.D. will mind at all. My first very special kitty was a tuxedo kitty. Shortly before I lost him to cancer, a tuxedo kitten showed up at my house. They were alike, but they were different in appearance. I don’t think there is anything wrong with getting another tuxedo kitty. It helped me a lot to have another tuxedo kitty to fill my heart when I lost A.J. It helped me to remember A.J., but I could also see that Nak was special in his own way. I hope things go well tomorrow.

If you've got a blanket, or something that smells like Ginger, take it with you for T Hanks to smell - in case you take him home. He can get used to the smell on the ride home. And see if there is something from the shelter that T Hanks has been sleeping on, for Ginger to sniff first, before seeing him.

He is adorable! I can't wait to hear an update.
Whatever you decide today, I will be behind you.
My new cat, Cashmere, looks like Lucy, and that bugged me a little until I actually met her.
But just like you, I couldn't help myself.
She's been with us for 2 weeks now and it's so true that ECID, and I don't confuse them or I don't expect her to be like Lucy.
Besides, what's wrong with being attracted to a cat who wears a similar coat to the one you loved and miss so much wore?

I wasn't entirely sure if I was ready for a new cat either, but I am glad I adopted Cashmere.
Ginger was doing wonderfully making me feel loved and making me smile.
But the new cat has brought excitement (and a little worries) back into my life.

They tried to get me to take two, but I only took one

The baby is so cute. He looks just like J.D. He almost slept on the car ride home. He would look into my eyes, and kept doing the both eye blink, like he was tired, or saying I Love You.

He does have diarrhea and the lady said it was from the wormer medicine.

Ginger touched noses with him, for a while, through the cage, and then a few moments later hissed and the baby backed off. Ginger has mostly be sitting under the Christmas Tree. I gave them both some food next to each other on either side of the cage bars, but only the baby ate. I know he wants to come out and play. You should have seen him at Petsmart, hanging from the door to his cage and swinging back and forth like a monkey, and hanging from the door knob, like he was trying to open the door.

I have taken two pictures of him in the cage so far. I would like to take him, out but I need to be with Ginger for a bit first. It's hard not to play with the kitten, but Ginger comes first.

The other kitten Prim Rose that they tried to get me to take (two for the price of one), didn't play as much and just sat on my purse a lot, and when I decided to only take T Hanks the little female was playing with the ends of my long hair and getting tangled up in it. I felt bad about not taking her, but I just figured Ginger would have a hard enough time with one, let alone two. Ginger was my deciding factor. I can still go back and take Prim Rose, or another kitten? if I decide to. There was a family outside the door waiting to take a look at Prim Rose as I was filling out the paperwork.

My only thought to throw out for your consideration is that two kittens will play together and have similar energy levels. Ginger is older. It's like Gabby and Gizmo. Gabby tolerates Gizmo's antics and all he wants is to rough and tumble with her -- which she wants no part of.

 

awwwww, I'm so glad to hear that you have found a new kitten. That will be a big change from having two older cats!

In the rescue where I volunteer, we tell people to think about the existing cat. Sometimes it is easier for them to accept two kittens that just one. If Ginger wants to just sit around, and T Hanks is pestering her to play, then it might work well to have two kittens to play with each other and leave Ginger alone. On the other hand, she might like having a playmate. I think you'll be able to tell. Take your time though. It's a big change for her to have a kitten around, and she may not be happy at first.

And upon further consideration, I think Sienne and Libby make a good point, two rascal kittens might make good companions as long as they don't gang tackle poor Sweet Ginger, but I am such a softie, I would have taken all of them home with me....

I was afraid that two kittens playing and rough housing would be too much for Ginger.

I let the kitten out of the cage, and he is exploring the living room, kitchen, and Ginger is (was) just kind of watching him. She just did a big hiss, and the kitten goes running back under the Christmas Tree.

The basement door is open and she can go hide down there, although I am kind of trying to guard it, as I don't want the baby to get lost down there. I keep telling Ginger "Good Girl", I don't know if that helps, but she did lift her back to my pet as she passed me.

I tell you one thing, I think that kitten is going to sleep well tonight, and maybe Ginger will go investigate him more then. I intend to keep him in the cage when unsupervised to a couple of weeks.

I can't get the picture to work.
I used to down load them to my camera's program, and then crop and resize them, and then save them as a name so I could find them, and then down load them into Photo Bucket, to get them on this board, but it's now working.

I am going to take Ginger for a walk...

Oh, Dyana - He's beautiful; hoping all continues to go well and he and Ginger become buddies soon!

