Well, at least her numbers are still good. Up until around +6, she barely ate since yesterday! Last weekend I noticed her making frequent trips to the litterbox, leaving small spots of urine. On monday, I brought her to the vet. (it had been a year, so i figured we'd go) Tho, it is the WORST experience for both her AND me! She gets soooooooo stressed. She could not stop going (pooping) it was just coming out and she open mouth breathes, with tongue hanging out. So sad! and something I never want to put her through, unless absolutely necessary.

(her blood work was as the vet said, "surprisingly good". BG was 108 and fructosomine was 339! Liver and kidney values "excellent".

He said he could not get a urine test, (as her bladder was empty) but since the fur around her anus was soiled, matted, red, inflamed, etc., (she can't really reach around to clean it at - 17 lbs), and that coupled with her symptoms (frequent small output of urine) made him sure she was suffering from a bladder infection.

he prescribed 2 Baytril once a day. I said didn't feel comfortable putting her on an AB without a C & S. (and i heard some scary things about Baytril.) He said he didn't want to put her thru all that, staying there for hours, waiting for bladder to fill while it was clear to him that she got an infection prob from the feces around the backside. (i noticed she was having a prob back there a few weeks ago, kind of inflamed and dirty, so I tried to clean it and she had a fit and would run from me whenever she saw me. not good when i have testing and shooting to do.) so i let her be.

a different vet last year, put Sasha on Clavamox 62.5mg twice a day for 30 days (for UTI) I don't recall too many problems with that. i crushed the clav in tuna water and she licked it up. I asked if she could take that again. He said it would not be his first choice, it can cause upset stomach, doesn't work as well as Baytril, etc but it was up to me. He said if it were his cat, he'd give it Baytril. So I agreed to the Baytril.

That night i crushed 2 and put in tuna water. she wouldn't go near it. (the pills are big! and it turned the tuna water dark) the next day i got clavamox. But they were 125 mg tablets, so bigger than before too. I tried mixing them in her food, but as soon as she would take a few bites, she would stop and walk away. I was trying to encourage/force feed, soon she would not eat at all. WCF gave me some great suggestions, (some of which were yours!) about using treats. (it didn't occur to me to give her HC treats!)

On Thursday nite, i quartered the pill and put it in soft whiskers treats. Success! Friday morning, same thing, but I could see she was catching on. Friday early evening she ate a small snack and an hour later threw up. Then i tried to give her the pill in a treat, she wouldn't budge. I ended up pilling her by hand, that was the biggest mistake! It was a very bad scene. She was so angry and upset after, she ran off and hid and didn't eat any food overnight. i didn't see her again till this morning when i heard her sort of hacking a little. Eventually, I had to drag her in for her test/shot and again, she refused to eat. I don't know if she was scared or if stomach was upset, but I decided to skip the pills cuz its not worth her not eating and me not being able to give her her shots. Today I just worked on calming her down and regaining her trust.

Happy to say, she ate twice today so far and is snuggled up next to me and seems to have forgotten. but i don't know what to do, cuz she is still going to litter box whenever she wakes up (every 3-4 hours) and leaving small spots.

Is it safe to wait and see if this clears up on its own? I feel bad not giving her AB. But I feel worse giving it right now

Thanks Jojo!!

Poor Sasha!
I'm so sorry that she is still feeling poorly.. *sigh**
((Barb)).. Hope that nostrajojo has some great advice coming up for you..

