6/23 Boris AMPS 89

Seems he must have gotten low last night. He's steady going up. That or the few extra cubes of raw he stole this am have him soaring. I'm betting he dipped while I was sleeping.

Yeah, he probably went lower at night or the 85/89 was his nadir.
Kind of scary if he's going to dip at that time. I thought I was safe when I went to bed. Guess I may have to set alarms and hope they wake me between 12-3am to check him. Based on the +6 280 I definitely think he dipped between the wee hours and is now in another bounce. I just hope he didn't go too low.

He was adamant about waking me at 430. Got a claw to the toe. Obviously I wasn't responding to meows that early. Makes me feel bad that I might have missed it and something could have happened.

Does he get food in the PM cycle after you go to bed? After +4? In active cycles, that will help keep him from going low. He wasn't much lower than PMPS at +4 last night. I am inclined to think that it was an end of cycle nadir. A demand for food can be a warning that his numbers are low.

I haven’t fed anything after +2 at this point unless he was driving too fast. I can certainly add another feeding to be safe. So maybe a LC around +6? I could leave some dehydrated raw 6% or do you think I should do a wet lower carb?

Do you mean this morning or in all cycles?

His nadir seems to be around +6. I would add a snack at +4 and even one at +6 in active cycles like last night. You want to feed lower carb at +6 (unless he is dropping and needs more carbs).

Thanks! To be clear, when he is in a bounce cycle I won't give him the snacks?

Last night's drop was a bit slower and not quite as drastic. I did have 6% snacks last night at +1 and +2 which may have dropped him slower. With adding a snack at the later times should I keep the am snacks or drop one of them depending on what is happening at PS?

Question on low numbers. I was looking up what happens if a cat gets low numbers and you don't notice it, how it will affect them, and I came across this info on another DCC site. They say not to give honey if the cat is not unresponsive and eating, as it risks putting the cat's liver back to sleep and possibly extends hypoglycemic episodes.

is this a different take, or has anyone had experience with this TR method? Whenever Boris has started dipping under 40 I've been told to give him a little honey to increase his BG if it's being stubborn and not wanting to rise. Wondering how true this is on causing the liver to go back to sleep, or if it does more harm to the liver by not administering honey?

"Even if the blood glucose drops to 30-50, do not feed sugar syrup or dry food. A small, high protein wet food meal is all you need for a cat at these numbers and that is more for the owner than the cat."

I think you want to feed till +4 (at least) in all cycles, upto +6 if it is an active cycle like last night. Long gaps between meals can lead to stomach acid build-up. You want to spread his daily calorie quota into mini meals at PS, +1, +2 and +4. More meals/snacks of he is dropping low, of course. You'd adjust the carb% also depending on his numbers.

While I have heard of Dr. Hodgins, I am not familiar with her protocol. With TR, you do not want to feed dry food - even in low numbers - you want to give high carb wet and/or honey/karo/syrup. Sometimes HC is not enough or the cat doesn't want to eat - then you reach for honey/karo/syrup. However there is no way you don't feed your cat higher carbs in the 30s and 40s! If it is really late in the cycle, they may come up from the high 40s with just their usual low carb food. This might also work for some cats who are very carb sensitive.

The only exception to not feeding when below 50 is if it's at PS. This sticky discusses how to deal with numbers below 50 at PS when following TR:

Thanks! I've been wondering if that is what has caused his obsession with trying to eat grass when I take him outside. The stomach acid buildup makes sense.

I have him weaned down to 3 meals currently. I'll try the 4th starting tomorrow and see how that goes. Trying to balance the calories and deal with his rebuttal about smaller meals. ;)

We've seen cats die with that method. Not recommended! Her version of TR was developed for Prozinc/PZI. For Boris's sake, if he's low, give him carbs.

Thanks for the feedback! I've read several of the clinical trials and don't recall seeing that mentioned. Most of everything else was in line with what you recommend, but unless you are a member of their page, you can't find their sources for the info.
