Good morning everyone and (once again) a HUGE THANK YOU for being there ang guiding me through Rico's Hypo. I finally stayed up almost all night because he was lethargic for many hours after the hypo symptoms, refusing to eat or drink. My hand was shaking when I gave him the shot today! What if this happened while I wasn't at home??? Anyway, he's better this morning although he ate very little.

My main question is WHY did he start having a hypo at BG 54? He's had less in the past (44,43) and he didn't have a problem. Is it possible that his normal BG numbers are higher? I will notice his behaviour and write down when he's happier - this might give us insight as to dose adjustment, I think. Should I decrease when he's between 50-55 instead of below? I gave him a -0.25 today. Keep fingers crossed!

NEW UPDATE FROM THE VET: Rico's symptoms were a combination of hypo and liver reaction to toxins that had been concentrated due to eating too much protein. Rico's "normal" BG numbers are between 80-90 (the same vet has been treating him for the past 10 years) and keeping him long under that led him to sudden hypo. Also, he mentioned that his raised liver numbers in his last microbiological and biochemical tests are a result of eating Low Carb food with too much protein for too long. He suggested changing his food to MC or at least mix Animonda carny with MC or even HC food or even special food for the liver treatment. This would slow down recession but would help Rico avoid further liver disease.

Soooo.... We probably need a new food plan and new dosing schedule. PLEASE advise!!! <3

I just saw your post from yesterday. I'm so glad you had the guidance of other members to get you and Rico through his hypo scare and that he's doing better today. Very stressfull. I am not knowledgeable enough to advise in these situations, but I can send hugs and support:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Is it possible that his liver can drop his sugar even more and lead him to hypo faster? If you check Rico's SS, you'll see that his liver numbers were somehow elevated for the dirst time since diagnosed. Is there any food that can do good to BOTH liver and pancreas? I will also ask the vet of course but he doesn't seem very knowledgable regarding diabetes...

I don't have a complete answer to your question. One very realistic response though is that cats are obligate carnivores. They are unable to process carbohydrates. You may want to see what the percent of protein is in what you're feeding Rico and keep the amount below 30%.

It would be helpful to get a full blood panel. There are lots of tests that are not assayed. It looks like Rico's liver values have been elevated since August. Red cell counts (MCV, MCH, MCHC, platelets) are also lower than normal. One obvious question is why hasn't your vet addressed this?

Re: Protein. Cats are obligate carnivores that only process protein and fat well. The only time we might suggest lowering protein would be if Rico was in late stage kidney failure (which doesn't look like applies to Rico)

I'd ask the vet to run a Free T4. Total T4 was 2.3 back in 8/23 and hyperthyroidism can cause secondary liver issues and could also explain the wonky BG effects.

Hyperthyroid can also mask kidney disease results on blood work and kidney disease can affect the RBC.

He gave me Royal Canin diabetic and Happy Cat Hepatic to combine and feed Rico. But they're both dry and I don't really want to use them! :(

Thank you Chris! I'll tell him that!
Supposedly, he is the expert who should advise me and yet he just doesn't seem to take Rico's diabetes seriously... (NOTE: Greek people are mainly dog people - vets don't bother look after felines much...) :(
