518 to 326 at +2.5??? Please not again

Guys... I’m at a loss again and hoping this doesn’t turn bad, Jonas went from 518 PMPS to 326 at +2.5. Could this maybe be his bounce clearing? I am utterly terrified of a repeat of the other night. The 1U didn’t budge him much today yet suddenly this is happening. My heart is pounding... we can’t do this again. I know this is still very different but he’s never come down that much that fast.

Thanks so much Diane, I was so ready for a restful night before work and tested him before I crawled into bed... bam. I’m seriously concerned by this. Will do on the LC, I want to soften this drop.

Will do. I’m trying to tell himself that his hypo happened at a much lower PS and much more insulin, but I am so on edge.

 

422!! What on earth, could the 326 have been a bad reading? There was definitely plenty of blood, poor baby is still bleeding super easy from all his pokes yesterday.

 

Its going to be hard to get off work tomorrow and I already haven’t slept much after yesterday so I’m going to try and sleep a little bit and I’ll set an alarm to get up in about 2 hours to get a test in. If anything funny happens I’ll pop back on, otherwise (hopefully because I don’t want anything bad to happen!) I’ll update everyone in the morning.

 

That sounds more like it, could have been a bad reading. Don't feed him anything now and check him in an hour. I know his poor ears must be sore.
Pick up some of the Neosporin Ointment with pain relief NOT THE CREAM
If we knew it might have been a bad reading , which how could we, I would have said to test him again right after you got that 326

I just gave him a bite of purebites ocean whitefish for his post-poke treat, no other food. I shouldn’t feel relieved to see a 400 but I was, LOL. That would be much more normal. I should’ve retested on the 326 but I assumed there was enough blood and it would be fine, but I’m sure bad readings can happen for any number of other reasons. Thank you for being here for us <3 I will check in. Hopefully soon we can have normal, restful nights again.

Good morning!! I wanted to go ahead and post, it’s 2AM and he’s at 366 +6. I’m so relieved.

 

311 at AMPS, I’m shocked he was that “low” after being so high and he ate quite heftily last night. I wonder if this could be some insulin sensitivity from his bad hypo? Since I have to go to work (as an absolute zombie, omg) I think i’m going to just give him .5U and see how he does. I know that’s a chicken dose but I’m just too uncertain. A week ago I wouldn’t have flinched at giving him 3-4U but he’s never reacted to insulin this way. I live close enough that I can run home briefly on lunch and get a check in then.

Thank you both so much <3 I am having the hardest time focusing at work but I'm at least a little comforted that the worst he can do is run a bit high on that .5U. I want to get him back into the yellows soon, I felt super comfy with those, then we'll get to the blues but I've got to figure out why he's reacting to his insulin this way so suddenly. Apparently my mom gave him quite a few treats last night after I went to bed because she was concerned about that huge drop, so while I'm partly glad he was 311 and not super high, I'm also shocked it kept him that "low" all the same.

I'm certainly no expert but I am really wondering if his new vial was just more potent/his old one was losing potency early, and then that long-lived hypo episode has given him some sensitivity, and that combination is what we're dealing with. His new ketone strips should arrive today so I'll feel better to be testing those since he's reduced right now, ketones scare me to death. But the most important thing: he has had all 5 P's accounted for, you'd never know he had such a scary day on Saturday! He has been the happiest, most alert boy who is eager to eat and has been pottying great

 

If the old Prozinc was left out on the counter for an extended period of time, that could be a factor.
You will more at ease when you can test for ketones.

It's never been left out for longer than it takes me to draw it up, go give him his shot, then come back and put it in the fridge I honestly wish that had been the case because at least then I'd have a reason for why it's suddenly affecting him so strongly, ugh. I will definitely feel better with ketone testing, he's never had anything above a .3 and most recently a .1 (there was one .6 but I honestly think the strip had an error, I dropped it in the floor right before and hoped it would be okay since they're so expensive, it has never been that high again) but I'm nervous since he's had a sudden insulin reduction. The good news is he's eating and drinking super well and I know those two things combined with insulin are ketones' mortal enemy

Another one of my dumb questions... is it normal to be super anxious to test him now? I was SO used to it, now I'm shaking every time because I'm terrified that a hypo number is going to flash up on the screen. Hopefully after a bit more time I'll be back to normal myself

 

Its not only normal but to be expected! Youre still relatively new to all this. I would be more worried if you were cavalier about the whole hypo incident. Its going to be ok Whitney..

