Hi Jan! So happy to see you! :woot: Replying to you here:

Hi Katherine,
You may remember me praising Adequan in the past. It is a disease modifying agent, which means it is doing more than covering up pain. Tina was on metacam (detested NSAID) for over a year (along with Gabapentin). My goal was getting off the metacam. Adequan did that for us. She also continued 25mg Gabapentin, down from 50mg BID.

Many vets love Adequan for cats, and a lot seem to still think it’s Only for dogs, since that’s how it’s labeled. Thankfully, the third vet I asked happily said yes.
Go RUBY!

One year of Adequan about 130 dollars. That included twice a week loading dose, and we continued every other week .25ml which equals 25 units in your U100 insulin syringe!

It takes about a month for good help - don’t abruptly stop the gaba. Sending great wishes.
Ruby only got gaba for a few days and I got concerned about her constipation. I also didn't like how she was on it, hiding, a little stumbly, and not really into eating. I know I should probably be patient and let her get used to the effects but as soon as I stopped it she was back to her perkier self. I am hoping the Adequan will do many things for her, not only help her to walk and run with more ease but also she seems to have trouble sitting and eating at her feeder (I have this and it has a bar on top that makes it awkward for her to crouch). I am also hoping it will make it easier for her to assume the position when she needs to poop, as her weakness seems to be in her hips and hind legs.

Ruby's vet even mentioned Solensia that was recently approved by the USFDA to address osteoarthritic pain in cats that we could use if the Adequan does not work well. I have read many instances of Adequan working very well so I am hopeful.

Thank you for your always helpful advice, Jan. Hope your heart is healing. :bighug:

So I walked past the chair where I usually test and give Ruby her shot, and the syringe was still there, full of insulin. For the first time since Ruby's diagnosis, I FORGOT TO GIVE HER INSULIN! Gah! I was in such a fog this morning, spent most of it napping. I can't believe I did this!

She will recover! :bighug:

oh my gosh...lol, i almost completely forgot last week too, but was able to get it in him half hour late...i too had syring full just sitting there. Ruby will b fine im sure! nvmd, i see she is working the depot!!

PMPS = 215. The lack of insulin is finally showing itself.

It's all coming back to me what happened this morning. I gave Olive her Cerenia in a pill pocket this morning before everything else, and as I was testing Ruby, Olive threw up all over the carpet. I finished testing Ruby and went to clean up the mess before it really soaked in, and totally forgot about the insulin. Ai yai yai! :banghead: How do parents of young children manage not to lose their minds in the morning getting everyone out the door?

I'm sure Ruby will get back on track. At least you remembered how it happened ,
Don't you just love when they throw up on the carpets :arghh:
When Tyler does the smell of it makes me gag!
When I hear him start to throw up I grab him and throw him in the kitchen.
I hope Olive is feeling all better :bighug::cat:

We do. We just hide it, and get more gray hairs :joyful: 11 degrees F and snowstorm today (4+ inches on top of the 15 we already had), I had to put baby in carrier under my jacket, and get the toddler all suited up and go shovel so my husband could get in the driveway...least favorite parenting activity is dressing for snow/cold.

I forgot insulin a few times when the baby was little  it happens!

That is interesting about Adequan and Solensia. Jan mentioned a loading dose, which is what I had recalled. I would be very cautious about any newly approved drug in my cat. Only because there have been so many FDA approved drugs that have ended up being very harmful to cats and most vets won’t use them anymore. At least it’s not an NSAID.
Now, perhaps this drug has been used in Europe or elsewhere and has had a really good trial there in a lot of cats?? Do you have any idea? If so, that would make me feel better about trying it in my cat.

It’s good to know that you are a mere mortal like the rest of us, Katherine ;) (teasing you, of course, but it should let you know how highly I think of you.)

You raise a good point about being wary. One person over in the Main forum said she used Solensia without issues: https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB...-osteoarthritis-for-cats.257853/#post-2903722 . I don't think that Ruby's vet would use it, not at least until we give the Adequan some time, perhaps 6 months, so hopefully we will know more about it.

a mere mortal
I'm more fallible than you know! But I'm usually pretty on top of Ruby's care. Just not this morning!

@FrostD ^^^Indeed!