Chin scritches to Sasha..

whoa, there is stuff going on here! this is usually such a quiet condo, never any problems, am a bit thrown off. lol.

well geez you would barely know anything is off by her numbers on SS.
sigh, rock meet hard place. yeah w/o a C&S this is only guess work as to if she needs a AB and if so which one, but i will say this right now~ one thing she needs either way, be this a real UTI or cystitis is pain meds! if it is cystitis, pain meds are the tx and if it is a real UTI need pain meds cause it is painful and i wonder about how many real UTI's turn into cystitis from the stress of pain?
sigh i can't dx this over internet, on one hand vet is right, if back end is soiled on a female cat chances are that bacteria from fecal matter has invaded u/t, but on other hand if her USG is high like most cat's is that is a hostile environment for bacteria to grow and she is a high stress cat even at home, the type prime for cystitis attacks.
you started clav, i would continue it since worst thing is to make resistant bacteria from only using it too short a period of time. have you tried temptation sandwiches? temptations with a little bit of pill pocket to 'glue' pill onto it. i have had so much success with those on getting pills into cats that never would take a pill no matter how hidden.
are you giving probiotics in food since she is on AB's to ward off g/i upset?
the AB's have to be continued even if it is not a UTI cause it sound like she has a skin condition happening back there from soiling. (and add in the pain meds, little bits of bupe, can shoot it SQ so no fuss for her)).

and here is the main main thing....got work to do. i know she is a recluse and doesn't get a lot of activity in bedroom or plays with other cats, but HAVE got to do something about her weight! i had no idea she was so 'fluffy' that she could not clean herself properly. that is a problem.
dr lisa has it all laid out in he web site on how to do safe weight loss in a cat. there are people on FDMB that have done great jobs with that, dian is well known for one, stephaine did a great job with president sherman on a weight loss plan, and i don't know if you ever go over to community but steph/cuddles adopted a very obese all white cat from shelter and has been working hard to get weight down, i just recently saw that cher was down to a pretty normal weight. you can PM any of them for tips and read dr lisa's site, or even do a consult with dr lisa would be great. the concept is no different than human weight loss~ less calories and if possible more exercise. it just has to be done very slowly with cats because of the danger of HL. but sahsa has to be able to clean herself properly, and she is going to have joint problems if that weight doesn't come down. felines being a predator species are ill designed to carry any extra weight at all, it just doesn't work on their body type causes all sorts of problems.
if you don't tell her, she will never even know she is on a diet.

did i cover everything?

Barb -

I completely understand how hard it is to get Sasha to the vet. Gabby is the same -- although she pukes rather than poops. I feel like a horrible bean when I have to take her in, especially if she's already not feeling well. I hope Jojo's suggestion for hide-a-pill works and Sasha starts feeling better.

yes thank you so much Jojo! appreciate it. I will work very hard on the weight issue. that is my goal for this year.

so i guess i'll try giving the clavamox again tonight? (she doesn't like pill pockets, but i can try a tiny piece of one and try to glue it. the HINT of something diff, she gets suspicious. (she smelled the fortiflora on her food and would not eat her food!)

you said:

(and add in the pain meds, little bits of bupe, can shoot it SQ so no fuss for her))

should I call vet (monday) and ask for pain meds? specifically bupe and i should shoot it?

lastly,
i was given a one week dose of clav. i started on tuesday evening, but that was when i was mixing it in with her food, so i'm not sure how much she got tuesday thru thursday morning. thursday night was the first night i was sure she got pill and friday too. should i count 7 days from the day i started, (which was tuesday?) or the day i am sure she got first real dose (thursday).

also, she didn't get any yet today. is it a prob that she missed AM dose? i will try giving her one tonight.

ugh

thanks!!

Barb.. here is the pill popper that I had to finally buy for Pepper..
Giving him his allergy pills twice a day became too much.. (he figured out all the tricks)..

pill popper

I don't know if she would allow you to do this. But, it really shoots the pill quickly and then I squirt a little tuna juice with an eye dropper..

Sienne, I had posted back to Jojo before seeing your post, so thanks for you post!

And you too Paula! thanks for the link. I really appreciate it. I will get one of those. I tried again tonight mixing a little wet food and temptations and she managed to eat most all of it BUT the pill. she WILL eat temptations, but not the pill pocket i tried (borrowed one from my neighbor's dog. maybe i need to try the cat one?) but the temptations don't work with out something to glue the pill to!)

so she missed both doses today. hope that's not too bad.
