Got back from Darwin last night and Tucker looks wonderful, very happy and cooing all the time. He is down to a 2.5 dose this week and seems to be thriving on it. He's been eating 1/3 can of Friskies Chicken Loaf and every morning he gets an extra chicken neck just to keep his teeth pretty.
QUESTION: A friend gave us a brand new pen of her insulin and asked if it is suitable for cats. (She had given us a whole box of Lantus...but her Dr changed her drug...dagnabbit.) Does anyone know anything about Ryzodeg 70/30 (70% insulin degludec(rys)/ 30% insulin aspart) ??? She had dropped the pen off whilst we were away and Claire put it in the fridge. I've not heard of it and was wondering if anyone else has??

Not quite. The caregivers in the Tresiba Forum are using insulin degludec alone... nothing added to it.

This Ryzodeg 70/30 is a combination of the long lasting insulin degludec and the fast acting aspart (NovoLog [insulin aspart] is a fast-acting insulin that starts to work about 15 minutes after injection, peaks in about 1 hour, and keeps working for 2 to 4 hours). Basically, you have a fast acting insulin followed by a long-acting insulin combination shot, and yet they work independently of each other.

In my opinion and at this time, we just don't know enough about the use of degludec by itself in cats to even explore the use of Ryzodeg 70/30.

I'd want more information before attempting to use it. For example, I'd want to know when onset and nadir occurs (in MY cat) as well as how much duration MY cat was getting when using degludec alone. Neither of the cats in the Tresiba Forum are getting anywhere near the 42 hours coverage humans are supposed to receive with degludec alone. Jessica (& Conan) is or was shooting Tresiba three times a day (TID).

    Just my 2 cents...

Thanks Jill very much for all that great information. Your knowledge is amazing. I did recognise that degludec was in this new insulin but I knew nothing about it and the 70/30 combination bit concerned me.
Well Patty there is your answer... no, the insulin is not at all suitable for Tucker.

I couldn't find any info about that insulin (on the internet) applicable to cats. It sounds like an interesting combo. We have had other owners use a fast acting insulin combined with longer term insulins - for Experts only. It would be interesting to see this insulin dosed to cats in the future, with veterinarian or manufacturer specifications.

Tucker is doing great - I am glad to hear his health is stable.:bighug:

I hope the Net Ball event went well in Darwin. The nearest we got to Darwin was Cannes and the nearby rain forest in 1997 (a million years ago).

I've just caught up with all of this. Thanks so much for the information. I'll give her the vial back and buy another round of Lantus. I found a vet here in South Australia that will sell a single vial (not a pen) for 45.00. It's a lot more intimidating drawing it up from a glass vial than from the pen. I didn't have a chance to post his morning numbers today. He was a little high (14), but my husband found a fried rice container in the lounge room that had been painstakingly licked out, it had a bit of rice left in it when it had been dumped in the bin... The bin is a metal variety that you have to push a pedal with your foot in order to open it, I've tried to open it with my hand before and failed. We have visions of Daisy jumping from the counter onto the pedal and Tucker timing his jump into the bin.... After the elevated morning and having his insulin, his PM number is back to an 8, so he is doing well.

Aaaah these cats.....they lead the beans a merry dance:D:joyful:
I hope he enjoyed the fried rice.
$45 for a cartridge (pen) of Lantus is not too bad but I used to be able to get a 5 pen pack of levemir at the chemist for $100. I'd ask at the chemist how much a 5 pack would cost if you had a vet prescription.

If there is sugar or "special" food, they will find it. I'm so glad to hear your kittehs are doing well, and keeping you on your toes.

We also had problem with garbage thieves, mostly the dawgs. So the garbage is in the garage. Less convenient for us, but dogs can't open doors.
