Hi all. Dipper has been in remission since July 2019. I noticed he seems to not be acting like himself for the last few days so I checked his blood. He was at 396 (relion meter). I checked him a couple hours later and he was at 490. He currently only eats fancy feast pate and friskies pate. This morning when I tested he was at 353.

Should I restart him on insulin or continue to monitor? If I start, how much should I start with? Prior to remission he was on 2 1/2 units 2 times a day.
    Thank you

Sorry you haven't gotten responses, this group is a little quiet. Is there any chance he's got an infection going on causing BG to rise?

I'm going to tag some people to see if anyone has experience with restarting insulin after remission.

Sorry for the pings everyone, just trying to get some more experienced eyes here!

I am not sure about an infection. He has never had any health problems other than his original diabetes diagnosis. He still seems playful and happy. Walks around with tail up and pays with his brothers (and me). Just a bit more tired and his fur isn’t as groomed. He also still has a good appetite

I would get his teeth checked as well as a look-over to make sure there's no UTI or other infection/pain going on

And yes, I'd restart insulin ASAP. Those numbers are too high and not doing his internal organs any good.

No, lower to start. Either 0.5 or 1u I'm thinking, but let someone else chime in to confirm.

Ok I will see what they say too. I remember everyone thinking the original amount prescribed was pretty high for him.
    Thanks again

I'm wondering if your ProZinc is still effective considering it's age.

I think I'd err on the side of safety and get a new vial.

I'd probably start at 1U and see how it goes

Ok thank you. I looked on the box and it says use before 7/2020 so it should still be ok

Is the vial opened already or is it brand new?

I would get your kitty a vet appointment. Cat's can certainly fall out of remission but a fructosamine test would let you know if the high numbers have been there for a while or if this is potentially due to something acute (e.g., a UTI, dental, etc.)

Then you are good to go as far as the insulin being good. I'd suggest starting with 0.5U, and going up from there.

Have you seen our revised and updated Sticky PROZINC DOSING METHODS?
They were updated in February 2020, so you might want to go take a look.
All the other "Sticky" or pinned posts in the Prozinc ISG have also been updated.

p.s. Some updates to your User Id Signature would be a good idea too. No reason to have your first curve results in the signature. We can see that type of information in your SS.
