I would like to thank everyone for your well wishes for DH.

WEEK ONE: It has been a rather eventful week to say the least. As of today he remains in the ICU, still on a ventilator, but is doing better slowly. The surgery itself went well on Monday. Complications set in however by Tuesday and he has been dealing with those since Wednesday. We have had heart issues, rapid heart rate, and low BP. This began when they started to get him up and moving. When that occurred it also affected his respiration, ability to breathe and oxygenation level, so the ventilator was brought in to keep the lungs operating as they should and needed to be since they did remove one lung lobe. It appears that his heart is extremely sensitive to trauma, which in reality this surgery was. so... it is taking time to get used to things. They are making sure it remains steady while the lung area heals. He is, LOL, not a big fan of the ventilator, had a day where he "removed" (well yanked) out his feed line, meds line, etc. Once he understood what was happening, he left all alone. And the pneumonia is back (it is a known complication for lung surgery), along with a secondary infection, and is on meds to deal with that. They have done a few broncs to remove the "gunk" and done an infusion type lung treatment, daily, to deal with the secretions created by the lungs attempt to deal after surgery. All that is improving. We had an issue with a malfunctioning epidural that is controlling his pain management. We suspect that contributed to some of the complications that developed when they tried to get him up and moving more, as their was little pain management on Tuesday, due to the malfunctioning epidural. It is now been corrected and under control. WOW, alot of side rails going on. As of last night though, the fever was gone, lungs are healthier, and the heart has maintained normal rhythm. He is resting alot, as expected, as he heals. He was more awake yesterday, and in possession of full faculties, and responsive. When talking with the ICU nurse this morning, he had a good night, no events, and things were/are steady. They hope to get the tubes out tomorrow. Paws crossed!

WEEK TWO: This was a trying week, for DH and for family. He had a good start to the week: ventilator was removed, he was on a nose fed O2 line for a day, and was responding well. They elected to move him to intermediate care, and in the long run, that move was too soon. The afternoon that day was full of tests, U/S's, more physical stuff, which proved to be too much too soon, so he was moved back to the ICU. AT that time they elected to sedate him to allow the lungs more resting time, more time to heal. There was another bronchoscopy Friday morning, sent off as the others for analysis. I still haven't heard results on that. His surgeon was by yesterday and let him know that the surgery stuff looks good, and all should be well once his lungs believe that too. so yes, a bump in the road with the return the other morning to the ICU, but that is too be expected. They have elected to leave him on the ventilator, for the rest of today. He is understandable frustrated with it, but knows what must be. They did trial breathe on your own yesterday, which went well. The gases monitored did not change significantly (guess they need too), and in view of that, they have decided to give him time for more recovery there before removing the ventilator. Perhaps today. He is more alert now, sedation has ended, and was awake and "moving" while we were there yesterday. We ended up playing charades in a way. It is hard for him to communicate what he wants when he can't talk due to the ventilator. So... a game of charades for him to let me know he wanted me to bring in the newspapers. ;) Vitals are good, stable. He is in PT now too, to regain strength, and mobility. They had him walk a few steps yesterday. He was ELATED to be out of bed, even if for just a brief spell. All in all, things are improving.

He has an awesome surgeon, who has been by daily to check on him. My hat goes off to the ICU nurses. wow, they are an incredible lot of caring people. Thank you to the ICU at Swedish Memorial Hospital! and thank you L&LL, for being the caring family that you are. Your vines and well wishes are more than appreciated! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I hope everyone has had a great week. We have been.... well, busy again!:joyful::cool: We have made every effort to maintain things as they should be for Nicholas and William, as they don't quite understand all that is going on with grandpa. They are handling the routine adjustments well, but do miss their grandpa too. We have not taken them to the hospital, as the ICU is no place for children, and I honestly believe that seeing him hooked up to all those tubes and machines would really freak them out. So.... not until he is out of ICU. In the meantime, we are back to our normal weekday routine for them, and busy rules once again. As I say every week, I just can't imagine not being on the go. ;) It keeps us out of trouble, and makes for great times! I often think back on the weeks happenings, and wonder how in the world did we do all that! I know I write this every week, but it was the same this past week. We have had a week of adventure, and fun, and crazy as we all deal with pending spring, and somewhat warmer days. And wet days. o_O :) We have been swimming, and to parks, and even made a river trip. It has been a good week... :):)

