Spot was very sick the last few days and besides having diabetes and hyperthyroidism, we found out his heart was failing. He was very weak and seemed in pain late last night so we took him to the emergency center at 3:00 AM where we found out he had heart failure and that he was in very bad shape. My husband and I decided to put him to sleep and stayed with him and said our goodbyes. He was a funny cat, sometimes bratty, most times lovable. He had beautiful green eyes and was a scrappy NYC boy when I adopted him. I used to get his cat food there (NYC) at a store called Spoiled Brats, which just suited him fine. He snuggled with us on the couch when we watched TV but didn't like to be picked up. (He always let you know what he did and did not like.) He loved to come into the bathroom with me and just walk around in there, and when he was healthy, would roll around in the tub and meow with glee (I wanted to film it but never could figure that out). He often gave me back talk when I tried to tell him what to do. He fought with and played with our other kitty, DeeDee, who enjoyed licking his head (and that he would allow) and enjoyed life in Miami, lounging on our patio, his face in the sun, and catching the occasional lizard. I will miss my buddy Spot so much. I appreciate all the advice I've gotten here--it wasn't that long ago when diabetes seemed like such a big problem, but you guys all helped me though it.

I hope he's flying free somewhere. I hope he's got his face toward the sun, soaking it in.

Spot does sound like a great kitty. Love his picture. I'm sorry it was his time. Fly free Spot. Let your mommy know, in your own way, you made it to the otherside and you are sunning yourself while waiting to meet again. You did right by him.

  6. Oh, Jennifer, I am so sad to see this. Poor Spot just had too many things working against him at the same time.
In your sadness, try to take some comfort in knowing that you did right by him from the day you took him into your home. Letting him go was a great gift to him, even at the cost of breaking your own heart. My heart goes out to you and DH.

    Dear Jennifer,

I've wanted to write a note ever since you posted the lovely and comforting note on my thread about losing Sasha and said that, indeed, you had just lost your beloved Spot. I am so sorry to hear this, and I know how difficult this is. All of our kitties' little ways are so much with us as we walk around our homes. Your Spot sounded like one of a kind, and such a beautiful kitty, too! We are treated in their lives to their beauty, fun, and very particular ways that imprint upon our hearts.

I very much LOVED your description of Spot, as bratty and lovable and so much a New York cat, Awesome description, and I know the type -- because my two boys lived a good deal of their lives in our studio apartment in Hell's Kitchen. In fact, I know the store Spoiled Brats and used to go there (I'm in the Hudson Valley now though my work and a good bit of my soul are centered in the city.)

I hope in your time of difficulty and grieving that you and your husband have a strong sense of your beloved Spot, that time brings you solace and joy in the memories, and that you feel Spot's spirit and love with you -- because such love transcends the earthly separation we have. May you be comforted in all of the good times and the wonderful life you gave to your dear Spot!

Susan, and Angels Sasha and Orlando

Thanks, Susan! Are you a writer? You write so beautifully. Spot spirit does stay with me, as I'm sure your Sasha's stays with you. It's funny that you know about Spoiled Brats. Looks like they have moved to Washington Heights? The Hudson Valley is so lovely. I really don't miss my 450 sq ft. apt one bit, though Spot and DeeDee loved to get excited about the pigeons sitting by the window. DeeDee is the queen of catching lizards here in Miami.

p.s. Sorry I called Sasha a "girl." He's just so purty...but it sounds like he was very much a boy. They were lucky to have us for their moms, but even more, I feel lucky he picked me to be his mom/servant.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Jennifer. They are never here long enough. I always wonder why that is and I think they teach us lessons, many lesson, and one is about living a happy life while we're here and also about losing the ones we love and that we will be together again. Spot will always be with you and you will be with him always.

    Jennifer,

So DeeDee has moved on to lizards in Miami, from excitedly watching pigeons in Gotham? Fun! Thanks so much for your compliment about my writing -- much, much appreciated -- and yes, I am a writer, professionally. (I am a journalist. I have a site and project, Mindfulwalker.com, and also teach writing, train editors, and do online content.)

Spoiled Brats still has the place on West 49th, to my knowledge, in addition to the Washington Heights shop.Wild little shop, that one on West 49th.

I can imagine that Spot's spirit is much with you. That is a great and beautiful gift, isn't it? That bond is already so deep, and it deepens when our pets move with us around the country or the world. (Miami is cool and a great city!) I feel Sasha's and Orlando's spirits every day, and it is very soothing and wonderful.

Each day, I miss my kitties so, so much. But like you, I feel lucky that both my fellows picked me for their Mom. Hope that you continue to feel solace in the great life that you shared with Spot, and great companionship with DeeDee.

    Hugs, and pats to DeeDee,
    Susan

p.s. Sasha was definitely a "purty" boy, and a feisty and sweet one at that. :c)