 

He just had diarrhea again.
Poor guy. Does he need to go to the vet? Can he had FortiFlora?
He just ate some more FF. The lady at the store gave me two 5.5oz cans of what he's been eating and I bought a bag of the Kitten kibble he's been eating, to transition him to whatever I decide to feed him.
Anyone know of a good kitten canned food?

He's back in the cage, and he just ate and is washing his little face. I don't think he weighs more than 3 or 4 pounds. Ginger is sitting next to me as I type and I keep telling her what a pretty girl she is.

I still call her my baby, (after 10+ years, she's still my "Baby Girl"), so I don't think of her as old. Where's the embarrassed smilie?

Our local kitten rescue recommends the Wellness Chicken and Turkey. Wellness also makes a kitten food, but it's essential the same. At our local shelter, we'd occasionally find that the Wellness Kitten was a bit rich for some of the little ones.

Kitten's tummy is probably feeding the effects of the worming meds and food switch. Why don't you call the shelter and see what they say about the vet? He's probably been vetted recently.

 

He is so adorable. Can`t wait to see even more pictures of him. And once Ginger calms down I would love to see pictures of them together.
Older cats seem to adapt to kittens better than other older cats. When I brought Lucy home at about 10 weeks I had 3 other older cats in the house, only my Siamese mix hissed at her but then they adapted to her unless of course she was being ornery and then she got put in her place but they never attacked or try to hurt her.

Dyana.....so thrilled for you, T Hanks, and Ginger!!! I know he will bring many, many smiles to your heart and Ginger will adjust. FWIW, I've always found it's usually easier to bring two in at a time, if possible. They play more together and leave the older cat alone, generally. But you have to be comfortable with whatever you are doing.

I think the meds from the worming shouldn't cause diarrhea. I'd check with a vet. He might have parasites, as well, which do cause smelly diarrhea.

 

I took Ginger out for another walk, and "convinced" her to go to my elderly neighbor's house, where we visited and Ginger felt pretty comfortable. She was sitting next to me on the couch for quite awhile, while I munched on Christmas Cookies Yum.
My neighbor does have a fondness for cats, and I hope she doesn't mind them on the couch...

I left the baby out and about and when we got home, he came out from the kitchen and I believe he was through the little hole that is at the bottom corner of the cabinets between the sink and the dishwasher. I don't want him hiding in there, so I put a crumpled up paper bag in the hole for now.

I did weigh him before I left and he is 3 pounds and 4 ounces.

Poor Ginger. She had a hairball on the carpet (that's where she always deposits them), but DBF put all litter boxes downstairs in the basement, and I had the basement door closed.

When I came home, the little one ran into the kitchen after me, like he was used to being fed, and so I opened a can of FF and put out two bowls, and they both looked at each other, and Ginger hissed.

I took Ginger's bowl (which had Kitten kibble in it) and put it in front of her, and the kitten went to his food, and they ate (looking at each other the whole time) about 7 feet apart.

I guess, I'll try to call the lady I talked to yesterday, about the diarrhea.
The baby has been drinking lots of water at least. I saw him drinking lots of water at the PetsMart and he still is. Puts his paws in it, sometimes.

I am boiling a ham bone to make pea soup, and he was looking up at the pan where the smell was coming from and seemed about the jump up there. I told him "no". I better go.. as the kitchen is unguarded..

 

Congratulations on the new addition Dyana! T Hanks is just a little love! Fingers crossed that intros go smoothly with Ginger. It looks like you were feeding them together, and that's one of the tricks we use when introducing a new foster to the herd. Does the adoption group provide a free vet visit voucher for adopted kitties? I know ours does, and you can take your new pet in to get a basic check up for free at several local vets. Hopefully the diarrhea is just tummy upset from the food changes, etc.

 

Welcome, little T Hanks! You are so cute! Dyana, it sounds like Ginger is making some sort of effort. The kitten may well worm his way into her heart. I've never had a kitten, so can't give any thoughts there, but it sounds like others have good advice. And if one thing doesn't work, you can try another. Good luck with getting the diarrhea under control.

What a cutie! Getting them to eat close together is a good sign! I agree w/ Ella, T Hanks is a great name, knowing the story. You could just call him Hank.

I think the reason you keep getting that image icon is that it has to be the URL for just the jpg. You are putting in the link to the Photobucket page w/ all the extra stuff around it. I could open it in a separate tab using the right click technique, but i don't know how to get to just the image on Photobucket. I could walk you through linking to Picassa photos, but I don't know Photobucket.

Yup.

 

Ginger was at the closed bedroom door, hoping it would open and didn't know that the baby was behind her. He got withing 18 inches and she saw him and hissed. He just layed down and relaxed and let her hiss.