Normalcy in Three Musketeerville! I wrote alot of this last week, but it still remains true today. The kitties are all doing well, but wow do they ever miss papa bean. Bug is sleeping in his spot on the sofa, Vanessa has taken over his fleece blanket that he uses on the sofa, and Lola is watching all his usual haunts. They are doing OK with it all. I talk with them every day about papa, and assure them that things are OK. As I type this morning, Vanessa is camped out on my lap, purring away. :joyful: I still need to make their appointments for an annual checkup, sometime in March. Vanessa isn't really due until summer, but will take her too, just to do a 6 month follow-up on BW as her kidney values were a little on the high end or normal last go around. I still need to think on how to incorporate some outdoor stuff for them all, a catio. A must do, especially for Lola! she still continues to be an escape artist.:rolleyes::joyful: It is interesting that since DH has been in the hospital that she has cooled her jets so to speak, and not been dodging legs to try and get out. Good girl! I am grateful that they are doing so well.:smuggrin::smuggrin: All in all: Normalcy in MusketeerVille! :cat::cat::cat:

Our adventures continue. It has indeed been a busy week, with all sorts of weather, and temperatures.:rolleyes:;) We were outside when we could, indoors when we couldn't. We made trips to the pools, parks and playgrounds, and a return to the all-time best river trip on our good weather day. Thursday we had an awesome weather day: 65, sunny and not one cloud in the sky. So..... back to the river for the boys. I cannot remember the last time the boys were so excited to be on a river. Well yes I can, it was about three weeks ago when we made our first trip there since fall. With sunny skies and temps at 65 in Gold Bar, we all knew where we wanted to be today: At "Stinky Fish River", aka the Skykomish at Big Eddy, near Gold Bar. It was outstanding there that day. It was awesome that this week weather and conditions have allowed a return trip there, and once again both boys picked up where they left off last fall. They remembered everything, right down to where the under ground creeks were and where they emerged, the best sand banks, the best sitting rocks and the largest and finest tossing stones and sticks. What a wonderful day for them: back to the river! They both we adamant that swim suits were in order. o_O:confused::joyful::joyful::joyful: yes... swim suits! Both boys wanted to go swimming, but soon discovered once again, what "winter rivers" are truly like. Freezing Cold! So they settled for a self made swimming hole. Fun ruled that day. All of us cannot wait until we can get back out to places like the Skykomish. This past week we also spent time at Wilcox Park, and the Mukilteo Lighthouse Park. The parks have been great! It was sunny most afternoons, but still very wet too. I am grateful for boots.:joyful: There is a small creek there at Wilcox, in which Nicholas and William had such fun being boys and playing in it all. We waded through everything. Lots of water, still TONS of MUD in the open field area, lots of sticks and trail adventures. The Lighthouse Park was a new one for them, and they really enjoyed the time spent there. The lighthouse still works, and has been well reserved. The ferry comes and goes from the area too. They both decided it was a great place, and want to go back. What a great week it was. :woot::woot::woot: It has been so fun! It has indeed been a good week for the boys, and their grammie! :joyful:

AWESOME WEEK in the pool! :joyful::smuggrin::) I wrote most of this last week, but it remains true to course. Nicholas and William continue to swim on their designated days, with a joint swim time, Brother's Swim, for them both on Wednesday Afternoons. It is one of my favorite times, as they really do have fun together in the pool. Nicholas has his me and grammie swim night on Friday night, followed by out traditional Friday night burger feast after we play and swim in the pool. Lessons continue to go well for Nicholas. On occasion they have the kids swim the length of the pool, not an easy task for a 5 year old, but he makes it! He is becoming quite the little swimmer. William is beginning to express interest in lessons, so maybe soon for him too, probably in September. Nicholas continues to be out underwater energizer fishie, and I often think he spends as much down below the surface as he does on top. I am beginning to see signs of this in William too, He now asks to jump in unassisted, and tries to swim on his own. He was so excited two weeks ago when he realized that he could stay on top of the water by himself. :joyful: I expect that soon they both will be chasing each other way down under. :) Happy times when that happens.:):):) We all love that joint time. SWIMMING RULES!!! As always, we are grateful for our time in the pool. It has all enabled to boys to explore anther aspect of growing up, one they really enjoy. It has just become the norm for us, we go each week, and just never tire of it. It proves to be such fun for both boys, and their excitement with it all has not wavered.
GO NICHOLAS! GO WILLIAM !! [IMG] [IMG]

For my own personal time, I continue to hike the local trails here when I can: Meadowdale, Picnic Point, Mesika, And the Big Gulch. It is great to have such good places to go to when time permits. Due to DH surgery, I was unable to get out on a hike, but did make do with local trails. I can grateful I can get those in. It has been such a good take care of me time. Once DH is back home, or hospital activities allow, I will try and get a hike in. I am still hoping to get over them thar hills to Eastern Washington for some spring hiking, maybe next week, if not this week. :)

Have a great Sunday everyone! It is rather low-key here... I hope to make it outside on a local hike today, before the rains show up... hit and miss on that one today. Hospital visit this AM to start the day off, once this is posted.

Kitten steps for sure, but it's all still forward progress. Healing does take a frustratingly long time, but he will get there. Prayers continue from us.

Such awesome kitty pictures...Vanessa is stunning, Bug has that sweet "come hither" look, and Lola - what a classic pose!!! Beautiful shots of the boys, too...they are getting so big!!!

I hope you're able to get some rest in among all the activity....

Wow. What a journey for you, DH and the family. So glad to hear that he's interested in the newspapers. He sounds a little spunky and feisty which shows his fighting spirit. Continuing to keep the healing vines directed your way and keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. Extra hugs for you Michelle.

    Lots of love

    Hi Michelle,
We are thinking the best thoughts that this coming week will be when your DH gets rid of the complications and begins to heal steadily. Vines for him!!
Love the pics of the kitties. Lola is being very considerate in not trying to escape while your DH is in the hospital!

How neat that you could get to the lighthouse park with the boys. Daffodils there!!! (here it is snowing and the temperature early this morning was 19 degrees. Now, at 3 p.m. it is 17 degrees!) The wind is fierce. I'm not going out in it because of my cold/sinus thing, but Edward said it was frigid.

Have a really good week ahead.
    Hugs and scritches,

    Ella & Rusty
p.s. to Vanessa: I really need that 10-hour energy espresso!! Thank you, Kitteh Barista!

Good Morning everyone! :coffee::coffee::coffee: I finally have a minute to get back on the Board...

DH update: Ventilator was removed yesterday. His levels were good for the vent breathe trial, gases as they should be, so they took that out, replaced with a respirator. I'm not too sure how long that will be in place, a day or two, until they feel transition to nose fed O2 is OK. They hope too to remove the chest drain tube maybe today. The fluids being generated in the chest cavity has been reduced alot, so if all is normal there today they may take out the drain tubes. YAY! Neck central line, for meds admin, was removed the other night too. Vitals are stable. it has been nice to go into that room and see only few items hanging from the med tree, rather than the five tress, all loaded, that were there at the beginning of the week. He was up in a chair for the morning yesterday. That they are encouraging for as long as he wants to be up. PT will continue today, and some walking too. All in all, more kitten steps, and progress.

