We did not see much movement at 5 units, and have completed 6 cycles again.

Increase to 5.5u?

By the way, we are thinking of splitting his dose into two different injection sites moving forward (given at same time) as I have heard some people have had success with doing that. Also, hopefully we reduce the chance of stinging occurring. Is that worth the try?

Not for his size of dose, I have heard mixed results for people trying it at much larger doses. And you will double your syringe costs. The better solution to reducing stinging is to switch to Levemir. Similar action to Lantus, but the onset and nadir are a couple of hours later.

Yes on the 5.5 units as the new dose.
