04/06 KOBE AMBG 87; +5 70; OTJ Trial Day 7 (The Theft)

Caught Kobe on Camera stealing the wheel from his brother, Carmelo. Yesterday Kobe bit Carmelo in the neck. Right now they are spooning, so any hard feelings have been sorted out. For now.

We have a Ketone Meter by CentriVet that also reads BG. Got it because Kobe's Vet has the same one. We have never used it for BG and we're curious how different the reading would be.
Anyway, long story long, we tested the same bead of blood on our ReliOn (human) and the CentriVet (pet) at +5. And the ReliOn gave us a 70!!! Relieved to see he's going lower after eating. I was imagining that he was spending his whole day between 90 and 105.
I am not going to bother him every day, but I think we may need the occasional midcycle BG to see where we're really at. Just because his BG's have been on the higher side of normal.
I am hoping that the diet change is going to keep giving better and better numbers.

Per the OTJ Trial instructions, you should be testing him 3 hours after a blue AMBG or PMBG. I see you've missed a couple of those so far. They'll help your confidence that food is bring down his numbers. Is he getting multiple small meals per cycle?

Here is the link to yesterday's post.

He grazes throughout the day. I wasn't super worried about the blues after I tested after the first one and he was green. The highest blue happened when Kobe got some kibbles from an unnamed source BEFORE I was home to test BG. So that data was compromised. Sorry for not testing after all blues. We were satisfied that his pancreas was working and that BG was returning to green, but we set a bad example. :(

I have been concerned that his BG on Average is on the high end of the target range. We found out the other day that Kobe's "low carb kibble" isn't actually low carb. It's medium carb. I don't know how he's done as well as he has, Wendy. And it's also very high in phosphorus. :banghead: I feel like such a dummy.

So, we are slowly changing his kibbles.
And we are slowly incorporating Weruva Pates into rotation with his Fancy Feast. The Weruva is lower in phosphorus. I think that we are already seeing the benefit of these changes, but we'll see over the next few day and weeks.

Does Kobe have high phosphorus on his labs? It is good to have some lower P foods in the rotation, even if not high P, in case it gets there some day.

Any chance you had blood work done for Kobe before he became diabetic? At least for me, diabetes was the first time Neko had b/w, so I didn't know what her normal BG was. Though with her acromegaly, it was a moot point.

As far as I know he has not had high Phosphorus. I have his a recent lab from his hospital visit at the start of this year in his spreadsheet. I will see if I can get some labs from before the diagnosis in that sheet too. I think I remember hearing his phosphorus was on the high end of okay... but that it was something we should be keeping an eye on, but he wasn't eating enough and we were a wreck, so my recall is not to be relied on.

With the boys still eating some kibbles, we are thinking we should make sure all the other variables are as good for urinary tract health as possible. Kibbles and high Phosphorus food seems like a risky combo.

Ultimately, we want them to eat wet food. When we tried to switch before, the transition was too fast and they weren't eating enough calories. (This was right before joining forum). Kobe got ketones and Carmelo had some vomiting. Slow and steady is the plan this time.

I found some of his other labs (One from before and others from after) and entered them on his lab sheet so that we can compare them side by side. I labeled them as Before or After DX so that it would be easy to see which was which. Dean is going to try and find the ones from November when he was first diagnosed. I'll add those too. I am not seeing elevated phosphous anywhere. He was a mess when he was diagnosed in November and it wasn't super clear if he was going to have other comorbid diagnoses. I just remember that we were supposed to be mindful of his kidneys and pancreas going forward.

Kidney disease is a risk, but not something all get. For now, just keep an eye on his b/w numbers. His creatinine is pretty solid, which is good. Switching to a lower P food won't hurt and may be good to have in future. I track even my civvies (non diabetics) with the labs spreadsheet, I like seeing the trends.

That's good advice. Carmelo is a little jealous of the attention Kobe gets lately. I had to start giving him a treat whenever Kobe gets treats for his ear pokes or he would have stolen Kobe's!!! I'll tell him you said he gets his own Labs sheet. :p He'll be very excited.