@Ann & Maggie11 (GA) , @Vyktors Mum , @Josie & Ripley (GA) , @carfurby , @Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) , @Tena and Curry(GA) , @rhiannon and shadow (GA) , @Amy&TrixieCat Hi everyone! and THX for the visits, vines and kind thoughts. I so appreciate you all checking on us. Things are moving forward after last weeks set back. They know now that he , and his lungs, need time. The rest of him is operating as it should, heart stuff has all improved. Seems his was overly sensitive to the surgery removal of its neighbor. All is well, and should any issues with that remain, it can be dealt with by med(s). Serryn - yupp! he now knows what patience pants are! :) Tena, I know on the newspapers, cracked me up. He didn't get too far with them, but still enjoyed reading what he did do.

THX all too on the kitty pics. It is so nice that they are behaving while DH is in the hospital. Good kitties! Lola had second thoughts yesterday about not trying to escape, but decided in the long run that open window sniffs were ok too. Phew! I didn't have to chase her down. Silly cat. @Vyktors Mum - I think Lola does too. She photographs so well, always comes across with the Cuteness on overload. She LOVES boxes, and I often find her doing things like she is in the photo.

@Ann & Maggie11 (GA) THX on the boys pics. I know... they are getting so big. Where does the time go?

@Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) - I loved the lighthouse park too, such a nice place, easy to get too, and a plus that the boys enjoyed it. We are still managing to get out and have fun, see alot of places, I'm still getting my time, we've just added the element of hospital visits. We've been able to stagger visit times so that someone is there a couple of times a day. and yes - we ahev sun and 60/65/70 degree weather! Go figure.... it should be in the 50's here this time of year. no com plaints! Wow on your snow! and frigid temps. I will send some of our warm. Hope you are feeling better too!

@rhiannon and shadow (GA) - you are so right on the all i need is air. we all take so much fore granted, never really realize until it is so hard to come by.

Have a great day everyone! I hope to visit condos when I get back today. Time now to head on out to the hospital so I can make their morning rounds. Enjoy your day!

(((((((Michelle)))))) I was thinking about you, I briefly looked in on Saturday and did not see a condo but am sure glad to see this one and especially your last update!! I can just imagine how delighted you and DH are to have most of that heavy equipment and machinery removed from his room!!! And am so hoping he will soon be reduced to just a nose tube, but that is great to hear that he is doing so much better than last week. Please know that you are both in my heart and prayers!:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

That is nice of the kitties to hold down the fort while you have had to be out at the hospital, it must be comforting to come home and snuggle with all that kitty love! And Miss Lola, thank you especially for behaving yourself --mamabean has too much on her plate these days! Wonderful pictures of the fur crew and always, wonderful to see the boys and their smiles! This forum and the world at large has been very heavy with grief of late, so I always look to the smiles on the boy's faces for an uplifting feeling--oh to be so young and innocent! :joyful::joyful: Those pictures of Lighthouse Park remind me so much when we used to take our boys and my nephews to the beach every summer! Hope you were able to get out a little and enjoy the nice weekend(until today that is :()

Vanessa, thank you once again for that awesome coffee this morning--Auntie Ruth was up at the Skagit Tulip Festival this weekend, the coffee wasn't even close to as good as yours--you are best kitteh barista ever! :joyful::joyful::joyful:

Good Morning everyone! :coffee::coffee::coffee: Phew, we survived monday! :p

DH UPDATE: it was a good day for him yesterday. They removed the chest drian tube. YAY!! I was present for that, fascinating to watch. I had no idea the insertion length of that tube was 15"!:blackeye: He said it hurt a little when they removed it, but he felt better when it was gone. Guess he could really feel it in there. They had him off the respirator mask for about 5 hours or so yesterday afternoon into the early evening. They had planned to put it back on for the night sleep, O2 levels were good, but on the low side when i left. Probably a good plan to get him get used to having it off. I saw his surgeon last night, amazing the hours that man keeps. He said all was coming along, slowly, but improvement each day. As he said, no one planned on the events and complications of last week, but he expects him to recover well. The pathology on the lobe removed came back great, and in theory, the cancer portion of all this is gone. That was good news. The surgeon was very happy with the pathology report. There never is 100% certainty, but all looks good right now. DH was up in a chair most of the afternoon, with a few walks from chair to bed. They plan on slowly increasing physical activity. A good day yesterday.

