major setbacks this morning...

  • Bubba has peed inappropriately about 8 times so far this morning...
  • sometime before we got up, he peed twice on the floor - on the pp pads in front of his litter box & on a carpet
  • he pood 3 nuggets on the floor
  • as I was wiping him (while he was lying down), he peed himself! So I gave Bubba a bum bath
  • as I was drying him while he was lying down, he peed himself again! Luckily for both times, the stream was such that the pee didn't get on himself; but he's also never done that before either :(
  • then he had a small pee in his box
  • he had a puke
  • THEN he peed on the towel twice in two different spots while lying down
  • he tried to pee on his scratcher (nothing came out)
  • he peed on another carpet (was literally lying down, then sat up & peed)
  • then he peed and pood two logs on the pp pads in front of his box
  • then he was lying down, lifted up his bum and literally peed on the floor
I have no idea if the above is attributed to his arthritis, diabetes, UTI or what... I'm calling the vet when they open. His pee looks clear, no blood.

I have no idea wtf is going on with my boy...

I wonder if it is a UTI? Peeing small amounts multiple times and straining to pee are symptoms of a UTI. What was his puke like? How are his spirits? His appetite?

Probably... luckily the urine flows well, so no blockage. Puke was just the little bit of food he ate, with a small bit of fur. He ate some more food, so that's good. He seems downcast & sore. We literally get everything cleaned up, only for him to pee all over again :(
I am so over this. I just want my boy better and it's been one thing after another this past year.

:bighug::bighug::bighug:
Urinary tract infection doesn't mean blockage. With high sugars, infection is not uncommon with diabetics. You might want to get a vet appointment to have his urine tested. He may need antibiotics.

My baby boy is at the vet right now getting blood work, urinalysis, etc etc completed. He’s in good hands; they took him in last minute even though they’re fully booked.

My boy sure likes to hide his ailments well … everything all tickety boo… until $h1+ hits the fan (or in this case the floor LOL).

We just got back from the vet... my precious boy is falling apart :arghh:

Bubba has been diagnosed with pancreatitis; has hypokalemia/low potassium (unsure of the exact levels, awaiting blood panel results via email); has a UTI (e.coli based); is dehydrated (poor thing drinking like a fish right now); his fructosamine is 511 (it was 450 December 27 2022).

the vet prescribed: clavaseptin 50mg tabs - 2 tabs q12h ABX for UTI; onsior 9mg once/day for 4 days for pancreatitis inflammation; gabapentin 50mg tabs q8hr to manage neuropathic pain.

I'm absolutely devastated... I wonder if my boy will ever be regulated now I know he has pancreatitis, and what his quality of life will look like from now on. I still need to do research on pancreatitis and diabetes, but if anyone has any links/resources, I would appreciate it. thanks

First of all - :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: I'm glad you caught it so quickly. All those infections/inflammations can cause his blood sugars to go up too. And yes, you can still get him regulated, you just need to get over this hurdle. Your prompt actions will help. Make sure to keep testing him for ketones with the inflammation/infection going on, and higher numbers.

For pancreatitis, start with this: A Primer On Pancreatitis Unfortunately rather common with diabetics. How was it diagnosed? Buprenorphine might have been a better solution than onsior, which even the manufacturer on their website says shouldn't be given more than 3 days in a row. I'm glad he's eating, that can often be the first sign of a pancreatitis flare in cats.

For the UTI, you might want to pick up some probiotics. Antibiotics can also kill the good tummy flora, and make them feel icky, so probiotics can help. Give it a couple hours apart from the antibiotics. This page is a good reference on probiotics.

Thanks. Just wondering if the diabetes caused the pancreatitis or the pancreatitis caused the diabetes lol

Pancreatitis was diagnosed via the fPLI. He was totally asymptomatic - no vomiting (other than once this morning), good appetite (other than not really wanting to eat right away this morning), good solid BMs, he was touchy sometimes when we picked him up (but attributed that to his arthritis) - he is dehydrated (has been since his diabetes Dx) - but other than that, no Sx. We got home about 3 hrs ago, and he ate twice since then, so at least he is eating - whereas this morning he had little interest in food.

The vet gave us the choice of bupe or onsior... Bubba was on bupe in November I think for any pain he may have experienced at that time since his WBCs were sky high. She said both bupe and onsior would only be given for about 3-4 days anyways; so I chose onsior. She also suggested metacam; Bubba was on that for his arthritis, but since his SDMA has been high indicating kidney impairment, we thought it best to not move forward with metacam.

Thanks for the probiotics reminder, I'll look to see what we have at the local holistic pet store.

Neko was on buprenorphine for a couple years for her arthritis. It's not limited in time.

That's a tricky one, with probably no answer. I've seen kitty's here get pancreatitis flare from the stress of a vet visit.

since we got back from the vet approx 4 hrs ago, Bubba has had a good appetite - ate 4 nice meals so far
he's purring, moving around a bit more, bathing his chest & paws after eating, not so dopey (they mildly sedated him for his Tx this morning)
no more accidents / free flying pee everywhere lol poor guy
I gave him one round of ABX and gaba (50mg) so far - with one more round each later tonight
ANNDDD... his BG at +8 was 14.3mmol/L (257)

I think the gaba is kicking in... poor guy lookin a bit spacey with his mouth partially open (been a bit open since returned from vet, probs from mild sedation)

Hi Wendy,

how did Neko do on the bupe for pain management? did you administer via liquid (buccal), or tablet?