Carolyn (CD and Big Mac) sent me the link to J.D.'s whole 20th Birthday Condo (not just the You Tube, but with all of your posts). I told her that I would change the link in a bit, but in the mean time, I watched the You Tube and tears just bathed my face. As I was watching it, Ginger jumped up into my lap and onto my desk.
Such a mixture of emotions today.

I feel like I am happy about the squirt, monkey, stinkey boy, but feel guilty that I am not thinking about J.D.
at the same time.

I called the rescue group, and they said to feed him the food that he is used to only for the next couple of days or until the diarrhea clears up. If it's not cleared by Tuesday or Wednesday, then take him to the vet.

Swooooon. He is adorable. Kitten lust here. Sounds like T Hanks and Ginger are doing exceptionally well. She will have a lot to teach him and it looks like he's already learning. Love his response to her hiss at the door. Excellent.

Understandable, Dyana. Just keep in mind, "squirt, monkey, stinkey boy" is J.D.s gift to you. He knew what you needed and *waving magic wand* there was little T Hanks. Everytime you smile at the little imp, everytime you feel happy that he's home, J.D. is nodding his head "yes, mama, that's how it should be. You'll always love me. I know that. But you can love Mr. Stinky Pants, too. I approve."

We are thrilled for you and even more thrilled for T Hanks...

I think the kitten may be limping on that front leg with the black spot on it. It's hard to tell because he scampers around, but it looked to me like he was favoring it, and he was holding it up.
Wish us luck at his first vet visit in 25 minutes from now.

Just catching up - this warms my heart to the core! It must be an emotional time for you welcoming T Hanks and still holding J.D. close to your heart. Do not feel guilty. Let the little kitten lighten the load and know J.D. is smiling down on you. HOORAY FOR POO!! Hope vetty visit goes well.

 

He reminds me of J.D. as he looks like him. I was wondering if it does the same thing for Ginger, or if they see beyond coloring.

He had an xray and there was no break, just some soft tissue damage on his middle toe.
He got some Metacam (even though I don't like that) and an anti-inflammatory called Naxcel.

My vet's office was elated that Dyana Keen got a new kitten! and my vet said I made her day, today

I am to keep his activity restricted for a week. Which will be cage restriction while I'm at work and while I'm sleeping. He can come out for some activity in the mornings before work, and the evenings after work.

He was playing with his round plastic dinner plate sized toy with the mouse that goes around and around as he bats it, with Ginger sitting watching him, just 3 feet away.

He sure eats a lot.
He's sleeping now.

 

I'm glad the vetty visit went well. I hope his toe heals quickly.

 

That's a great report from the vetty. Vines for his toe. And Detective Poo is glad to see he had a formed poo. Poor little guy, he's been through a lot the past couple of days. I'm sure he'll be at 100% very soon. He sure fell into a tub of butter, coming home with you, Dyana.

Awesome reports for him and I'm glad it seems Ginger is getting a bit more used to him.

Gracie sprained a foot when I had her less than 24 hours. We had to do the same as you and she healed just fine. Rambunctious kittens.

I firmly believe that our GA kitties sometimes send us another kitty to love. I'm 100% positive my GA Maxie sent me Tobey. I bet JD sent you this little one.

 

Glad to hear nothing serious was wrong w/ his foot. You are such a good mamabean to notice it so quickly.

 

Dyana, this is so wonderful. He is adorable, and I know JD is very proud of himself for finding him for you! I'm glad all went well at the vet. Sounds like a typical little boy - playing too hard!

 

OH MY GOODNESS, DYANA!!!! He's precious and I'm so happy for you (and Ginger!) and little man. Glad to see the betty visit went well...healing vines to his toe! Congratulations, Dyana! I think J.D. would be so happy that you're giving your love to Ginger and a J.D. look-a-like. J.D. always knew he was a handsome cat! Give the little man scritches from me and Shasta and lots of love to Ginger!

 

Dyana, I am so happy for you. He is just the cutest thing ever. Gotta love the kittens! My cat, Cleo (GA) also had some damage on her foot from jumping off my couch when she was a tiny kitten. I guess it happens all the time since they are so much more rambunctious than older cats. I'm glad things seem to be moving in a positive direction with Ginger and the new baby. Slow is good and in no time, they will be buds.

I just want to pick him up out of the screen for cuddles and play - keep the pictures coming you know that we can never get our fill of cuteness around here! Good to hear that Ginger is settling already. Another indication that it was meant to be

Hmmm...I thought I posted but maybe I was just reading the thread and forgot. Congratulations on your precious new little one! I'm so happy for you, and what a sweet face! I hope Ginger will warm up to him soon. Then we can see some pics of them cuddling maybe? I hope his toe is feeling better. It makes my heart happy that he is helping you heal and smile again.
