AMPS 154

Well this bums me out... After 6 days of green AMPS, boom, 154. I even retested to make sure it wasn't a bad strip. Maybe a slight bounce from hovering him at the 50 line all night? I dunno.

Apologies to everyone I wasn't able to check in with much yesterday, very busy day personally for us but hopefully calm today.

Hi Alli, I hope you have a calmer day in your house today.
Smudge must be bouncing from all the good green! :D
He will be back there in a snap. Have a great day and smooth sailing for your sweet boy :bighug::bighug:

Maybe he went even lower than 50 last night tbh, and this is a bounce from that.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, once Hendrick started doing the "Sea of Green" thing he would occasionally still show up with a mid-blue AMPS. You see it on a lot of spreadsheets actually.

It always freaked me out and the people here would talk me down, tell me the occasional blue AMPS is no big deal. Watch for him to have extra downward momentum today, it is quite possible.

Thank you both for the encouragement. It is definitely discouraging, because you just always hope for forward progress, right? I know he will come back down - he already is with an unchanged 150 @ +1 after his breakfast. He probably did go lower between my testing spots, blah. I wish there were an easier way!

wow I didn't realize you got a test in at 11:30pm that is a rough night for you! Hopefully Smudge rewards you with a day off, maybe a chill cycle.

Knowing him though....nope. lol
I had fallen asleep on the couch after his +3, because he was playing and bathing and doing great... Then surprise! It was midnight and I had to do a +5.5.

And you nailed it... nope. 56 @ +2.:blackeye:

Surfin now. His ears are definitely sore from all the low BG pokes. He is not thrilled and hid from me after this one. :(

Do you rotate? By that I mean, up one ear and down the other, then repeat. We would note our SS in a way that let us know where we poked last, so we were moving around and using both ears. Giving as much healing time as possible before ending up back at a spot previously poked.

We also always sprayed a cotton round with this stuff and then folded the round over the edge of the ear and applied a small amount of pressure from both sides. It seemed to really help Hen's ears heal up quick.

Sorry if I never mentioned it before Smudge buddy!

I do alternate and try to go down to up in the sweet spots but the extra testing these green days has him irritated. :( Doesn't help that today's +2 I had to poke 4 times to get it (I've been one and done smooth poking for a couple weeks now!). I'm definitely ordering that spray. I read somewhere here that some people use neosporin to help them too.

Smudge, give your mama a break.
Love the new pic! :bighug::cat:

@Hendrick Cuddleclaw , I can't get the the link for "this stuff" to work. Could you please post the name of it? I'd like to look into it. Thanks!!

Has anyone ever mentioned to you the phenomenon of the "high before the low"? Some cats will get higher BG before dropping fast. Typically it's as a cat breaks the bounce. It means lots of downward momentum. I'm glad you tested at +3 today.
I suppose I should be happy his bounce was so blue then, right? Less of a drop, but still something to keep my eyes on. He seems to be nadiring around +4-5, but that preshot to +3 is steep sometimes.

Paws and everything crossed for that for you Alli. Safe surfing Smudge.
I also love the new pic :bighug::bighug::bighug:
Isn't it so cute?! He's always leaving his tongue out after bathing and this time it was extra long.:p

I found very conflicting things doing some Google-fu

here is one that says definitely do not use it

did a forum search and found this post. I never used it but many here recommend just using pure coconut oil.

I do know that generally neosporin is no longer recommended for use in cats. There are lots of other alternatives. Just today, in fact, I've been looking for alternatives. If it's just for ears though and not an actual wound, I would use some pet formulations with aloe or coconut oil (vaseline won't hurt either) or a colloidal silver cream/gel (I use that.)

These are great numbers. It looks like Smudge has been pretty stable in greens without the intervention of high carbs. When do you have to go to bed and can you leave food out for a Smudge snack?

I typically need to go to bed at his +2.5 but can sometime stretch to his +3. It's the getting up for +4 and beyond that kills me for work.

Yes I can leave some out. He just had some LC and I can leave some in his microchip feeder (so Penny can't get it and she has hers with kidney food he can't get). I can do this regularly no problem. He is actually shockingly good at listening to his body and asking for snacks, so I think he will eat.

So can you give a snack now and test again in like 30 minutes and leave more food out for him in the microchip feeder. And go to sleep?

And I leave it up to you as to whether you want to set an alarm to wake up in about 2 hours and test/feed if necessary. I know it’s hard to sleep sometimes wondering and worrying about what their BG is doing. Does Smudge sleep in a room with you so you can wake up and see if he’s okay?

Yes. He just had some so I can test at his +3 which will be 30mins from that snack.

What's difficult for me is I have sleep issues and was very recently given a doctor's regimen that I can't do if I'm setting alarms to wake (I sleep through them). Unfortunately he cannot sleep in our bedroom (husband is allergic) so it's the one cat free room in the house. He and his snores sleep through my alarms too.

Well you are doing a phenomenal job at caring for Smudge. I’m very impressed!

56 @ +2.25

I can't keep staying up every night with these low numbers. Not sure what to do.
Alli, could you maybe make his feeding and shot times earlier so you could get to bed earlier? Just a thought :bighug:
(I get up at 5:30 am to prep the food and supplements and draw insulin, husband thinks I’m a new wife. I could never get up before him, but now I have to! :banghead:)
