I’m going to pick up Fistuk in 4 hours.

vet said he’s eating ok and feeling well. Ketones were still 1 but he’s ready to go home.

they’ll give me SQ and he’ll need to have 60-80ml a day. I asked for a syringe so I can try and give him exactly what he needs and also faster.

I got 20G needles so hopefully that’ll be less painful than the 18G.

All the hospital BG measure and shots are in the SS. I asked to receive the remaining of last night and this morning.

ill probably need support in his recovery process and dosing.

thank you all so much for all your comforting presence, your precious advice and for making us feel like we matter and that we’re not alone ❤️

I am glad to hear Fistuk is ready to come home. Wonderful!
Even though he is eating, ask for some antinausea medications to have on hand incase he needs it. And an appetite stimulant.
So once you get him home this is what you will need to be doing:
  • Ensure he is getting 1 and a half times as many calories as he would normally eat. So apart from the two main meals, he will need lots of little snacks during the cycles.
  • Don’t miss any doses of insulin. If the BG is not high enough stall, dont feed, and test again in 20 minutes and post and ask for help.
  • Test at least daily or more often for ketones.
  • Sub Q fluids every day for the time being
  • Maintain the SS and put the ketones results into the SS.
  • Add a teaspoon of warm water to snacks if he will eat it.
  • post every day so we can see what is happening.

OK. Thanks, Bron.
I've been doing all that so far so it'll be to keep doing what I was doing.
I'll just need to give more regular SQ

So we're back to our meter....

+9.5 311

We're back in the pinks.... The last dose 4U is 8 cycles now. I do not want o be back into reds. Specially when his ketones are still 1.

I`ll give him the SQ in half an hour and can test him again at +11 to see how it influence.

Any suggestions?

I did it! we did ! I did it! we did it!

I gave him 60ml SQ almost without him noticing. YAY
I warmed the water, put a 20G needle in the freezer, used a syringe and found a treat he`s crazy about. And I used the towel for counter conditioning. It just went in and I had to make sure there^s no pool of water next to him that I^m fooling myself. But no! it`s in!!
YAY!!!! I can imagine how relieved and excited you are! :bighug::woot::bighug::woot:

So happy to hear he's home! :) Congrats on the fluids, that's a big milestone too. Other tips I'd seen are putting kitty in a top loading carrier, so you can access his back but he can't move much. I used to treat a foster kitty with hepatic lipidosis in the laundry basket with a towel over top.

Good luck with the new dose. Looking to see that ketones test.

Good luck! :)

How is he? Eating and drinking OK? In good spirits?
Thank you
Any suggestions on how to follow up with tests? And when it’s safe to go to sleep?

He’s eaten ok. I think more or less the usual amount I’ll give him more in an hour or so. He hasn’t had to drink. But he had the SQ and I added some water to the food.

he’s in good spirit. He’s under the blanket on the bed where he normally really loves being. He hasn’t been doing that much since he got sick so it’s nice to have him close by and he’s very happy with being petted.

he was a bit grumpy for the shot. It went it rather smoothly I was concerned it didn’t go it but I check the fur and there didn’t seem to be any wetness in it. It probably went in.

I would start with a +3. That seems to be a better indicator of an active cycle for him than +2. If he is flat or higher at +3, it might be okay to take a break from tests for the rest of the night. If he is lower, say below 300, you might want to get another test at +6. Try feeding small snacks at +1, +2 and +3.

Ok. Thank you Bhooma xx

+3 385
He's not showing great interest in food. He ate more or less the usual for supper and a few tsp at +2. He just wants to sleep.

I gave him 1/4 of Cerena which is the anti nausea the vet gave me. I find it hard to tell whether he has nausea. I do wonder if he^s just tired from all the ordeal at the hospital. But having higher BG again is quite stressful.

He peed earlier as we just arrived home and I didn't catch it for ketone test. He hasn't peed since. He hasn't gone to the bowl of water. I added quite a few spoons of water to his food. I really hope hells be ok

Depends on how easy it is to test Fistuk. Neko went like clock work, it was easy to be ready to grab a urine test when needed, and she wasn't shy about it at all.

Same. He’s not shy about it. I stick a spoon under his stream and he hardly looks at me so I have enough urine

Do you have another type of LC you can try? He doesn't need the carbs at this point, he needs calories.
I tried all the types of LC I have at home. I managed to feed him maybe half a tsp every two hours. The only thing he gets excited about is the lever treat I give him with injection. Its low carb but its really not food, just a tube of pate

At 4.1 kg, he should be getting about 8 mg of Cerenia per day. How large is the pill the vet gave you? Some vets underdose anti nausea drugs. Or dose it as the injectable but you need twice as much for oral med. Dosing is 2mg/kg of cat for pills.

Signs of nausea are described on the felinecrf website here.

It says 16mg on the wrap. So I gave him 2mg which is quarter of a tablet. So I guess I can give home twice a day

16 mg per tablet?

If you gave him 1/4 of a 16mg tablet then that's 4 mg.

From what @Wendy&Neko is suggesting (tagging her to confirm) is he should have 8mg, or 1/2 tablet (16mg tablet), I think that's in one go and I'm not sure how many times a day you can give.

Eta copying this to today's thread so you can respond there.