@Tiger(GA) and Ruth , @carfurby , @Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) THX to all! :) Things are beginning to look up, a much better start to this week than last. We all know this will take time, as this surfer was a difficult one for him. DH is learning all about patience pants. ;) It was nice to have the mask off yesterday and actually have a voice conversation. he was happy about that, understands too that he a need to alternate between the nose feed and the mask, kitten steps as they say. Wea re grateful fora good pathology report!

@Tiger(GA) and Ruth THX for checking on us. we too are glad that this week is starting out on a good note. YAY! Yupp, I am grateful for those kitties. I get home at night, and all three are there waiting,. Last night I watched a little TV before going to bed, and they were all curled up on and next too my lap. I know they miss having DH home all day. Such good hold down the fort kitties! I so agree on the boys: so full of life, and happy. their smiles make it all so great. YES on lighthouse park, that was fun, and we will be back. it has a little bit of everything, and so close to the house. Who knew? and yupp, I have been able to get out and enjoy the nice weather - i make sure I take some time for me too. it's been local, but out is out. I read that we are due for sun and 75 on TH. YIPPIE!

Morning everyone! :coffee::coffee::coffee: I hope your week is going well. We are doing great! I am off in a few to spend the day with Nicholas, William, and their mom and dad at the Aquarium, Waterfront and the Great Wheel. Mom and dad are on vacation this week so FUN RULES! We have sunny skies and maybe 65/70 today. Yahoo!

DH UPDATE: He had a great day yesterday. He is off the respirator mask, on nasal support, minimal settings, 10% I think. They have elected to have him wear the mask at night, from about 8PM to 6AM, for additional support and recovery time to allow the lungs to continue to heal, and built up that strength reserve. The surgery pretty much took all that away. so... we will spend a few days doing that, until lung support is fully functional. gradually the time at night on the mask will be cut back. Drain tube is out, Feed tube was disconnected for a few, and they have reintroduced liquids, Swallow eval was done, he has passed that. So, the feed tube will be phased out slowly too. He worked with PT and OT yesterday, has exercises to do to regain arm strength and lung strength. They had him up and walking, with the aid of a walker, a coupe of time yesterday, longer trips around the hospital floor. so... things are starting to get much better. What a two wees it has been. Ina few days they may move him tot he intermediate care floor of the ICU. YAY! Kitten steps are good. :)

@Tena and Curry(GA) , @Amy&TrixieCat Thanks Tena and Amy. Things are starting to get better. We so hope trend continues. It looks like this time it may. He is starting to learn the art of patience....

Sounds like giant kitten steps forward for DH.:bighug::bighug: It's great to hear he's less connected to all those tubes and devices. Especially the feeding tube! :woot: Vanessa will be able to make the rounds shortly.

I hope you had fun today, the sun was a little later getting to our part of the world so we didn't get quite as warm. Sounds like a great family outing day.

Morning everyone! WOW, and thanks for all the visits! Time escapes me, so sorry I am so behind on condos....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: Vanessa, more :coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee:, Please!

DH UPDATE: wow, lots of kitten steps yesterday. :) He is on minimal nasal O2 support, little o2 required. They are still having him do the mask at night, but only for a few hours. Not fun for him, but he understands too the need. They just want to build up that reserve, so that in the event any back-steps he can handle them better. OT has been in, as well as PT. Yesterday he walked the perimeter of the floor, with an aid of a walker. Made it too. His step is better, more walk than shuffle. That was good to see. When done with his walk his o2 level remained in the upper 90's, which is awesome, respiration rate remain steady too. She also had him do several sit and rise from a chair with no support. He did those well. Feed tube came out yesterday, and he is on a soft mostly liquid diet: broth, jello, juices and Popsicles. That went well, as did his swallow eval. So.... talk is that maybe today he can exit the ICU for intermediate care. His DRs are pleased, as it seems he had passed "that mark" of worry. X-rays show that the lungs continue to heal. All is going well. Now we work on being strong enough to go home. No clue on how long that will be. He is in no rush, as he does not want t have to go back. ;)

