Bonjour, friends. I am looking for a low carb AND low calorie cat food for my kitty Sebastian. He has gained a lot of weight since being on Lantus (probably coincidental but paranoia is getting the best of me) and aside from Sheba I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with a weight loss plan for their kitties? He’s just been getting huge and I feel so helpless as he looks so uncomfortable and his bg is still unregulated. Thank you.

    Hello

You have to most experienced in weight loss, proper diets, and diseases in our former Veterinarian Dr Lisa here and her own catinfo.com webpages.
She is a magnitud person in the field in terms of Veterinary Society and for several years both proir to 2008 and after until scaled back her presence here towards 2010/2011 due her own Vetrinary Practice but has created an page about all there is to know about catfood, diseases, weight loss and lots more on her own Veterinary page. She has also taken in several very overweighted cats into her home and with her safe weight loss program gotten all of them back into prime shape. It does take dedication though.

Dr Lisa and I worked very well and put an effective stop to a carb lowering medication my Swedish vet had put Simba on, Acarbose, instead for just the proper cut carbohydrate food and food management changes.

Her page catinfo.org has so much information that you have to read and study it hard and diligent. I personally can't credit her enough.
On it she also have the ingredients and a recepy for making your own safe cat food.

Do read it, bit by bit. I can promise you will see everything from a new and fresh point.

    Veterinary Lisa Pierson's site catinfo.org.

i believe the purina pro plan focus weight management pate case that we were given to try out a couple months ago was low carb and low calorie - think it was around 4% carb and definitely was under 75 cal per 3 oz cans. their other flavor one for weight control, has a reddish square on it and says like metabolism on label, it was also low cal and low carb and it was minced pieces with gravy i do believe (was not a hit with our 10 cats - pate was).. you’re in France though so i don’t know if you get it there or not. if not, fish based wet foods tend to be mostly low in calories and carbs so you could check those in your area.. use this calculator and enter the nutritional info on the cat food and it will give you the carbs and calories for that food (if no ash amount on cans to put into calculator, use number 2, for most commercial wet foods have around that much or more in it) http://www.scheyderweb.com/cats/catfood.html

“”was wondering if anyone has had any luck with a weight loss plan for their kitties”” i am a big believer in ‘calories in, calories out’ for a diet plan for both pets and humans without real medical conditions.. i have always lost the extra weight every time when i followed that rule for my body type/etc. and it doesn’t limit what foods you can eat, just how much. so when my cats get chubbier on the scale, their current food type amount/calories get cut instead of dealing with having to switch food which often leads to stinky poop issues. i do feed high protein meat based foods already which is really important when they are on a diet so do try to do so.. limiting calories works for them too, however when your cat’s BG numbers get really low, let him eat all he wants at that time to keep his BG from going lower!!

    Hello,
My adopted diabetic kitty, Bonbon, was obese when she went into rescue, and when she first came here.
She'd been on a dry diet all her life, and when she came here I transitioned her to low carb and lower calorie food to help with her weight loss. I also got some baby scales to weigh her on to monitor the weight loss so that it wasn't going too fast. (Weight loss needs to be done carefully in kitties, and especially carefully with diabetics...)
As well as feeding her lower calorie food I also added a little water to that to help her feel fuller.
Exercise seemed to help her too. I bought all kinds of toys for her, trying to find something that caught her attention and 'eventually' she did become more playful... And I got her a large catnip toy that she would grab hold of and kick with her back legs to give them a bit more exercise. She really didn't want to move off her favourite armchair at first, unless to eat or use the litter tray....so I moved those a bit further away so she had to walk a bit further, haha! ...I think part of the problem was that her joints had become stiff due to her not moving around. But her mobility has improved. And she can even run now if she really feels she has to!

There is a list of UK low carb foods, many of which should be available in France also (quite a few from Zooplus, for example). The list also shows calories per 100g.
And if you scroll right down to the bottom of the list there are a few foods there (requested by members here!) that are available in mainland Europe but not the UK.
Here's the link in case that list is useful for you.
Please just ask if you need more help.