 

Thank you dear, that means so much I feel like I am traumatized by it, I keep reliving being so happy go lucky Saturday around lunchtime and testing Joe and seeing that first 48 on his glucometer... UGH. I wish I just would've given him less insulin but I looked at how he'd reacted before and how well he'd done... so many "what ifs."

 

Instead of beating yourself up over this, chalk it up to a learning experience. One thing to remember, maybe put it on the fridge door:

"BETTER TO BE HIGH ONE DAY, THAN, TOO LOW FOR ONE MINUET"

It is a steep learning curve especially when you are a detailed oriented person. But you WILL get this I PROMISE.

I use to think this was too hard and how how hoooow am I going to do this...I finally got it. Everything has changed so much since I had Trouble. So many more choices and decisions. My head would be spinning...much like yours. In time this will make more sense.

He's been doing SO well and I'm trying to focus on that, you'd never have known that he would have had an hours-long hypo event less than 48 hours ago. I have been chanting that phrase in my head too. My mom wasn't keen on me giving him just .5U this morning but I held firm and kept telling her that like a mantra

I took a slightly late lunch so it was around 1:30PM when I checked him, 366 at +6! I'm honestly not upset with that number at all, I'm sure he'll likely be in the reds (hopefully not blacks) at dinnertime, but we're taking baby steps.

My mom is disabled and homebound, she is with him during the day, but she just can't test him easily like I can so I'm still holding onto my chicken doses until we get this figured out since I'm at work, especially since he never really showed any bad hypo symptoms except for being a little out of it and that could've easily looked like just being sleepy. She said he has been very munchy (which is partly why I'm relieved at that number, LOL) and played this morning! He's been super alert and active and has peed, pooped, and gotten good drinks. He was just settling down for a nap in his favorite sun spot when I left to go back to work.

 

If you are super worried, look into the FreeStyle Libre.
People have had varying success using it with cats. The downfalls are expense, sensor falling off, not always lasting 14 days, sensor needs to be replaced by a vet every 14 days.

Gosh, 24/7 monitoring would be a Godsend. My biggest hesitation would be the frequent vet trips, he stresses out so badly in the car that I hate taking him unless absolutely necessary. I knew these existed for humans but didn’t know about then working for kitties. I’ll look into that link, thank you so much for sharing it <3

Running a few minutes behind because of some dinner difficulties but I’m about to get his PMPS, I’m hoping it’s not sky high. I’m leaning towards .75 tonight or 1 depending on where he’s at.

 

431, not good but not as bad as I worried he could’ve gotten with just .5U this morning. Going to see how much he eats and then go with either .75 or 1U.

 

Chicken shot of .75U tonight just because he didn't eat as much dinner as normal, probably because he had quite a bit of extra baked chicken breast as we were fixing dinner (and my mom said he was quite munchy today). He is getting away with murder right now after how Saturday went, LOL.

 

For what it's worth, numbers in the high 40's are perfectly normal blood sugar numbers for non diabetic cats. Got one here like that. We don't want cats on insulin down that low, so we take action when a cat is in the 40's. You did great with that long stretch of green a couple days ago - food and testing are your tools to keep him safe. Once you've gotten over the trauma of Saturday, I expect you'll need to increase some more.

 

So sorry I missed your post, Wendy! Thank you so much for your message, that really means a lot to me <3 It was super scary and I am definitely still shaky lol, especially since I am still a bit unsure of what his numbers are doing right now. I'm hopeful that once we are farther removed from the event, his numbers and his reaction to his insulin will make a bit more sense again.

 

Your current problem with numbers is that you lowered the dose too much. He needed a reduction, but not as much as you gave.