@Anne & Zener GA , @Wendy&Neko , @Tiger(GA) and Ruth , @Shoeskitty , @Sienne and Gabby (GA) , @Tricia & Cinco & Harvey , @carfurby , @Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) , @Melissa & Tarragon , @Amy&TrixieCat THANK YOU ALL for thinking of us, for being positive and all those vines. As all goes in LL, they are working. He seems to have crossed that hurdle of worry where will he ever be able to come home. Things have improved significantly in the past couple of days. as wall here know, those patience pants do work, and now all there know it too. He has learned there is a reason for slow and steady. Tat tortoise does win the race. Prognosis is GOOD, as is pathology for the cancer report of all of this. We are optimistic. It is nice to truly be able to say that. When we were there yesterday, all he had connected was the saline line, O2 line and heart/respirator monitors. WOOT!

@Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) Just had to let you know: Road ID ordered, and on its way. Thanks for keeping on top of me to get one! :joyful: YUPP, we are all enjoying our 70 weather. Aquarium and waterfront yesterday, tulip festival and the beach today. :woot::joyful::woot::joyful:

@Wendy&Neko we are! how wonderful to have the temps be in the 70-75 range, and so sunny! I hope it will be the same for you.

Thank you, so much, Michelle, for the updates on your DH and I'm so happy to hear for the both of you that the little bump was indeed little and he's making some great progress. He's got an fabulous support team headed by you. Great news on the pathology. We are sending many sunny AZ prayers for him that each day he will get stronger, be able to walk more, eat solids soon, and just start feeling better.

Great kitty and grandkids photos. They all look well loved!

Hugs to you....I know you have to be exhausted but you are strong...this I know for certain. I hope once he is much much much better, you can take a spa weekend somewhere and KTSS will be at your beck and call.

Morning Everyone! :coffee::coffee::coffee: WOOT! Today is Friday. Way cool! I am off for an adventure with Nicholas and William. it will be 65/70 here today, and I think a beach trip is in order... :woot: Have a good one everyone.

DH update: Things continue to improve. Lungs are looking good, sounding good. They were ready to move him out of the ICU yesterday to the thoracic surgery recovery floor, but alas, no rooms are available. So maybe today on that. He still is on nasal O2 support, at a minimal setting. He continues with his PT and OT, doing exercises as requested. Walking too, with the aid of a walker. They may see how he does today without one. He spent most of yesterday out of bed in a chair, reading some, watching TV some, and just hanging out the rest. Eating real food has resumed. He is happy about that. They will evaluate him on Monday and then think about seeing when he can return home.

@Shoeskitty , @carfurby , @Marje and Gracie - THX all for the vines, well wishes and good thoughts. We so appreciate them. Progress is there Now we work on getting him in good enough physical condition to be able to return home. Being essentially bed ridden for two weeks has taken its toll. Hopefully in a few days that can happen. We shall see. Neither of us are in a rush, as we want him well enough to be there, and not have to return to the hospital. The progress is there and we expect that it will continue. looking good over all!

@Marje and Gracie THX on the pics and the boys. They are both doing great, having fun being kids. And yes, we are grateful that the pathology report came back good. We still have to do return visits with the oncologist and see what is if any, treatment is still needed. That will come once he is recovered from the surgery. I lve teh thought of that spa weekend! :):):)

@julie & punkin (ga) Morning Julie, and thanks! We are relieved. it has been a long battle for him, but things are slowly improving. The progress this past week has been good, and we expect all will be well, once he goes through some rehab. The healing has truly begun.
