Yesterday. Caber Yr 2 Day 290

Reducie given. I will be picking up her AB shortly. She is picking at her food. She is making larger urine deposits and not piddling today. Made appt for recheck and BP check as it will be the 3 weeks since starting the amlodipine. This appt is with the part time IM who Ollie's vet has worked with in a previous practice. Karen the office person I've gotten to know the last few weeks says this doctor has advanced training in cardiology and something else I think geriatric but not sure. Anyway, Ollie will have another Dr who will know her if Dr. Amy isn't available. That was one problem when Dr Amy was at other practice. The associate wasn't comfortable treating Ollie because she didn't know her and was hesitant to treat because of the cabergoline.

Dad is starting to have low grade temp (dehydration ??) And kidneys have slowed down output. I have call this afternoon with his financial advisor to see what needs to be done. We are going to be hit with mega taxes.

I know you've probably read everything you can find about Cystitis but I found this & thought maybe it would help.

“Idiopathic” means that we do not currently understand exactly why this condition occurs.“Cystitis” refers to inflammation of the bladder. There are many causes of cystitis (bladder inflammation). Urinary tract infections, urinary tract cancer and bladder stones can all cause cystitis (bladder inflammation). FIC is somewhat different than these other condition in that there is no readily identifiable source of inflammation. FIC is the subject of intensive research. Humans suffer from a similar condition called interstitial cystitis, and many of the same things are found in feline patients. There is no single cause of the condition and the exact cause is yet to be determined. New research seems to indicate that cats and people that suffer from this condition have an exaggerated response to stress, involving the neurologic and endocrine systems and which may be genetic in nature. However, environment and diet all seem to contribute.

When I picked up Ollie's AB from vet today, the IM Dr. was in and spoke with me on the phone. She was present when the ultrasound was done. She believes it is FIC. She did dispense the AB though and I am to give it for 14 days. Also agreed with increasing the dmannose. She also talked about cerenia now being used for this which @Wendy&Neko mentioned. So Ollie will be on 8mg of cerenia for 14 days and anytime it flares up. The bupre she is already on and when in flares give subq every other day. She also talked about a rx food that is low carb and low phos I said I would be willing to try. But they didn't have any and I don't remember which one it was as she mentioned a few.

I also got to thinking about the cat litter I use when I thought it was uti. The litter turns to cement consistency or puddles up and I don't always get to scooping it out right away. So I will be going back to wegmans brand as it clumps immediately into a ball. And get back to washing each pan out weekly (got lax in that). I started that today but didn't get it finished.

Take some time for yourself now. Maybe plant a peace lily or a special flower in your garden.

((((Paula)))) My deepest condolences on your dad's passing. Even when expected, it is still very hard. Take care of you. :bighug::bighug::bighug: I like Kel's idea of the peace lily, or maybe a peace rose.

Sounds like you've got a good backup IM vet. Here is a paper on Feline lower urinary tract disease, including cystitis and treatments. My little guy also got urethral spasms, so also got prazosin a couple times. Making sure he got plenty of fluids in food too, was also key. Once he got on a raw diet, he never had an episode again. Of course, it could have been he was finally getting comfy in my house - he had spent 7 years in a shelter with a couple failed adoptions before coming home with me. I also got the Feliways going for him.

It's a good thing that you have a backup vet who seems to know what she's doing and who's willing to treat Olive! Looks like Ollie will be getting another reducie.
