My 12 year old Siamese got diagnosed almost a year ago. Long story short is that my cat hasn't eaten in three days and is lethargic. When he walks he stumbles around like he's drunk. His blood sugars are high. I forced him to eat a little through syringe and a baby spoon. I think he's dying. I have zero money for vets bills. Cannot do care credit. I live in Tacoma, WA.

I'm not experienced in ketones, but I think your only option would be a vet visit. I'll try to find someone to help you.

You need to get your cat to an emergency vet ASAP, high ketones, no eating, could be DKA and kitty needs attention ASAP!!!

Thank you. I honestly am just trying to keep him comfortable at this point. If someone in my area could take him from me, I would do that if it meant he could live.

I feel terrible for you that you are in this position. Isn't there anyone you know who would help you out? Or ask the hospital if you could work off the bill somehow, helping to clean animal crates or whatever.

Can you get a ketone test? Strips can be purchased at a pharmacy and aren't expensive.

I called the vet and they told me to force feed him. But without money for payment they won't do any tests. I'm even willing to rehome him but no one will take him.

There is nothing that can be done at home, he is probably dehydrated. At least call the animal hospital and ask what you can do for him.

Has he been drinking at all? Call them back and ask if you can pay off the bill with doing whatever they need to be done They will see good faith in you and hopefully help your cat. It's worth a call.....

Many cats with Diabetic ketoacidosis will have a sweet smelling scent to their breath. You can try to see if this is the case. However not all cats will have this, so if you absolutely cannot get your kitty to the vet you need to use a ketodiastix urine dip stick to test for ketones. If it is DKA the only solution is to get to a vet ASAP.

Care credit is a private credit option. You can at least try and see if they approve you. You can find out in minutes on there site if they approve you or not. It is worth a try if nobody lical can assist you.

There's a list of financial aid groups at this link http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/financial-help-links.131190/

Ketone strips are about $10 (or less) at WalMart, but you'll need to get a urine sample to use them

At this point, it's vital that you get food and water into your cat. Use a blender and add food and water and blend it really well so it's a slush. You can get feeding syringes from a vet or from places like PetsMart/PetCo...and some human pharmacies may have syringes that would work in an emergency (which this is)

I'd contact Diabetic Cats In Need....they might have some other ideas for you

Please do as Chris advised and get water and food ...pate style with lots of water to make a slurry...into your poor kitty. Maybe this will make a difference. If you don't have a feeding syringe have to feed small amounts by hand the same way you would pill a cat.

The only thing I can think about: call all the vet clinics in your area, some have some funds for a case like yours. Tell them that you would give up your cat if that would save it's life... maybe that is a way around your financial issues??? At least it is worth a shot!

Please, please, please try to get some food and fluids into your kitty, and go through the Yellow Pages and call every vet in your area, one of them may be willing to help. Apply for any financial help that's available, not all of them are based on your ability to repay or your past credit history. PLEASE do these things, I just can't bear the thought of your poor kitty dying because no one would help. If I was able to, I would help you. Prayers for you and your sweet baby.

DCIN is Diabetic Cats in Need. I am the director. Please contact me at 410-499-3390 via text or voice.

Your cat needs an ER now. He needs fluids, food and maybe meds like bupe and cerenia.

I'm so glad to see this. I hope you'll give us an update on your sweet Ichiro when you know something.

If he's got ketones, you can deal with it if you are very committed. It takes feeding, lots of water, perhaps sub-cutaneous fluids, and learning to hometest. You've got to know what his blood sugar is so you can adjust the dose.

The recipe for ketones is "not enough insulin + not enough food + infection/inflammation or systemic stress." Here is a link to an explanation of ketones and its complications.

Cats typically need their insulin dose adjusted - they don't usually stay at the same amount for long periods of time.

Big hugs to you, and kudos to all the folks stepping up to help you. :bighug:

Please consider donating as ichiro'a circumstances are similar to my Sabrina's dka dx in February of this year. I was financially tapped out (dka in July 2014) & was faced with the decision to fight for her or pts. Dcin was my go to for support & she recovered wonderfully. Unfortunately she crossed over the rainbow bridge on October 10th due to squamous cell carcinoma, tumor under her tongue. I'm trying to pay forward to promote the awesome job DCIN & FDMB do for the love of our kitties. Please consider donating, every $1.00 helps, whether it's realized or not. God Bless you all! I'm glad he's gotten help but I just had a thought. If the cat hasn't been seen by a vet and she wasn't home testing and still giving the Lantus is it possible he is hypo?? I guess in this situation there is no way to know.

Everyone here is amazing. I hope Ichiro recovers quickly!

I just sent a small donation to DCIN. It's not much but as @Bobbie And Bubba says, if everyone who is able to can donate a small amount, maybe that will help cover Ichiro's vet bill. Good luck to Diana and Ichiro!

Just saw an update on Facebook

Unfortunately, Ichiro didn't make it :(

Fly free sweet Ichiro, and land softly....there are many at the bridge to welcome you and keep you company until the one you love most comes to be with you forever cat_wings>o
