Hanging out at the clinic now... Oberon is in surgery and the vet has checked in with me. He needs a bunch of teeth extracted, but once that's done he'll be feeling much better. They're removing both upper canines, all the remaining molars/premolars on one side (he already lost a couple on his own), and one premolar on the other side. Yow.

Also, they're totally on board with just skipping the morning dose rather than giving it late, unless his glucose spikes into the 400s or above. So fingers crossed we'll just start up again this evening with his regular dose, unless he doesn't want to eat when we get home, in which case he might get a partial dose.

BG dropped a bit during recovery; apparently they fed him a little (not sure what) and they'll check again in an hour, but hopefully after that he'll be ready to go.

Yep, we skipped the morning dose (and I just updated the post title to correct the times).

Just talked to the nurse... he went from 83 (corrected from 80) an hour ago to 73 now. They're going to give him a bit of A/D and see if that brings him up a bit. (Apparently when they tried to feed him earlier he wasn't quite awake enough to really go for it.) Looks like I'm here for a bit longer.
 
I am really curious what this dental does to his numbers. There may be some inflammation increase at first, but once that's gone... You have something like all meat baby food at home? In case his mouth is too sore to eat at first.

Good call on no insulin this morning. Neko dropped during a dental, almost earned a reduction. Thankfully I had BCS'ed.
 
Just a very quick update before I get on the road and try to beat the traffic and rain home... they punted and gave a bit of IV dextrose and we're on our way home! (He was too wobbly and freaked to eat, even with me there.) Bigger update in a couple of hours...
 
Home! Even with the dextrose he was only 131 at +9 (really +21 given the skip). We may end up skipping tonight as well. Poor boy is very hungry and trying to eat, but his mouth feels funny (stitches/numbness) so he's not actually getting very much. He's finally no longer acting ravenous, but I don't think he got a full meal yet. Right now we're trying his usual pate and soupy pate, and he's nibbling/licking a bit but not getting much. Any other ideas? We're not supposed to put anything hard in his mouth so I don't think a syringe/dropper would be a good idea.

Backtracking a bit in the thread... A/D is one of the prescription diets. I forget what it's usually used for but it's mushy and palatable so good for enticing cats to eat. As it turns out, they couldn't use it because it has fish in it, and someone in the office today has a severe fish allergy. So they tried baby food instead, but he was too freaked to even be interested.

Tim is out getting baby food now. I'm also thinking I might have a tuna sandwich for dinner and put some tuna juice on his food. He loves it. Maybe it would help him get past the discomfort.

Also, the final tooth count: 4 were missing already, and 7 were extracted. Nothing left on the left side except the incisors and lower canine. Right side is much better. Upper canine and the tiny premolar and molar gone, but that's it.

Oh, and another update: at my suggestion (thanks, Wendy!), my regular vet is ordering the urine protein/creatinine ratio test. They should still be able to run it on Monday's sample.
 
Tuna juice sounds like a good idea. Oberon may need to relearn to eat. Once time Furball had some teeth removed and had trouble eating at first. It just took a day to figure out how to eat afterwards. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

The face he keeps making is pretty much the same one he makes when he gets a mouthful of fur after ambushing poor Ariel. I suspect it's the stitches feeling weird. He just tried some baby food and did the same thing, but at least he had a little. Poor guy keeps on approaching the dishes from different directions, like "maybe it won't get me on this side!"
 
Wow, still not coming up... 117 at shot time (and he's still not eating all that much, though better than earlier), so we're going to skip again. Normally a shootable number, but I just don't know what he's up to right now. @Wendy&Neko , thoughts about contingency plans for the morning dose? Even if he finally bounces into pinks overnight I don't know if we should jump right back to his current dose (3 U).
 
Did you get any take home meds for pain or antibiotics? I think dosing should depend on how comfortable he is eating. BTW, that many teeth out it's not uncommon to have to skip. Rather that than fight low numbers with a kitty that can't eat.

Another consideration for dosing, it's not like Oberon's dose has been creeping up lately due to mouth infection. And he may see a short term bump up due to inflammation.

There is at least one anaesthesia induction drug that lowers BG's, and that can last in the system for a bit. That's not the one Neko got, but I have seen more than my fair share of kitties here dropping into PM BG time after getting home because of it.

Bottom line for dosing, you have to feel comfortable with what you shoot in the morning. I won't be up to see what his AMBG is. It's always easier to go back up than fight numbers in a kitty having a hard time eating.

Got it, thanks. I'm planning to sleep in but told Tim to wake me at shot time so we can discuss what to do.

He was sent home with 7 days of oral Clavamox and 2-3 days of oral Buprenorphine. I'm waiting to start the Clavamox until tomorrow because he's supposed to get it with food. He'll get the pain meds starting tonight. (He also got IV pain meds, antibiotics, and Cerenia before discharge.) They used sevoflurane and alflaxan; dunno if those anesthetics can lower BG.
 
If you have some, I'd also suggest a course of probiotics with that Clavamox - given a couple hours apart. The ABs can do a number on the tummy flora so you need to replenish it. (she says just having finished a week of them).

There's that spike, finally. I was starting to wonder. Looks like we'll probably be ok to go with the regular dose tomorrow.

Every time I make a move toward the kitchen he dashes over there like I'm going to feed him something different that he can actually eat. :( But he did just lap up a bunch of baby food, so that's good. Earlier he tried but made faces every time.
