I took Qweed to the Vet, it’s the first time he’s seen him since he had me starving him to death on the glucose cat food. He was amazed, couldn’t believe it, whatever I was doing was working he said, he’s happy with his curve. His highest was 230, the last time I took him was before meeting you all, when he was starving and staying above 600 and 700. I told him about the website and showed him my chart, I’ve been slacking on keeping it filled out, but he was very impressed. I told him we changed his food immediately after you told me to and he doesn’t need 100cc of fluids every other day now. He said he looks and feels great and I might want to watch his weight.,, he’s gone from 5lbs skin and bone to 8.2 . You all saved my cats life ! Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
Did you do a repeat test immediately to see whether that 43 is valid or just a dud number? I'd test him again right now and if he's still very low, no insulin for sure.
It looks like you gave the shot about 4 hours later than usual last night? Has it been 12 hours since that injection?
OMG, that is the same cat? You, your vet and your cat are amazing, we just passed along common sense and experience and it was a pleasure.
Yes I tested twice, 43 and 48 depending if I select before or after meal, he had eaten some when I got up at 5 am
I just checked again 1/2 hour later and he ate almost a whole can a half hour ago, still at 48, I have to leave, should I give him honey ? How much? Or just leave him with food out ? .
Where is he in his cycle? You’re at least a +8, right? If so, he’s probably going to start heading up soon/now. Can you leave some more food out for him?
Can you clarify how many hours it's been since his PM shot? How long it's been will help inform the answer to your questions.
No insulin for sure. Leave food out. He shouldn't keep diving without a shot but ProZinc can sometimes last a bit longer than 12 hours in some kitties some of the time.
We were traveling last night and when I stopped to check at her 12 hour mark he was only 134 so I didn’t give him any, when I got to the hotel at 10pm it was 400 so I gave him 3.5 , now ten hours later he’s down to 43.
I asked the vet 3 times Monday when I picked him up , at what point do I lower his dose, he told me not to worry, that 4 U is fine , I know better and I don’t know anything . He said that’s why it’s good to let him just do a curve every couple of weeks, But im to paranoid not to check it , like you all have said , im pretty sure if I just listened to the Vet I would have overdosed and killed him this morning with 4U . Last night was the first in several weeks I dropped it to 3.5 because of that low 134 yesterday.
Exactly. I adore my vet, but when Sam was first diagnosed he told me the same thing...and I probably would have killed my cat - or at least harmed him - if I hadn't found this place and learned how to test. Vets try their best, but sometimes their best is dangerous!
Okay it’s 5pm , he’s up to 487 it’s been 19 hours since he had 3.5 units. What do you think I should give him ?
Don’t worry about the Pre-shot number. Go with 3u as Kris suggested. Is it your normal shot time now?
Always look at the lows to judge a dose. The PSs can be high for a variety of reasons - bouncing, lack of duration, etc. They're chiefly a guide to tell you whether a dose is safe to give - ie., PS is high enough to support it.
He looks real good. It is unfortunate, but many of us realize we have a diabetic cat when they lose a bunch of weight. I'm glad you have been successful in bringing Qweed back to health. Dosage regularity and also regular BG testing is important. Also, very important to test the nadir (+6) whenever you can. That will help you avoid another hypo. I agree with the dosage reduction. You are looking for trends, and Qweed has trended down a lot on 4U, so that is too much. Great pics! If you have not read the Prozinc stickies, I recommend it. When we re-wrote the Prozinc sticky in 2016, it was a group effort, and there is good info there.
Hang there in with the 3 u dose for now. There'll likely be some gigantic bounces after that lime green. Don't be fooled by those inflated numbers.
You could try it IF you can monitor beginning at +2 and have enough test strips and higher carb food to give if needed. That data after the PS is very important in knowing what a dose will do. The PSs are less important - unless they're lower than usual like this morning or very low like that lime green.
I’ll be traveling back home today, so I can stop and test more, but I want to be safe, what do you think about 2.5 ? And high carb cat food is any food other than FFC ?
An easy way to know it's high carb is if it's anything "in gravy". You can also check the food list in my signature that lets you sort by brand to find the carb level - anything above 10% is high carb. As far as the lower dose, Kris gave a good suggestion, but you always need to go with the dose that you'll be comfortable with. If you're on the road today and it's not a drive that will allow you to pull over and test, it's okay to go lower with the dose.
One hour after eating it’s down more to 163 , I’ll do 2.5 maybe? I will be able to do checks , I definitely don’t want an emergency on a Sunday on the. Road
Lowering the dose in these circumstances makes sense. Try 2.5 u and test when you can. Re remission after steroid use - definite possibility but early days.
When you skipped yesterday he ended up in the 400's, so while we certainly hope he will go into remission, he isn't there yet.
