what a great vet hospital to do that. When Hendrick was hospitalized for DKA, my vet hospital did the same. In fact they called us on a Sunday to ask if we wanted to come visit and bring some of his favorite food as he had not been eating for them at all, even though they don't normally allow Sunday visits and we expected not to see him until the following day.

I hope Fistuks ketones continue to come down and he recovers well.

Yeah I guess we can say that… although it’s only because I call and I insist. It would t have happened otherwise
:bighug:

I checked him with a blood meter and the ketones were 2.1.

vet that spoke to me today was a bit more cheerful and less fear infusing. She wasn’t alarmed by me checking him with human meter. It was almost as if she wasn’t surprised when I said that per meters are giving much higher reads and she was
Interested in how much I got with my meter.

Vet said it’s really important he stays with the infusion so he’ll be here for another night and I’m allowed to visit him tomorrow afternoon again and then we’ll see.

his electrolytes are balanced but the give more potassium bc ketones are still high.

the give him Lantus 4units twice a day. She was informed of my request to keep the dose I give him and she keeps it. She said they have only once short term insulin. No Marley the give with BG above 250 but with Fistuk decided for above 500.

he was very very angry. She was aware that he’s very angry and said they don’t do much manipulation with him it’s just the IV that’s important.
He’s eating but not great. He’s so angry that even from me he took only a couple of tsp.

If the ketones are going lower tomorrow I’d be inclined to take him home. I don’t think that being so so angry is good.

she said she’d be happy to release him on 0.4 ketones. I think last time he was released with 1.1 mmol/L (don’t know if the conversion is the same as with BG) and I gave SQ at home. She was surprised to learn I can give SW at home and looked at it more positively and we’ll recheck tomorrow afternoon when I come.

I'm glad you were able to visit my cat when he was in the hospital with ketones, they also allowed me to visit every day. Although he wasn't angry, it seems like he liked being there in the cage with the vet, lots of encouragement.

I think another night in hospital is a wise idea even though he is angry and you are not happy about it. Better than having to take him back again if he doesn’t remain stable once you get him home.
While he is in hospital I would get prepared for when he comes home.
Make sure you have all the correct sub q fluids ready and how you are going to manage it on your own. And find out how much each day they recommend you give.
Ask the vet for some anti nausea medication, such as cerenia and or ondansetron…ondansetron is better if they will give you that. You may need a prescription and get that one from the pharmacy. If he isn’t eating much now I think it is very important you get antinausea meds to have at home. It is common for post DKA cats to have some nausea.
Also ask for an appetite stimulant.
And get a variety of food in the house for him. Low carb and some medium and high carb in case we need that.
And make sure you have plenty of testing strips for both the ketone and glucose meter.
Ask for a print out of all the path (lab) results done or get them to email them to you.
I know it is hard leaving there…I would be the same…probably worse…but this is something that really needs to be sorted out first before you bring him home.:bighug:

If by chance he has to stay another night, you might take in an old dirty t-shirt or socks to leave in his cage (if they’ll allow it). Sometimes cats are reassured by our scent, so make sure you've heavily worn/“scented” it. Just don’t plan on getting the article clothing back, as hospitals will often lose things.

I thought so too since I thought that 2.1 ketones is still high and that the reason he’s there

correct sub q fluids
This I will need to take from them. I bought a video course while Fistuk is there that I may have mentioned, tonight by a behavioural vet on how to administer medication for grumpy feisty cats ;) I learned a lot and bought some stuff he recommended to be prepared for when he comes back home.

I also have loads of strips and all the low medium high food. At the hospital I saw that they sell a liver pâté treat. I check and it was low carb so I got it for him and gave it to while I was with him he Loves it. I left it with the vet asking her to give it to him when she administered medication to try help him relax. I will ask for the nausea meds.
after being with him and seeing him yesterday I felt a bit better about leaving him there. I saw that the vet that was in charge for the weekend was a bit more present

take in an old dirty t-shirt o
I wanted to. When I got the ok to visit him I was our and about shopping for Fistuk. The hospital is on the other side of the lake so I didn’t have time to pass by the house. So I got him a scratch board that he likes and a shopping paper bag. It did the trick. It helped him to relax and the hospital agreed to keep it there for him. I am appreciative that they recognise that his anger is really not good and they’re willing to be a bit flexible to help him out.
Today I’ve packed my PJ for him : D

My Fistuk was traumatised by vets since he was a kitten so he’s not sympathetic to them unless they are to him. He’s got his clarity! Xx

I'm glad you feel a bit happier about everything and it sounds as if you are getting well organised for when he comes home.
