Oh my how did that happen.
My question is Fritz is a long time fella here.
His numbers lately have been all of the place. I usually handle low BG numbers not high like this.
I do have a cat vet that is aware of all this. He has had me using urine test strips that have continued to show small trces to negative sugars in his urine, he also told me that Fritz has been given way too much insulin.
I really would like some advice.
I am terrified of this high of numbers. Wil he go into a coma?
His vet told me to skip his am dose of 6 units and once I see sugars on his urine test strips to start at a much lower dose. Isn't it dangerous to just stop insulin?????
    Thank you

    Hey Deb

Welcome back! How is a Fritz feeling?

Using urine glucose strips to dose is tough....and inaccurate as there is always a delay between when you see the high numbers and when the glucose shows up.

Without any nighttime tests, it’s difficult to tell you unequivocally on the dose and you’ve bounced the dose around a bit lately. No judgment...just an observation. It’s possible he dropped lower the night of 7/11, bounced, and you are seeing the high before the break with these blacks but there isn’t enough data for me to know absolutely.

What I would not do is stop insulin and wait until you see glucose in the urine. That’s called a rebound check and it doesn’t work when the dose has been taken up properly. All it does is cause Fritz to be in high numbers needlessly and build up glucose toxicity.

    I hope that helps! :):):):bighug::bighug:

Ok so I'll get better night time testing and should I keep him at 6 units? or would you increase slowly till I see lower numbers? His urine is really clear and has a funny smell, not sweet or fingernail polisher remover.
I guess Dr. Craig thoughts were that with all his weight and not loosing weight that I was over dosing with insulin.
Fritz is eating close to 3oz of raw and still no weight loss.
He is eating good and drinking a bit more with the high numbers.

    Welcome back Deb.
What dose a cat needs does not depend on weight. Neko's weight didn't change much, but her good dose ranged from 8.75 units down to 0.75 units over time, back up to 7 units after a few years, then back down to 0.25 units a year later. During that time, my vet stopped freaking out if her urine glucose was negative, it just told me I was keeping her in fairly good control and under renal threshold most of the time. Which was my goal.

Look at Fritz's nadirs, once you've been at a consistent dose for a while, and that'll tell you where he should go. 6 units is as good as any to start, he did below 50 while on 6.5.

Other than his numbers, how is Fritz doing?

    Hi Wendy!
Fritz is doing good better than me when it comes to this disease.
My oh my I figured out why his # was so high..I rechecked my notebook where I chart everything before I put it on his SS and I forgot his am shot today. This is what happens when you deviate from the protocol here. Thus morning I got up an hour and a half earlier than usual tested him and forgot the shot. Hopefully this won't happen again.
I'm thankful it was that and not an infection or who knows what else it could have been.
    Appreciate you!

Phew! I'm glad the answer was so easy. Better update the SS then.
