3/28 First known cat with coronavirus

Hi All! Long time no post. I have been keeping up with news from all of you as much as I can. Things are a bit crazy here in NYC. We had an emergency with our civvie Luigi and although he is fine now, it was quite an adventure trying to get him help under these conditions. We broke a wine glass and thought we got all the pieces cleaned up, but somehow he ingested some small shards of glass! We are now using plastic wine glasses.
A friend sent me this article about the first documented case of a cat with coronavirus so I thought I'd share it here.

My worst fear. Frankie's nickname is "mouth" He isn't really interested in food per se, but has to investigate everything using his mouth, especially if it makes noise. So glad Luigi ok now

You are exactly right -- I heard an odd sound and realized Luigi was playing with a small piece of glass we'd missed when we were cleaning up. He had it in his mouth! Luigi must be Frankie's long lost cousin! I checked and saw no cuts, but when he stopped eating later that day I realized he must have swallowed some small glass shards while he was playing with it. The hospital X-ray confirmed it, but lucky for us it did no internal damage before it passed out in his poop.
I agree with you -- the story made me sad too. Take good care of you & yours!

 

Wow! Were you lucky! Broken glass and my pets makes me very nervous. I’m a klutzy person and go through a set of wine glasses and drinking glasses a year. I am switching to stemless wines glasses to help .

The article is scary and I saw where the two dogs contracted the virus. Heard that sick dogs are being abandoned.

 

Coronavirus is not uncommon in cats. One of my kitties, George, contracted it years and years ago. He was 20 years old when he died. There are different strains of the virus.

 

A different strain of corona virus is very common in other mammals as well. Pregnant cattle are often treated with a virus vaccine to prevent the newborn calf from getting diarrhea and dying. I'm just waiting to hear of some idiot that injects himself/herself with the cattle vaccine.

Common sense dictates that if you are sick, you should stay away from everyone... including your pets, but unfortunately the common sense flower doesn't grow in everyone's garden.

 

How scary. I'm so glad Luigi is okay.

 

Love the idea of stemless glasses! Yes, we were VERY lucky! That is too sad about sick dogs being abandoned.

FIP, Feline Infectious Peritonitis, is caused by a coronavirus, actually a faulty immune response to feline cornonavirus. A nasty, gruesome disease, no known cure, fatal in 95% of cases. Fortunately, it is pretty rare.

I, alas, lost a cat to FIP some years back. A handsome young fellow I brought home from the SPCA. They said he was mellow. Turned out he was actually ill. But at least he had a home for his last few months.

 

George wasn't FIP+. He just had some variant of coronavirus. He was sick, recovered, and lived a long life.

He was a very pretty kitty.

 

SO handsome! Glad he had a loving home when he needed it most.
